On Timor I made my way up that island’s highest mountain, Gunung Mutis, and now I’ve also stood on top of Flores’ highest mountain, Gunung Ranaka. Its not really as great a feat as it may sound - there’s a paved road all the way to the top! Still it was a hard slog and took about five hours, including numerous birding stops as well as for second breakfast and elevenses. The entrance road isn't far from Ruteng, maybe eight kilometres or so, about four bends past where the road has obviously fairly recently been completely taken out by a landslide and re-cut. Its rather inconspicuous if you're trying to find it, just a modest arch labelled "Taman Wisata Alam Ruteng" set back from the main road. The situation seemed the same as at Danau Ranamese ... read more

A long time ago when the world was young, there was an island. On the island there were many wonderful animals: a monstrously large lizard, a giant rat, a giant tortoise, and a pigmy elephant. And there was also a little man who walked among the animals and every so often stabbed them with his little spear and ate their flesh. Still, he was only a little man and his stomach wasn't very big so it all worked out all right. But then there arrived on the island a bigger man and he had a big appetite, and he ate all the little elephants and all the big tortoises and he drove the little man into the hills where he hid. That sounds like a Just So story, but the island was Flores and the little ... read more

Something funny happened on the way to Flores - I discovered that the flight to Ruteng actually goes to Labuanbajo then they take you by bus to Ruteng. I wasn’t particularly impressed by this. The whole point of flying straight to Ruteng was to avoid the four hour bus trip there in the first place. You have to go with the flow when in Indonesia but sometimes they really do make it difficult. The first grueling forty minutes of the bus trip were through what appeared to be one continuous roadwork. And because it was largely being accomplished through the use of wheelbarrow and shovel, I think it’s a fair bet to say there won’t be a whole lot of progress made over the next hundred-odd years. Once past that the road was actually very good ... read more

The Pelni ship is an amazing mode of transport. German-made and the biggest ship I have ever been on in my life (I've never been on a cruise, but if some of you have, you can then imagine the size of this monstrosity), these beasts haul thousands of passengers every day of the year from island to island, from Sumatra and Java, Kalimantan and all the way east to Maluku and Papua, and many smaller islands in between. There are often six or seven floors for passengers, plus lots and lots of cargo. Passengers can opt for 1st, 2nd and sometimes 3rd class, or, as most people's budget allows, economy. Economy, to put it bluntly, sucks, but its all I can afford, so it's what I take. There are actual spaces to sleep in economy, raised ... read more

Ok, let's see, I left off while I was exploring Flores, a truly spectacular, volcanic island in Indonesia. So much has happened since then, I don't even know where to begin. Oh, for those of you who are new to my email blast, first off, welcome, second of all, to catch up and keep abreast of my travels (often, quite delayed, however, and I do apologize for that), please read and sign up to receive my blog: http://www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/travlinfool From Moni, where I had had the break-in in my room, I traveled to the east of Flores, stopping in Maumere one night along the way. After a quick overnight in Larantuka, on the extreme eastern end of the island, sharing the room cost with a couple I had met on the local bus journey, I zipped out ... read more

After the 4 day/4 night boat trip from Lombok to Flores, I took a couple days to relax in Labuanbajo, the town on the western end of Flores and do a couple of dives a few hours from shore. The diving, officially in Komodo National Park, is world class, stunning, colorful, with lots of macro (that's the tiny stuff) and big palegics. Dived with sharks, turtles, massive Napolene Wrasse (maybe 2 meters in length -- and they're just fishies) and enjoyed the most amazing, diverse soft and hard coral I have ever seen. At $30 a pop, the diving was not too expensive, but because I am on a strict budget (well, I do deviate at times....), I could only afford two dives and then had to move eastward. Beautiful Flores awaited. Nearly the entire length ... read more

Day 253: Monday 9th March - A party in Labuanbajo harbour Nine of us climb on board to join the five guests and eight crew already on the Perama boat. We are later joined by others who have sailed west to east and who have got off at Labuanbajo for a farewell/arrival party. This is a bigger group than I expected, but it seems a good group and I get acquainted with a number of the group. Joining me are two girls from New York, Liz and Ivy; a French Canadian couple, Alex and Sandrine; a couple from Dorset, Mike and Trudi; an Australian girl, Philippa and an Indonesian guy. We join up with an Australian couple, a Swedish couple and a French guy who have already been on the boat for 3 days sailing to ... read more

Day 251: Saturday 7th March - The start of an adventure to Flores Today is the start of an adventure. I don’t quite know what will be involved, all I do know is that I need to be in Labuanbajo, in western Flores at 6pm in two days from now. I have a flight to Maumere in eastern Flores at lunchtime today, but with Merpati’s track record anything could happen. Then quite how I get from Maumere to Labuanbajo is anybody’s guess but I do know that I want to see Kelimutu, a trio of different coloured volcanic crater lakes which is the main purpose of my visit to Flores. Well that and linking up with seeing Komodo dragons in Komodo National Park on the islands immediately to the west of Flores. Let the fun begin! ... read more
