Lucky Lucknow -Piprey on wheels Lucknow has a royal feel. It used to be the land of etiquette, poetry and subtle behaviour. Urdu language here is at its finest so much so that two people fighting sounds like music. I had an opportunity to visit my cousin and his family; jumped at it. I was so happy to meet my cousin. The airport was small, clean and tidy. The city was small, more like Delhi but refined with architecture showing loads of arches by the river Gomti. There were fishes carved on the arches as it was considered auspicious (I thought the architect was Bengali). My cousin’s flat was spacious with lots of green plants, song birds and an old dog. After tea, we went to a lovely homely place where I tasted authentic Awash biryani ... read more

The past month has flown and we have done a lot of travelling in India, touching four different states in South-, Middle and North India. In this short time we were able to see the differences between some of the different states of India very well. While Bangalore is India’s IT capital, super developed with craft beer breweries and hipster coffee bars abound, Bihar is clearly one of the poorest states, a dry state with no alcohol, with people moulding cow shit into fuel patties barehanded. After our wonderful wedding week in Pune we found our (rail)way to Mumbai, where we spent a few days exploring the city before flying to Mangalore and immediately continuing a bit north to Udupi and then onwards to Gokarna. Gokarna was one of the beach towns in South India we ... read more

‘Lucknow’ is not a destination. It is a journey. From being laid down by Lord Lakshmana to being ruled by Mughal emperors to being the administrative capital during the British Raj to finally being the capital of Uttar Pradesh … “Lucknow” has seen it all … & how!! … & through all of this Lucknow proudly has lived up to its reputation of being a city of culture, gracious living, rich cuisine & beauty. Lucknow comes across as a fairly simple & easy city. Traces of each of the era the city has lived through are sure to be seen & felt quite easily & adequately. The city will happily hold your hand & show you around. It is quite miraculous. Once in Lucknow, celebrations of “Bada Mangal” cannot be missed. It is a festival devoted ... read more

From the moment we arrived at New Delhi train station until the second we arrived at the door of Tharpa House, 5 Park Road, uncertainty has beset our hours. We have taken a massive roundtrip from Delhi to Agra, Agra to Jhansi, and Jhansi to Lucknow during which I have felt like we've just about kept our heads above the surface. Firstly it has felt much like people's only interest in us, whether it was unwanted hassle or superficially nice aid, was based around getting money from us. Often this wasn't even a huge amount but it is the assumption that we, as white tourists, must have money to chuck around. It is the first time I have felt really subjectified by my white skin. It isn't the end of the world but during the midst ... read more

Kathmandu to Dharamsala. Three days in transit. Three buses, two trains, one night in a horrible hotel in India's sex trafficking capital. Hectiness. Heat. Organised chaos. Single very white female walking the streets of India alone with no train ticket. Near breakdown. Somehow amongst the chaos that very alone, very out of place female managed to play the poor innocent white girl card and obtain VIP status for a ticket on what was, at the time, a full train to Lucknow. Western girl in traditional clothing turning up to a Western shopping mall in an Indian city, with the locals wearing western clothes.I think you call that irony. Top bunk in AC3 for an overnight journey with lovely company. Free Indian food from a lovely family and then falling asleep with a blanket on because the ... read more

Lucknow So after a 2hrs 10 min flight from Bengaluru with Indigo we arrive at Lucknow airport just in time for sunset at 6pm. A few observations here: The flight itself is good as usual with Indigo and the service excellent for a low budget airline. However, what catches our attention in the Indigo flight magazine is the Recruitment advertisement and the advert – extolling the “Girl Power” of their air stewardesses. Boy, are they blatantly and overtly sexist and racist in tone and content. Which is appalling and irresponsible for a corporate company at a time when India is struggling with the concept of the role of women in modern India and the inequalities and injustices they endure. We decide to write to the Company about this in the strongest terms and copy ... read more

The night was short and I left Ayodhya on a tempo with a bunch of school girls destination Faizabad to take a bus to Lucknow. The bus itself was a dirty piece of rusty metal. People would wipe the seats with newspapers before sitting down. The ride was shorter than I had anticipated: two and a half hours. It was semi-comfortable as I had to keep my big bag on my lap and there was little legroom. I sat next to an engineering student (everybody I meet seems to be one!) checking his notes on the Leibniz theorem. Another guy tried talking to me but the pan he was chewing and the broken English didn’t make for a very productive conversation. Once in Lucknow I get robbed 50 rupees by a rickshaw to the train station ... read more

Geo: 26.862, 80.9359Thankfully my hotel is just across from the train station so I manage to dodge the tuktuk's and just walk over to the hotel. I'm only staying here one night and I'm kind of glad as there isn't another tourist anywhere in sight! I went out to explore, jumped in a rickshaw (after I agreed a price) for a tour round but it doesn't look a very nice place, really dirty and no sights to see. I did stumble on a huge local market though which reminded me of the Barras markets, I enjoyed watching them shouting out what I presume was prices and deals of the day.I ate in a local dabba, but it was funny when I walked in everyones' eyes were on me, it felt a bit weird. I was fascinated ... read more

So we have reached day 7 and are still trying to settle into India. Is massively overwhelming, loud and bright. We went to the Taj Mahal which was really beautiful. Much larger than we both thought it would be, stunning creamy white, intricately detailed with stars and flowers. It was really busy there, even though we were there really early. Lots of European and Japanese tourists as well as huge numbers of Indian families. We wandered around for a few hours but had to leave as my stomach told me to! We are currently in Lucknow, staying in a home stay which is nice. Is in a quiet suburb so there is much less noise and fuss (and smell). We get a good breakfast too which is useful as we have now started the dreaded malaria ... read more

I took a break from Varanasi after realising a week there would be too long, and headed for Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh and site of the 1857 Lucknow Siege. The Siege was one of the major parts of the 1857 Indian Rebellion. The six month siege of the Residency was caused by the British East India Tea Company annexing the state of Oudh and kicking out the leocal Muslim leadership. This and less than considerate actions towards Muslim and Hindu religion led to the outbreak of rebellion. The siege was eventually broken by Sir Colin Campbell. A consequence of the rebellion, as well as the atrocoties committed by the British in it's aftermath, was the dissolution of the British East India Companywas dissolved and India governed directly by the Crown. Lucknow turned out to ... read more
