Ok, now things start getting exciting. So I find myself a guide in Bukittinggi, and the next day we head off into the jungle. Now I'm having fun. The jungle was interesting and I was introduced to many of my favourite spices in their native habitat: Cinnamon, Cardamom and Lemon Grass. But what was truly amazing is walking through the rice paddies, with the locals working the fields, by hand and by buffalo. I knew about this before, but being there is everything, seeing people living this life style, it was really something else. I felt like my heart has really been opened to how these people live. The highlight was the view from Lawang Top. Perched high above Lake Maninjau, surrounded by mountains I suddenly felt very at home in the world, connected and slightly ... read more

I was glad to get out of the sweaty industrial town of Dumai, although the overnight bus trip wasn't exactly bliss. I arrived in Bukittinggi early in the morning, and with the help of a local girl found my way to my hostel. Walking round Bukittingi was an interesting experience. I really came to appreciate that I was in a foreign land. Bukittinggi is rather unique; it is 930m above sea level meaning that it is rather cool. Mountains rise up around it and clouds float by, just out of reach. I managed to be befriended by a local who guided me to a nearby village on the other side of the canyon. This place is beautiful. Rice paddies either side of the road, stretching off into the mountains. I was in awe. Sitting having dinner ... read more

I have just spent 2 days in Dumai staying at with Mr Muchsin, the teacher of a local English school and helping his students with their english. I have been feeling quite cut off, because I haven't seen another foriegner for about 3 days now. It has been an interesting experience getting to meet the local people. I have been asked a number of times what I think of the Bali bombing. My opinion is that it's probably safer now than it was before, because security has probably been clamped down. Also I think the main weapon of terrorism is fear. If I run away afraid the terrorists have won. I would prefer to stay and understand the culture more. It is important to know that all the Indonesians that I have spoken to about it ... read more

Asia » Indonesia » Sumatra » Lake Toba August 18th 2005

Our sightseeing trip from Bukit Lawang to Lake Toba was undertaken in a minibus, which by itself was not really uncomfortable but we felt the bad road conditions (potholes etc.) much more strongly. The first part of the trip led us back to Medan, crossing wide plantations of oil palms whose fruits were just being picked and transported to oil mills, and huge plantations of gum trees. The crossing of Medan did not consume too much time, there were relatively few congestions. Our next stop on the way to Lake Toba was Brastagi, a hill resort town established by the Dutch in the early 20th century as a retreat from the heat and humidity of the lowlands. Although the town does not have many specific points of interest, its position, surrounded by active volcanoes, is memorable ... read more

Every once in a while I like to have a quick look around the countryside without numbing my behind on the hard seat of a crowded rickety bus or elbowing my way through often hopeless crowds at railway stations. But best of all I enjoy flying short domestic legs on exotic airlines, the stranger their logos or hopelessly odd their aircraft the better. Indonesia is serviced by a great number of domestic airlines, most of them making use of the ubiquitous Boeing 737-200, presumably inherited from larger airlines such as Garuda or Malaysian that got sick of them or bankrupted. My favourite trick is collecting time tables and trying to puzzle together an itinerary that will take me in a sweeping circle back to my starting point within the same day. It is no easy task, ... read more

We were back in Indonesia (almost) and the second attempt did not start very well. The flight from Kuala Lumpur to Medan took only one hour but the haze caused by severe fires on Sumatra had reduced visibility considerably, so that when approaching Medan the pilot informed us that most probably he would not be able to land and that the plane might be forced to return to Kuala Lumpur. After circling above Medan airport for some time, the pilot decided to give it a try and finally managed to land, though the landing was a bit rough. Anyway, welcome back to Indonesia! Border formalities came next and we really got our visa on arrival in exchange for hard cash ($25 per person). Well, that was a positive surprise for once. Sumatra is Indonesia’s westernmost island ... read more

Sumatra is a travel destination that few people are knowledgeable about, and even fewer people visit. It is, surprisingly, the sixth largest island in the world and well and truly off the beaten track. The previous journal left off in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta, from where I organised a bus ticket to Bukittinggi in West Sumatra. Unsurprisingly the bus was jam packed and my travelling companion, although not a tall man, spread his legs luxuriously for the thirty hour journey so that my legs were almost fused together by the end of the trip. This travel caper can be quite a gruelling experience in Indonesia. We arrived at Merak in north west Java, dear reader, and boarded the ferry for the short trip to Bakauheni in southern Sumatra. I met a group of gracious young ... read more
