We began our last day in Kolkata with a quick stop at the Royal Calcutta Golf Course; it was closed, Monday, so a quick photo had to suffice. On to the Police Station in our district of Kaligat, to give our regards to the District Superintendent and get the name and address of the Commissioner for some follow-up activity on the Force’s 150th anniversary, 2006; done. Then it was on to the Victoria Memorial, this multi-domed, Corinthian columned, monumental building of generous marbled exterior. It is a beauty to behold and is the signature landmark of the city. It stands south of a giant maiden, a park, and needs this huge expanse of open ground to give proportionality to its presence in the landscape. It was built by Lord Curzon, at the time of his Queen’s ... read more

We set aside today to ensure we spend time on the raw side of Kolkata; that is, with those who are poor and without. As in so many cities, it is possible never to come in contact with the underbelly of Calcutta, particularly on so short a stay. We set out of our neighbourhood, on the southern end of the city and headed to the subway, intending to head north and stop off further into city centre than we did yesterday. Well, the Metro does not run until 3:00pm on Sundays. Never mind, we lined up for the Bus 47B headed north. Trouble is, the bus never arrives as such; it floats by the intersection, in the centre lane. You signal to the conductor that you want in, he bangs on the side of the bus ... read more

Am like Mrs 40 Coats here!!! Running round from one job to another, buttttt love it... I have to present the teachers of the 5 city schools with all the equipment I bought for them, on Monday. A bit nervous! I got fruit, vegetable, flowers, parts of the body and Counting to 100 Posters for each school. I also made 8 Colours posters with labels for them and got them laminated. The teachers in one of the schools did these with me. They look great. Also giving each school a copy of the Alphabet book and Counting Book and the Alphabet cards that I got copied and laminated too. Am delighted with how well they turned out. Will take photos on Monday for those whose money I have used to fund that project. Taken lots already ... read more

Kolkata, so far, is a pleasant disappointment to us; it does not live up to its advance notice of a chaotic city, down at the heels; at least not seen through the up beat way its people go about their lives. It might be we can be sanguine about the city, because we chose to stay in a neighbourhood rather than centre town, and that we have not made it to downtown proper as yet; it could also be that our first day among the crowds was today, a Saturday. Whatever; our arrival at the Howath train station was orderly; the environs conveyed a sense of ease. As we searched to find our bearings, people thoughtfully offered help: directions, language translations, no-hassle, pre-paid taxi arrangements. The drive, to our guest-house place of stay, took us across ... read more

Including the week-end in the Sunderbans ...apparently spelled with an s according to newspaper and listing here in the computer .... the stay in Kolkata has lasted ten days. Ask me not what I have done Three days in the Delta, two days spent at cooking class, two days spent with new friends and that basically leaves only three days to see the sights. City tour by bus, Victoria Memorial, 31st Annual Book Fair, India Museum, railway refund and air ticket hassle, two visits to the GPO to mail things, making and visiting with new friends, finding places to eat like the reward lunch and the perfect cup of coffee... shopping for this and that ... email and blog updates....but no zoo or botanical garden. As I sit at the computer the sounds of yet another ... read more

Alive and well .... not eaten by tiger or crocodile.... survivor of boat trip and ship fare! Monday was spent at the apartment of a most pleasant lady whose husband is an architectand who teaches english. She cooked delectable Bengali food whose recipes she provided. The arrival was a bit early so an eye catching ramble thru a totally different layout of a market was engaged in. The market seemed to be under a roof but actually was in the alley between the houses. The fruits and vegetables were arrayed on raised surfaces in geometric order that were pleasing in an artistic sense. And the variety was mush greater. Being led by David from Koli Travel iot was impossible to linger for long. The exit came out onto a breath taking display of flowers in ... read more

February 1 2006 has come and gone and it has been a great day. After some discussion it was decided that we would stick with the devil we know and we have opted to remain at the Broadway Hotel at 27A Ganesh Chandra Ave. because the beds separate, I can hang up my laundry and it dries during the day, sitting in a room full of drinking smoking men will never soon happen again, and even though during this trip my backpack and I are having a better relationship it is not so good that I want to pack it together if I do not absolutely have to! The day began with breakfast and a read of the IndiaTimes...I had to cut out a few pieces; my favourite expression since arriving in India....OHMYGOD.... printed over a ... read more

When I woke up this morning, I was filled with a sudden urge to see the world's biggest banyan tree, which fortunately exists in the Botanical Gardens in Calcutta. What should have been a simple cab ride there turned into a journey via several modes of transport. To start the adventure, my cab driver and I had a grand total of zero languages in common. I should have simply found another cab, but the guy showed willingness to use the meter so I thought I'd cut him some slack. We spent several minutes cruising around trying to find a random person on the street who could translate "Botanical Gardens" into Hindi. When we found such a person, it turned out that it's the same in Hindi as it is in English - unfortunately my driver still ... read more

We are in the heat now... and it is winter in India! Spent a day on a tourist bus roaming around the city. Had absolutely no idea wher we were except we were driving around the city past mentionable buildings which were pointed out on the right but were really on the left and mentioned after the crazed driver, who did not realize he had tourists on the bus who wanted to take shots of the places, had already lurched past aforementioned attraction. Every time the traffic stopped the bus it was beside a not so fragrant pile of rubbish that was either in the process of being picked through for someone's idea of a treasure or was being dumped into a three sided rectangular cement "storage" place or shovelled onto an already overflowing garbage truck.... ... read more
