so i've recently spent 8 days in pushkar, now i have mixed feelings about the place. Admittedly it's got a lot of culture and history to it, however it's a little too Market driven for my taste. Now as anyone who knows me knows that i love to shop, there's only so much a girl can take. Well this girl, Moran and leeio are frickin machines, they shopped every day for at least 6 hours a day while i was there and stayed longer because they weren't done yet. Meir and I decided once we were completely worn out by the market that it was time to rent a scooter and scoot around the town looking at temples and other sites. After a visit to the Brahma temple and the Ghats we decided that we weren't ... read more

On Valentines day we transferred by private jeep to Ranthambhore National Park which is famous for its tigers. For three hours in the afternoon we were bumped around in a big safari bus & saw Samba deer, blue bulls, Indian Gazelles, meercats, monkeys, kingfishers, trepies and what we were told was a leopard but looked distinctly like a spotted rock to me.... but no tigers. The next morning me and two others from our group got up at 5am to have another try, an hour in we saw one, he was walking in front of the truck for a couple of minutes and at one point was about 5m away from me, awesome, utterly awesome! Since then our group has continued to travel through a diverse combination of palaces lakes & castles by train bus rickshaw ... read more

Esta vez primero en Ingles, mas abajo en espanyol. Och well, as I was saying, I am a bit disappointed. The other day I wrote a very interesting entry in my blog after an incident in Pushkar and I don't know what happened but the entry is not there and I don't know if a can write it with the same emotions. On the positive side I have reflected on it and I would really appreciate your opinions. Ok, Let’s go!!! After a long trip (very long indeed) we finally arrived from Bharatpur to Pushkar, both towns are in the same region: Rajasthan. Rajasthan is the Indian region that attracts the biggest number of tourists. Having said this, our stay in Bharatpur was lovely; people in the town and the Bird Sanctuary were great and very ... read more

MMMMMmmmmmmmm how do I describe Pushkar, well for a start alcohol, meat and eggs are all banned and we are here for 2 days - did I mention alcohol was banned by the way, just thought I’d mention it again incase you missed it… The best way I can describe Pushkar is too try and imagine Byron Bay in Australia and remove alcohol and add religion - a lot of religion, and of course shops and more shops... There's definately also a real hippy feel about the place anyway which is pretty cool, one of the things to do in Pushkar (which doesn't involve drinking of course), is watching the sunset over the lake which was absolutely beautiful and definately worth doing, as for what else to do in Pushkar, did i mention there are shops ... read more

I have been in Rajasthan for the past 10 day. It is the driest part of India and home to the mighty Thar desert. Started of in Jodphur. There is a huge fort here which seems to rise straight out of the desert. We did the tourist thing and looked round it with an audio guide! It was interesting and really impressive though with loads of cool weopons! We then went to Jaisalmer where we met up with Sholto. There is another fort here but this time we stayed in the fort. Our room was in the fort wall and was like a desert palace room! It is amazing some of the places you can get for just over 2 quid a night! From here we were taken out in to the desert and did a ... read more

We're now in Pushkar, home of the famous camel fair that happens every November. The town is small and quiet compared to the other Indian cities we've been to, and this is a blessing! From Agra we drove to Jaipur, stopping off at Fatehpur Sikri along the way....Fatehpur Sikri is an ancient town that was at one time the capital of Mughal India, but has since been abandoned and the whole complex has been preserved in immaculate condition. Where once there must have been thousands of courtiers, now the pigeons rule the roost, making for an interesting experience in this ghost town. After a rather quick visit there we continued on our way to Jaipur, driving along the scariest road yet! Normally the "highway" is one lane in either direction, but since they decided to improve ... read more

We arrived in Pushkar late in the evening. We were glad to have an experienced driver. Daytime driving is hairy enough, much worse at night, especially on the curvy road from Ajmer to Pushkar. Our driver found a beautiful hotel in the fashion of a fine mansion (Haveli) on the edge of town, with floors made of marble. Cost: less than $C15 per night for two of us. We planned to stay 2 nights. Pushkar is a holy city of about 15,000, with anywhere from 200 to 1000 temples (depending on who you talk to). IN the morning Jamie and I walked down to the lake, supplied by groundwater (there has been hardly any rain in recent years), and considered holy - a little like the Ganges. Accordingly the townside of the lake contains ghats or ... read more

Before we even checked into the hotel yesterday we were taken to another "friendly" travel agent and it was suggested we go on a Camel trek. Neither of us were particularly bothered so we said no. It was amazing how quickly the price came down! We ended up paying about half the orginal price just because we weren't that bothered about going! Checked into the hotel which is very nice (but it should be at the price we paid!). And then pretty much straight away went out on the Camel trek. Neither of us had even asked how long it was or anything but I was a little worried when our camel driver(?) said it would be 3 hours before we got to where we were going to have dinner. On the way we stopped and ... read more

I'm writing this from Pushkar, since my last posting I have travelled from Rhanthambore National Park to Jaipur and then to Pushkar. On the way from Rhanthambore to Jaipur, Juan - our travel-mate - suggested that we leave the main road and visit a more isolated small village away from the highway. We had been driving through innumerable roadside villages, but we wanted to see a smaller one. Our driver turned off onto an unpaved road, drove about 2 km and entered a very small village. When the four of us got out of the car, we were suddenly the centre of attention and were soon surrounded by children as well as adults. We were invited into a home, consisting of mud huts around a compound. The village was basic, but clean. The villagers were fairly ... read more
