Passing boats were interesting, day and night
Fort Kochi - Monday 2 & Tuesday 3 November An on-time Jet Konnect flight took us south in around 1½ hours to Kochi (formerly Cochin), where a pre-arranged taxi from the Fort House Hotel awaited us. It took almost as long to travel by road from the airport to Fort Kochi as it did to fly down from Mumbai. The road, through Ernakulum and across bridges connecting the outlying islands was busy and the giant advertising hoardings in an unfamiliar script made it clear that we were now in the south of the country. Our driver, like most of the peop [View Full Entry]

Five days in Hampi Asia » India » Karnataka » Hampi
Friday, Oct 30th, Hampi - Karnataka This morning was the first time in forever, that we took a yoga class. It was different, but not bad. Weird introduction… Whatever. We arrived in Hampi yesterday morning after a 14 hour bus ride. It was fun, but also totally exhausting. It was a sleeper bus, so picture this like a bus with a ton of bunk beds inside. Ok, if you ever decided you wanna take a bus in India, make sure, you didn’t have recent abdorminal surgery, you are pregnant, suffering from hernia, have any ulcers (sorry, inside joke ) No, seriously, [View Full Entry]

Tuesday, Nov 3rd What a night! Contrary to my hopes, the roads got even worse. I don’t think I ever saw potholes that size! At least I managed to sleep somewhat. This morning it didn’t really get any better. First I couldn’t find my contacts, so I was pretty blind to start with, second I was pretty disorientated and had o idea where I was going. Then I happened to run only into people, that didn’t speak English, including my Rickshaw driver. He must’ve sensed my confusion, took his chance and drove me circles around the city without really going where [View Full Entry]

Hi Everyone, Delhi seems to me to epitomize all that is wonderful and horrible about India. I ended my trip here, but most tourists start here because Delhi is a major international destination. I heard more than one horror story from fellow tourists that I met in Agra and Varanasi about the tourist scams that go on. One couple told me that instead of taking them to their hotel their taxi driver dropped them off at a 'tourist information office' which was a front for a travel agent selling private tours of Agra, Jaipur and Delhi. They tried to tell leave, [View Full Entry]

Pushkar, a small city in western Rajasthan was created when Lord Brahma (one of the Hindu gods, the creator actually) dropped a lotus flower from his hand to the earth and at the spots where three of the petals landed, water appeared in the otherwise dry desert area to from three blue lakes (according to the Hindu history). On the banks of the largest of these lakes Brahma gathered 900000 celestial beings- this is why Pushkar and its lakes are one of Indias most sacred places, during a specific full moon phase of october/november the water is believed to cleanse the [View Full Entry]

Paying my respects to one of India's great leaders on his birthday
This quote comes from Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known around the world as Mahatma Gandhi or in India as Bapu. Gandhi was the political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian Independence movement, and since his birthday (a national holiday) falls on the 2nd October - shortly after my arrival here in India - I thought it only right to pay my respects. The following day I headed out with Melissa, a fellow volunteer, and together we travelled by auto rickshaw to Old Delhi and to the final resting place of Gandhi. Raj Ghat was our destination, the site is [View Full Entry]

Mumbai (formerly Bombay) - Saturday 31 October & Sunday 1 November If you saw “Slumdog Millionaire” and watched the recent terrorist drama unfold here in Mumbai, you’ll have already seen where we spent this Sunday. As we sipped our 500 Rupee (GBP6.50) beers at the luxurious Taj Mahal Hotel on Colaba’s waterfront, it wasn’t lost on Lajpal that we’d just experienced two extremes of life here in Mumbai - the Dharavi slums this morning and five-star opulence this evening. We’d actually arrived in Mumbai on Saturday morning. Lajpal had taken a [View Full Entry]

Well that's adios to Delhi, New Delhi, Old Delhi, or whatever the fuck they call it these days. More on that later. Most of my time in Delhi was spent in the hostel, just chilling and getting my bearings about me, or at least trying to. Just lay about relaxing and having a few Kingfisher (surprise surprise!). I said in my first blog that there would probably be a few hiccups along the way, and indeed there was, literally, last Sunday night after we stuck 2 past the mancs. Waa ha! A good night was had that night by the whole [View Full Entry]

Motorpsycho nightmare Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar
Walking in the labyrinth of narrow streets in the quaint old town of Pushkar could in theory be a fascinating experience, given the nice old buildings, temples, shops, the friendly and colorfully dressed local people. However there are a few things in the streets that make walking there a bit frustrating and even hazardous. For a start there are the persistent touts, really annoying shopkeepers, con-artists, scammers, fake gurus, pilgrims, armless beggars, legless beggars, beggar women with scruffy kids and skeletal babies, beggars with every kind of exotic skin disease, little kids who want t [View Full Entry]
