My worst evening so far. We were invited by some couchsurfers we had met the previous night to go to their city farm the following day to have some food together. We accepted on condition that we'd be home by 11 pm as we had to catch an early bus in the morning. By 12 am food was not even ready yet. In the meantime they had drunk two bottles of whiskey between the four of them and had started to become annoying and made us feel really uncomfortable. They wanted us to be cheerful, laugh at their stupid jokes and join in the drinking but at that time of the night we were too tired for any of that. One of them in particular was really unbearable and I had to restrain myself in order ... read more

We left Kiradu around 6pm and reached Jaisalmer around 8pm. We already had our reservation at Hotel Raj Mandir, which is located ON the walls of the fort. Jaisalmer is the only live-in fort in India. The life inside the fort is amazing – narrow streets, colorful shops, numerous eating joints, and a few touristy places. We selected a hotel inside the fort to have some ‘heritage’ feel. Our small hotel has only 6 rooms and a roof-top dining area, but the views from the room and the roof-top are breath-taking! (The above sunrise panorama was taken from the room.) Date: 4-Nov-2010 Next morning, we woke up around 8, got ready, had our breakfast at the hotel, and left for sight-seeing around 10am. The owner of the hotel had made arrangements for the guide. I would ... read more

:) ... read more

Well, we survived the train just about. Talk about confusing!! We arrived at the train station with an hour to spare, found the screen which said platform 10. Ok we thought maybe this won't be so bad. We followed the signs to platform 10 but when we got there the platform had turned into platform 8. Confusion level 1! So we looked around for someone to ask but there was nobody apart from some policemen but they couldn't speak English, one of them pointed to one side of the platform and the other pointed to the other side! Confusion level 2! We waited around a little longer being stared at, when we saw a train right at the other end of the platform so we walked up there. It was our train! Yippee! Sadly not, our ... read more

Unfortunately our train from Jodpur to Jaisalmer arrived precisely on time. I was expecting the usual small delay of a couple of hours so was not entirely ready to depart the train when it came to a stop at 5am sharp. I woke with a start and instinctively sat bolt upright, banging my head on the bunk above and disturbing the thick layer of dust and sand that had entered the windows overnight to settle on my sheet sleeping bag. My morning yawn sucked a great lung full of this desert accretion deep into my lungs which triggered a coughing fit, which caused me to again bang my head, which disturbed more dust, which caused me to swear, which necessitated a large lung full of air... I did manage to extricate myself from this unfortunate self ... read more

I have previously wondered why Indian public transport seems so devoid of westerners. Where are all the backpackers going, and how are they getting there? Well now I know the answer. They are all on the train to Jaisalmer. At the station me and French-Canadian Girl (henceforth, for the sake of convenience, to be known as FCG), actually met some other tourists! Who talked to us! This was quite unlike my previous solitary railway experiences, where I have been either totally alone or studiously ignored by the one other white dude. I then found, to my total astonishment, that my carriage was full of French boys, who were nice but visibly annoyed at having to switch to broken English in order to avoid linguistically shunning me (see! it happens all the time). Arriving in Jaisalmer at ... read more

We caught the night bus from Udaipur to Jaisalmer, about 12hrs. At around 3am in the morning we were told to get off the bus and change onto another bus. We were dropped off in the middle of nowhere, half asleep and had no idea what was going on!! Luckily 5mins later another bus pulled up and we were on our way. Arrived in Jaisalmer at about 10am the next morning, as we got off the bus we were met by hoards of touts wanting our business all screaming in our face, was a nightmare!!! Before we got to Jaisalmer we had arranged with the hotel in Udaipur a hotel that would pick us up. We found our guy and were relieved to get in the car. We made our way to the Himalayan Guest House ... read more

Day 10 - 12 (Camel Safari) Bright and early at 6am was when we were told to meet outside the trotters shop window ready to get picked up by a jeep. I was wearing baggy black trousers with a khaki Indian tee, I completed my desert look with a headscarf wrapped round my face like a mask, with just a slit for the eyes, Simon was ready before me and was just enjoying the morning on the balcony. I ran up to him at full speed and shouted “give me all your money” expecting a little crackle of laughter or something. Instead what I hear is a large clang and then a pretty loud smash. My smile dropped as I looked at Simon: “what was that”, “An ashtray mate”. I mean, who puts an ashtray on ... read more
