A raft floats down past Ram Jhula
I left Shimla by bus, and endured a cramped but beautiful 11-hour bus ride through the hills and down to the relatively low-lying state of Uttaranchal. I was heading for Rishikesh, a small town on the holy Ganga river. Rishikesh is a major pilgrimage site for Hindus, being near the source of the Ganga and therefore home to several major temples. It is also known in the west as the place where the Beatles came when they went all weird and spiritual, and today attracts western tourists in their droves, who come to meditate, practice yoga or simply soak up the [View Full Entry]

Day14 - Jaipur After our late start, we were heading into the market area of Jaipur by tuk-tuk. We got out and headed towards the Palace of the Winds. We passed marketstalls and small shops, all of which promised much and we vowed to return later for shopping. The Palace of the Winds is pink, and has nearly 100 windows in it. We also saw where the City Palace gates were, and after consulting the guidebook thought this might be a good place to visit after the Amber Fort. After a few photos, we headed back to where the tuk-tuk's had [View Full Entry]

Day 15 - 16 Back to delhi We arrived back in Delhi with a mixture of happiness that we were going home and a little sadness that our adventure had come to an end. During the day we had gone to Connaught Square for the last bit of shopping, and managed to finish our shopping and ensure that we had presents for everyone. We had one last meal with everyone at tea time and met at the only bar that had a drinks licence. It was the one we had visited right at the start of the holiday and was full [View Full Entry]

Day 12 - Agra We woke up on our sleeper train to find that everyone in our compartment had a resonable nights sleep espicially Nicky who had taken a sleeping tablet and said that she had the best nights sleep of the holiday so far. We hadn't been up long before we were treated to the sound of the chai waller coming along the carridge. This is a man with a large tea urn which contains the hot spicy tea who goes along the train shouting "chai chai chai chai" as he goes. Not wanting to miss out on a nice [View Full Entry]

Our Guide explains all

Well, we've left sadhana forest which was weird, went to Bangalore where we spent two nights, and now we are in Mysore. Bangalore was crazy and very busy, but luckily we were on the out skirts which mean we had a nice guest house for not that much money, the only tricky thing was getting around the place. Rickshaws and everywhere but they all want to rip you off. At our hostel we actually had a balcony (albeit a tiny one, but a balcony none the less). To get to Bangalore from Pondicherry, we had to travel on a Sleeper bus, [View Full Entry]

Day 13 -Bharatpur Asia » India » Rajasthan » Bharatpur
Day 13 - Bharatpur - Jaipur An early morning start saw us catch cycle rickshaws to the Bharatpur Bird Sancturary which actually was a little further from the hotel than we thought. The rickshaw riders looked like they were struggling a little but we guessed they must be used to it, although a Chris Hoy in the making they are not. The bird park was good and we spotted loads of different types of birds including Serpent Eagles, Owls, Cattle eagrets, Kingfishers, wagtails, drongos and much more. We were also told about a part of the monestary where a monk lived [View Full Entry]

Procession in Pushkar Asia » India » Rajasthan » Pushkar
I had expected to see lots of street processions in Pushkar during the festival, but it was a while before I saw the first one. I was alone in the hotel room because Tracey had gone off early in the morning to photograph camels, old men in big turbans, scowling beggars, and suchlike. My laziness was rewarded by the appearance of this procession right outside the hotel, which overlooks the main bazaar street. First, before anything was visible, came the noise. A frightful ear-splitting but vaguely musical din, even louder than the normal bazaar din, which steadily and unbelievably increased i [View Full Entry]

I may be taking a short hiatus from posting blogs. It's not that I don't want to post, but I am so unbelievably busy at work that it may be difficult to have time to write the blogs. I am working on a training manual that consists of 13 one hour trainings. I have two weeks to finish writing and researching the trainings then I'm doing a test implementation over two days and reviewing and making changes. If you do the math, that means all of my time is taken up in the next few weeks until I leave. I will [View Full Entry]

Beachy Varkala Asia

The beach was calling
After our great backwater experince, we decided to travel south from Fort Cochin by boat so booked a tourist boat from Alleppey (2 hours from Fort Cochin) to Kollam. We took a death-wish taxi to Alleppey and boarded our boat. It was very empty, just 10 of us in total, so comfortable. It was very slow going (10km/hr) but the scenery was amazing so we didn't mind. We got to Kollam, a typical (horrible) big Indian town, we hated it and got a taxi straight to Varkala. We'd been recommended this place by Steve and Sarah, who we'd met in Goa. [View Full Entry]
