Apologies in advance, first of all, for any typos in this entry and previous- this machine appears to be playing up!! This morning I walked to the Bhuttia Busty (no smirking at the back there!) Gompa (Monastary). It took about twenty minutes from the centre of town, down a steep little lane that switched backwards and forwards. According to the book, in high season, when the weather is clear, you can get great views from the Gompa to Khangchendzonga. This morning it was very misty, and I wasn't always able to see to the end of the stretch of path that I was walking down. The Gompa was quite small, and I was shown round by one of the monks there. According to my LP book, they've got a copy of the Tibetan Book of the ... read more

Kolkata is submerged. Everywhere you look, huge swathes of pavement lie hidden under water that's neither brown nor green, turning parts of town into a no-go area for those of us too wimpish to stride through the stagnant mini pavement ponds. Journey from London reasonably uneventful. Surpisingly security light- I wasn't searched or anything, tho was aware of the occasional random check going on around me. We landed at about 5.15am this morning, and after a few hairy moments waiting for my little rucksack to make its debut performance on the carousel (actually, it was more than a few moments!) I left the airport to find it pissing down. Managed to locate the cab driver that the hotel had sent, and here I am. This morning, after a couple of hours kip, went and found the ... read more

Left Kilimpong West Bengal in the afternoon to the train station. Unluckly there was a land slide on the main road so we had to take the long way round. 6 hours later I arrived at the train station in the evening and went to buy a ticket for the overnight train to Kolkata. Unluckly the only seats left were the lowest class seats on the solid wooden benches crambed in with the locals. I took one before from Amritsar to Delhi 12 hours over night and didn't want to do another. But I had no where else to go so I reluctantly bought a ticket. Luckely I got a seat on the train an hour before it was to leave and was sandwiched against one guy with BO who was the size of two grown ... read more

Forgot it was Indepence Day here in India. Arrived in Kalimpong today 15th August, West Bengal after a few places in Sikkim, was searching for a hotel, but all fully booked. After 1 hour and a dozen hotels I settled for a nice double with onsuite for 2 pound fifty. Anyway spent a night in Darjeeling again cause I was told it was the only place I could get a permit for Sikkim. Atrrived at the Foreign District Registration Office for a permit on Friday at 4.02pm. Read a notice on the door that said open Mon - Fri 9am to 4pm. Damn, I'm gonna have to wait two days I thought, but then the a guy that was still in the office said, oh you can get one at the border. Oh, I've come 50 ... read more

Recovered slightly from the the flu yet l still felt a bit weak and I had to go and get my visa for Burma at the embassy just outside of Kathmandu. Turned up at the Burmese Embassy. 'Closed'. I asked someone and they said that it has moved. I presumed maybe to a different town, but luckely for me only down the road. Got there, filled out all the forms, but they needed 4 photos so off I went into town to get some instant ones. 1 hour later I came back. Everything went well and I was told to come back at three, so I did after another pleasant stroll in town. The trouble was that they wanted dollars and I presumed I could pay with Nepalese Rupees. I spent all my dollars on the ... read more

Well we have now been in the wonderful India for 3 days, and thus far we are loving it! We are in Kolkata (Calcutta) staying at the finest hotel I have ever seen, rediculous actually. (dont worry Brady we are just it is very reasonable!). Anyways, the people are incredible. In comparison to China there seem to be many more people everywhere, which is amazing in itself since we thought China was a busy place! The food is so good that we can feel ourselves expanding but cant help but savour every bite. Nothing but good things to say so far. That is all for now... we are off to enjoy more scents and sweets (Kolkata is the sweet capital of the world, no wonder we are in heaven!). ... read more

So here we are in the City of Joy, Kolkata. It's a crazy place and from what others have said, not many people enjoy it. We came expecting the worst, and whilst far from falling in love with the city, we haven't completely hated it. In honour of our anniversary we acted nice and went for a decadent dinner at Peter Cat - a pretty funky little place where the waiters wear turbans and cummerbunds. Corb had the local specialty - Chelo Kebabs - which was goat (we think) sausage, butter rice, and chicken and vegie kebabs... delicious! I had the Afghani Chicken - succulent and rich and everything we'd hoped. We also splashed out for drinks... ice cold beer and a not too shabby barcadi and pineapple.. mmmmmm. The food in Kolkata has generally been ... read more

Leaving Nepal I had one of the more surreal experiences of the trip : walking through the no-man's land of pastures that stretches as far as the eye can see, I spoke Spanish to a Nepali guy...... weird!! The Indian immigration were stereotypically frosty and and a bit slow. The bus ride from the border was stereotypically hot, cramped, and a little more than we'd expected. Nevertheless, we found ourselves a jeep and hauled our asses up the hill to Darjeeling. Situated in the West Bengal Hills, Darjeeling is a quaint little place that was once a summer retreat of the British. These days it is full of rich Indian Tourists all dressed up to the nines, despite the ridiculousness of elaborate saris in the rain. We got lost our first night, and most places were ... read more

What an adventure to reach this metropole! Yesterdayevening we went to the place where the AC Volvo would pick us up. A crew of men had been waiting fo us, cause the bus was broken. "Problem coming"... we told the crew that we really had to reach Kolkotta on the 18th before lunchtime... so the bus on next day wasn't an option. never seen indian men be so active and mental productive... They offered us a trainticket, but they were not sure if seat would still be available. After half an hour of waiting, sitting, spitting, drinking tea and discussing, the men dropped us in an ambassador and a taxidriver took us to the railwaystation... and than, Indian men in action! While we were waiting, somebody came to tell that there was a train in a ... read more

Hi All, Sorry again for the long delay. But this one is a biggie. After spending a week laid up in Manali, hobbled by stomach pains, I was dying to get moving. My gut had made a fairly miraculous recovery after a bold self-diagnosis and subsequent self-medication. I had about two weeks left before I had to fly home to New York, and what had once seemed like an infinite span of time for my travels suddenly felt very crowded. I had one more place that I dreamed of seeing in India. You see, I have always been a lover of tea, and India, as you must know, has one of the best environments in the world to grow it. Of all the places in India that produce tea, perhaps the most distinguished and romantic is ... read more
