In both Banjur and Pangadaren we had to use Becaks to get from the train station to the bus station and from the bus station to the hotel. Becaks are peddle powered rickshaws where the driver sits behind. They are well known for driving a hard bargain and we did our best not to be ripped off to a ludicrous level. It was a long day of travelling and we were all relieved to arrive at hotel Nyiur Beach. We are the only westerners here and it's at the cheaper end of accommodation. The room is cold which is lovely. The kids immediately went in the pool and were revived.... read more

The place we were actually heading for was called Pangandaran, however Cas called it by the above name and it has stuck. We hit the breakfast buffet at 6.00am and filled our boots, plus we took a bag of stuff for the train such as banana bread, toast and muffins. My first fluff up of the trip in terms of travel. I'd booked us on a train, however that particular train left yesterday; I'd got my dates muddled up. Fortunately there was a cheap option and we were off at 7.20 on our 4 1/2 hour train ride. The conductor was accompanied by two armed guards. Makes you wonder... The skies were full of big white clouds as we headed east and south towards the coast. Half of the population is engaged in agriculture and we ... read more

After our meal we stopped at a cash machine which was inside an air conditioned booth. My Revolut card was declined and so Cas used her debit card. Whilst she was in the booth doing the transaction, there was the most unexpected sight. A herd of what looked like wild reindeer came down the middle of the street. Ed, Hat and I were gobsmacked. Rudolf took a sine to a black plastic bag of rubbish and shook it this way and that to try and get inside. Finally he was shooed away by a local shop keeper and the entire herd slipped through a small gap in a brick wall. I tried to take s pic but it was just too dark. It was at this point that Cas reappeared from the ATM booth and we ... read more

My plane landed safely in Cijulang on a tiny runway carved out of the jungle. I had nothing planned except to survive the flight and figured I would be able to find my way to Pangandaran from there (about an hour drive away). So I asked the guys who worked there about a cab or a local bus and they just said no and laughed. Lucky for me though, they let me ride along in the van that belonged to the airline that was taking packages and the pilots on to Pangandaran for a small fee. Score! The guy driving the van dropped me off at this awesome beach bar - I had a beer and chatted with the owner who also owned a guest house (hostel). I took a room there and dropped off my ... read more

Shortly after the bus arrived in Pangandaran I felt myself quite horrible. I became very sick, and I felt myself horrible, especially in the late evening, night and morning of the 12thday. Pangandaran is a great place to learn surfing, but I was so sick, I could not attend this excursion, so in the end of the trip, I did not manage to surf. It also became even more horrible due a fight with a roommate, leaving me no other change to end the relation as friends and find another room for myself. In Pangandaran we arrived in our hotel Pantai Uni, were I had room 2014. The hotel had a great sight on the beach, so it was not more than 200 meter to the beach. Be careful, because a road had to been crossed ... read more

Today, we should leave Jakarta, and after two travelling days, we should visit Pangandaran. The last travel day, is not a long day, where we will go by the train through the country side of Java. Then, a shirt bus drive would bring us to Pangandaran, which I will continue in the next blogpost. The day started with a little small trouble. The breakfast at 6 was good, and we should leave with the bus at 7. At least, that was the plan. In our hotel, we had 3 groups of our travel organisation, and somehow they changed the busses, including the bus drivers. And, our travel leader Bob had missed his alarm, so he was a little bit too late. Some members of the group did not saw him by the breakfast, and it was ... read more

A opravdu. Usedám do busu a usínám.

"Pangandaran" qu'il me lance. Peu de temps ... read more

The longest journey by road yet, continuing my battle with Indonesia's local inter-city buses. This time was a three-leg journey, first from Wonosobo to Purwokerto (3h), then to Banjar (3h) and finally to my destination Pangandaran (2h). Including waiting time during the transfers, total journey time was almost 9.5h! Glad to have survived it, and I'm sure it'll be good training for more to come in future... Anyway, arrived at Pangandaran, supposedly one of Java's better beach resorts. This was low season so there weren't many tourists at all, apparently things heat up during New Year and after Ramadan, when locals flock here. Stayed at Bamboo House, nice place with attached bath and wifi, IDR80k.... read more
