Hello everyone. Things are starting to get settled here in Lucknow. I apologize for the lateness of this message, I had no idea it would take this long to set into any sort of regular routine. But anyway, what should I say…(I promise the rest of my posts will not be as long as this) The journey to arrive first in Delhi then in Lucknow was long (30 hours total spent sitting on planes within a four day period) as I went from Chicago to Boston to DC to Chicago again then to Delhi and finally Lucknow. My two days in Delhi were full of orientation activities, and a highlight would have to be when the gentleman in charge of security for official American diplomatic interests in India spoke to our group about matters related to ... read more

I was still not feeling too well and the rest or the group went out into the town to knock on doors and find any children who had not been caught in yesterday's Polio Push. Later in the morning they went to a local school to witness the opening of a new toilet block provided by the local Rotary Clubs of Lucknow. This was a very modern, effective toilet block provided at a cost equivalent to £200 sterling. A snip at that price and something that we could perhaps think about sponsoring in the future. Yesterday there were 2725 vaccination booths operating in Lucknow and altogether over 800,000 children treated. Our booth vaccinated over 300 in the day. The amount of poverty here is something that you have to see to believe. Hundreds of people are ... read more

Sunday 28th April 2008 I woke up feeling extremely queasy but managed to go out with the group to begin the immunisation programme. When we arrived at our medical station it was mahem. There were, what seemed to be, hundreds of children, all swarming around like locusts waiting for their gifts. It was quite a job to control them all. The children receiving the polio drops were mainly babes in arms and toddlers, apparently the strain of polio in this area only affects very young children. The older children aged 5 to 10 years, had come along as observers and to collect any gifts they could. They were very grateful for all the things we gave them. The tent was pitched on sandy soil and next to the tent, where we were immunising the babies, there ... read more

Saturday 26th April Time:- 11:35pm We spent the day learning about the job we are to undertake tomorrow and touring two local hospitals. We have been informed that there will be plenty of work for us to do. This evening we stayed in the hotel for our evening meal. It was a buffet style meal made up of various curries. We were able to find some that were not too hot! At 9:30pm, Geoff and I decided to go outside and take a few photos before turning in. When we got outside we spotted a wedding procession and saw the wedding party in all their magnificent finery and wonderful head gear. There was a firework display too. We were invited to join in the celebrations and watch the various ceremonies. We were on our way back into ... read more

Friday 25th April The temperature today-41 deg C. We spent the morning walking around the town near our hotel, watching people cooking at the side of the road, repairing tuck-tucks and participating in all kinds of roadside businesses, all perfect photo opportunities! We met a man from the Hindustani Times, a local newspaper. He took us into the centre of town to Connaught Place. We visited the tourist Information Centre. Yesterday Geoff and I ordered a blue, cotton made to measure shirt each for £18 each, today we collected them and very nice they are too. At 3.30pm we flew out of Delhi airport for the 2 and a half hour journey to Lucknow. We arrived at 6.00pm to be greeted by lots of buzzing mosquitoes, all desperate to drink our blood! Fortunately, we were well ... read more

So some of you are asking about the course, and if I have been able to last through the 10 days of speechlessness. Well yes, I have. And the talking restriction was the easiest it turned out. Sitting cross-legged for several hours a day and trying not to let my mind dwell on the most unlikely thoughts... that was a little harder. Especially since there was someone playing very loud Hindu music almost all the time somewhere nearby. It troubled us all, but when someone asked the teacher, he would just reply "ah, just ignore it, just focus on your sensations". So forget about the silence. Lucky that I had my earplugs with me, at least that helped a little sometimes. Aside from the music, it was a very peaceful area. No traffic, no chaos. Makes ... read more

The not talking period ended last night, so time to break the blog silence as well. I will write more about the course in the coming days, I just want to let y'all know that I worked my way through those 10 difficult but very interesting days. I am in Lucknow city again, hanging around with some of the people who were on the same course. It feels good to have a little buffer time to spend together after that long silence and intensive self-exploration. 3 of us are taking the train to Varanasi this evening, so that will definately put an end to our feeling of tranquility. But we learned how to be "perfectly equanimous", so we should be able to handle it all ;-) ... read more

After Jaipur, Gaelle and I went straight to the International Airport in Delhi. We arrived there by 15:30 or so, which should have given us plenty of time to pick up the package I had sent to the airport, have a bite to eat and say goodbye. But everything is possible in India, so we actually ended up running short in time. The package was not sent to the International Airport, but to the Domestic Airport. It took almost half an hour to find that out in the first place. So ... rickshaw to the Domestic Airport. Another half hour before we were correctly directed to the office where the package was delivered. Weighed out the weights of Gaelle's backpacks and which part of the package she could take on the airplane. Back to the International ... read more

Despite ye olde bowels still being far from healthy, I managed to down some bananas this morning, which will supposedly assist my recovery. I was also lucky that the hotel (for Rs 100 commission) purchased my onward train ticket for me, which saved me the rickshaw trips to/from the station, plus no doubt a ton of waiting time at Lucknow's notoriously busy reservations counter. With that potential headache resolved, I decided to head out for a spot of sight-seeing. If Westerners know anything about Lucknow, it's that it was the site of a mutiny in 1857, in which 3,000 British and British-sympathisers were put under siege in the Residency building by Indian soldiers - when they were finally relieved, only about 1,000 were still alive. Of course, the other view of this version of events is ... read more

Due to various delays, the train journey stretched by 2 hours to 13.5 hours, which was not welcome in my weakened state. I'd chosen the most luxurious hotel of my trip so far for my stay in Lucknow - the $70 per night Gemini Continental. Though it was in good condition and in some ways bore a resemblance to American motels, it was no better than the place I had stayed in in McLeod Ganj, which had cost less than half the price. Additionally, the restaurant and laundry were both significantly more expensive than anywhere I've stayed. Once more, I was given completely incorrect information about the location of Internet cafes and opticians. I eventually found an area that was crawling with opticians, but it seems as though the only cleaning solution available for gas permeables ... read more
