although it has been nice to just sit here in the desert for almost three weeks, it is time to move on... i leave tommorow on an overnight train to Mumbai (Bombay)... from there another three hour train to Igatpuri and Dhamma Giri for another 10-day vipassana retreat... i look forward to this time as an opportunity to change the habits of daily life, the habits that have been emerging over decades... every retreat is supposed to be an operation on the mind to change the ingrained habits... let's operate... i have been attempting my meditation but still feel the need for the support of a sangha, a community of dhamma brothers and sisters... my time here in pushkar was spent wandering through the desert, wandering through market streets with camels, watching beautiful sunsets while spinning ... read more

Yesterday I went on a camel Safari which was just amazing. Some of the other people didn't turn up so Johnny the camel had to go by himself (with no friends). He did not like this atall and made alot of fuss, this was very amusing as two of us were on him. He left spinning around and trotting off, was hilarious. Anyway we went to this guy's house where whilst I ate some lunch cooked by his family he fixed Johnny up to a cart, so he thought he 'had a job to do'. I wasn't very happy about this but it turned out to be really good. We travelled around the desert going up and down sand dunes and around mountains. We sat in the cart to being with and then later on, I ... read more

have headed south since i last posted... not a very hardy canadian any more i guess since i am trying to avoid the cold ;-)... why put yourself in the situation if you have a choice, better way to look at it... pushkar is just a small town built around a holy lake and what i believe is the only Brahman temple in india (would have to look that one up if your intereseted)... the place is fairly peaceful, the entire lake, save for a bridge, is surrounded by ghats (no beach;-), there are many places to see over the lake from rooftop restaurants... camel rides seem to be the thing to do here since it is desert... there are camels in town everyday, first time for me, i appreciate it greatly... i have just been ... read more

I left Jaipur yesterday and travelled on two buses to get to Pushkar, a little town in the desert. Much nicer than all those big city's - I feel as though I can breath! It is set round a small lake with various hills around with numerous temples on top. I think I will stop here for a while :) I went for a walk yesterday and planted myself on the egde of the waters watching the sunset. Within minutes more and more people kept turning up, as many westerners as Indians, juggling, doing circus tricks, playing musical instruments, beggers, people selling stuff, priests, animals. Then a team of drummers came up and started playing and this man with a head and face of grey hair starts going CRAZY to the music, dancing everywhere, up and ... read more

The Main Temple is open three side with a traditional roof over the area where the deity is seen blessing the devotees. They allow photography everywhere. There is a temple of lord Shiva in the Paataal (meaning: Nether World ) here. The surrounding village is also worth exploring. Localities here are polite and co-operating. Very simple and traditional you would see most of the road side dhabas here featuring a lady clad traditionally preparing the Chapaattis (a delicacy similar to tortilla). Food is good. Apply some common sense and be observant to avoid food poisoning though. To conclude this post I would say keep your cameras ready when you are there. You should visit the temple if you are: * An artists, writers etc, to seek blessings from Godess Saraswati the consort of lord Brahma. * ... read more

The place where it all began. Legend has it that Brahma dropped a lotus here and performed the ritual of creating all life here. The lotus was originated from Vishnu’s naval, the legend adds. But this is not the only legend associated with the lake. What you hear from people and priests about this lake, can be overwhelming, but it’s a place worth vesting for sure. It’s a ‘must visit’ for Hindus who believe in pilgrimage as its known as the Tirth Raj and they say no pilgrimage is complete if you have not visited Pushkar. Surroundings are pretty messy and with people including most of the priests pretty greedy. But as soon as you get close to the lake, the lake mesmerizes you -it mesmerized me- and you tend to forget and forgive. I guess ... read more

Pushkar Sorry there are not many pics, but believe us when we say that this is the nicest place we've been to so far. We were so busy relaxing, we forgot to take pictures. Pushkar itself is only 2 kilometers across and with no tuk tuks and no hassle from people in the street- which was refreshing. We haggle for our first hippy clothes- 5 pounds goes a long way in India. The town surrounds a pretty lake- even despite a horrible fake priest that makes you give money for his horrible fake "blessings". We enjoyed our banana lassies on the rooftop surrounded by little boys flying hteir kites.... read more
