The Matrimandir, Auroville.
The Matrimandir, Auroville.
I went inside this place and do not have words to describe it. It is essentially a meditation hall and I think there would be few people who wouldn't be moved by it.
I LOVE PONDI! Yes, I probably could live here for quite a while. The French quarter has the most beautiful coloured buildings with wide tree lined streets and many choices of food too. It gets really hot at times though, which could be a problem. But I shan't ramble on here, just know that I love it and will be back there in the not too distant future, especially as I feel that I have made some lovely friends. Thank you for everything Hari, Petra and Marion. See you all in 2010. [View Full Entry]

The sleeper bus to On the sleeper bus to Pondi, one of the worse trips I have ever had. I thought I was going to be thrown from my bunk at any minute.

Bangalore Botanical Gardens when Dev heard he had his visa....

By the time we arrived at the train station for our four hour ride to Delhi, the combination of dehydration from my upset stomach and the fierce sun (it was 95 in the shade) had gotten to me. Boarding the train I climbed straight into one of the upstairs bunks and just lay under a fan for the entire trip and tried to sleep. Bob tells me that I didn't miss much on the ride in, but I should have ample chances to see it as I have one more train into Delhi and two out coming up over the [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, Oct 20th Finally I got sit down and write… We’re in the airport and waiting for our plane to Goa. The past couple days in Mumbai were crazy. We left the ashram on Saturday early morning and got on the train to Mumbai. We’d booked just regular seats, nothing fancy, but lots of fun. Its hard to describe, but I’ll try: Picture tons of people trying to get into one carriage….We got in and even found our seats… Definitely nothing for bigger people. There are families, huge groups of people and everyone’s playing music and talks and is just st [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, Oct 20th Later on in Anjuna, Goa So, now we arrived in Goa. Our plane was about an hour late, but if you learn one thing here, it’s patience… Besides patience, India teaches you thankfulness. I am just so lucky, that I was born where I was born and that I was able to live outstandingly well, go to school, get a university degree and so on. But let me get on with Goa: my first impression: very touristy, reminded me kinda of the Canary Islands. We met two girls at the airport and shared a taxi with them, which [View Full Entry]

This blog is late because I had a problem with my camera and couldn’t get the photos off it until now. There should be another one or two soon. It relates to the days 29/09/2009 - 4/10/2009. As you might notice, most of it was written about three weeks ago. As well as all the jungles and temples, waterfalls and mountains, beaches and rivers, elephants, lions and tigers, that you see on the tourist brochures, the typical image of India should be men peeing against walls. This probably explains why the cities smell like the area in a 20 metre radius [View Full Entry]

Dad has left now. For the few days after Kathmandu, the two of us lounged around our luxurious hotel room at the Grand Goodwin in Ram Nagar. For one of the days, my Dad went to Agra to see the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, while I ordered room service and watched “Mortal Kombat” and “Get Me Out of Here, I’m a Celebrity!” reruns on television. We had a great time, and more than anything else, I enjoyed just having my father there to talk with. It seemed almost egregious that we set our final weekend in Mumbai, an Indian city [View Full Entry]

I arrived in Delhi on October 13th, at about 4 in the morning, I wasn't able to sleep so I hit streets and took some pictures. The first few days in Delhi we're so overwhelming, all the horns, people, animals, and smells left me needing to get the hell out of Delhi. So after 3 days in Delhi, I took a flight to Srinagar, in Jammu and Kashmir, where it was much calmer. In Srinagar I was staying on a houseboat on a lake, very beautiful and very relaxing, Once I had some time to reflect on what was happening I [View Full Entry]

Well, it’s not quite the gauntlet. More like a self-inflicted time crunch that will span the next month. That’s how long I have left in India. A month. It seems odd to say. I’m saving my travel funds until the program ends, and my lengthy end-of-the-term papers are growling at me. Plus, I have a whole language to re-learn, thanks to the long break in Hindi class and my sloth in studying on my own. It’s easy to not know Hindi in Delhi. So I have a month in Delhi, for better or worse. A month to savor all the tantalizing [View Full Entry]

WWF has its own building in Delhi which includes the TRAFFIC office and a lovely roof top view over the streets and trees
The destination for my latest venture is India, primarily Delhi, the city where anything and everything can happen in an instant. I have once again tied up the laces on my travelling boots and set off for unknown territory leaving behind the comforts of English living, clean water and safe food. The motivation behind this latest expedition is the opportunity to volunteer for three month with WWF in their wildlife TRAFFIC department. I did not know much about the trafficking of animals before I left but WWF seems to me an idol in the conservation world and so I was happy [View Full Entry]

Another tour, another overnight train ride, this time to Jaisalmer in Rajathstan. If you are going to take a seventeen hour train ride in India in 3rd class, I highly recommend that you do it on Diwali. It is like travelling on Christmas Day; pretty much everybody is already at home and so the roads and trains are empty except for a few tourists (ans some Indian guy who started rubbing Mark's feet in the night, thinking it was one of the girls). The other thing that I would suggest is leaving at around 5pm, which gives you an hour of [View Full Entry]
