Well we got a few little surprises during our stay in Lucknow, the first was more embarrassment more than anything but a funny story to have but we will get to that in a moment. We were supposed to be staying with the father of our host from Delhi but since we were completely no relying on the train to drop us of in Lucknow within a 5 hour time frame to let him know what time we would arrive we decided to stay in a hostel. But we still wanted to be able to meet him for dinner that evening. Soon enough we got in contact with him and a few hours later he had organised for us to be picked up by a couple of his workers and we were wizzed of to what ... read more

Hi, I'm checking how this blog is functioning, being a semi-techo-illiterate, I'm oblivious to techno-obviousness :-) I'm have been trying to get a facebookpage online and I'm not really sure if it actually is online... My intention is to import a little bit of Belgian surrealism into Lucknow, Northern India - a city I have chosen to further Study Hindi and Urdu through an internship, private coursework and immersion into the social and cultural life of lucknow. This city, although attractive in itself, doesn't seem to attract a lot of visitors except those studying Urdu. Surreal is the fact that almost all students are Americans... Lucknow has a kind of "past glory" ambiance and although there're some 3 million people living in Lucknow, it's a actually a very relaxed city with parcs, trees and beatifull mosks. ... read more

5. Yusuf, ... read more

The training for our service project took place in the town of Lucknow, which is the capitol of the province of Uttar Pradesh. The northern province of Uttar Pradeshi is India’s most populous state with 166 million (2001 census) and is referred to as the cow belt or Hindu belt. Lucknow has the sprawling congestion that comes with 3 and ½ million residents, but there are some real gems of history tucked away in Lucknow. One such gem is the Bara Imambara, built in the 1780s by the Nawabs who took control of this area after the fall of the Mughal empire. it is a colossal but decaying tomb which has courtyards, gardens, gates, a large step well and a mosque. Most interesting part of the visit was a walk through a maze of stairways, ... read more

Lucknow has been full of wonderful surprises! TOTALLY DELICIOUS FOOD: Roomali rotis (paper thin breads), mutton kebabs (for the carnivores), raita, rogan josh (more lamb meatiness) and tandoori chicken. The little tip we got from an American/Indian dental student---Dastarkwan and Tunday Kebab sent Guillaume into a euphoric eating FRENZY! FANTASTIC SIGHTS:The fabulously designed fantasy school, La Martiniere. Looks like Hogwarts school for witches and wizards. Fully equipped with giant lion statues perched high above the entrance (no longer with smoke pouring out of their mouths when the furnace is turned on, as it scared the locals) and great cannons seemingly protecting the well uniformed young school boys below. Also we stopped by the Bara Imambara. A crumbling old tomb, with gorgeous archways, a magnificent mosque and also featuring a frustratingly complicated labyrinth. As t... read more

After leaving Lumbini, we stayed the night in Sonauli before crossing the border back into india. We actually got through all the Bureaucratic form filling and stamping relitively quickly. We were then on a hunt for a bus back to Gorukhpur. We managed to get exactly the same bus that had taken us to Sunauli in the first place (shudder). The bus was packed to bursting point and I had to endure 2 and a half hours with a bloke asleep on my shoulder and one head on my back. Amy had the relative luxury of being between me and the window. We arrived at Gorukhpur and found a great (glass half full!) little hotel right by the train station for only Rs 250. We went out for dinner where we saw a massive spider on ... read more

Lucknow was fun; we got their too late to actually do anything so we sent Patrick (half of the bus's Canadian population; likes walking, food and walking to get food and/or beer) to get us some twenty ruppee (fifty rs to the dollar) noodles which were very good and bigger portions than most restaraunts. We messed around in the party room for so long that the actual residents chucked us out and we had to go next door. It was one of the best OzBus nights so far, which was good, seeing as someone left my key in the other room and I ended up sleeping on their sofa. I was probably the most comfortable person there, because several people simulataneously decided to have a sleepover and were trying not to breathe too deeply for fear ... read more

After the last post about some of the difficulties of living in Lucknow, I'm glad to share my experience this summer volunteering for Hum Safar, an NGO based in Lucknow but works throughout the state of Uttar Pradesh. 'Hum Safar' means 'Our Journey', and in 2003 began providing legal advocacy and medical advice to victims of domestic violence free of charge. Another important part of their work consists of public outreach activities to promote education about the ills of domestic violence and gender discrimination. On average in a year they deal with 60 individual female victims and conduct about 40 outreach sessions in the greater community, often in local schools and colleges. Part of this outreach is holding meetings in individual neighborhoods in order to organize 'vigilance teams' and 'citizen support groups' so that efforts to ... read more

Last Thursday after class our school organized a trip to explore two of Lucknow’s most famous structures—the Bara Imambarah and the Chota Imambarah. First though, our group was driven to the house of a descendant of one of the Nawabs of Awadh, Mr. Abdullah, for tea and a short lecture about his family and the old Nawabi culture of Lucknow. ‘Nawab’ is a courtly and administrative title that is akin to a governor, and ‘Awadh’ was the name of the regional area with Lucknow as its capital that became the center of official Muslim culture and influence after the British had firmly established themselves in Delhi. Mr. Abdullah had our group into his house where he talked a little about his descendant’s history (they came to Delhi from Nishapur, Iran in the early 1700s) and the ... read more
