Hello All! It’s only been three weeks, but it feels like forever! Things are happening back in home in Atlanta- the house is undergoing a design transformation, and Kendra has a killer job at the Atlanta Aquarium. I just returned from a camel safari in Jasailmere, and I fear my life has changed forever. My new favorite animal is, without a doubt, the dung beetle. Not only do they serve a magnificently honorable role of cleaning up all the poop from the desert, they do so in the most admirable way: by running with their tiny beetle legs and rolling the poop along the desert floor. The camel poop (as it most often is) obtains a lovely coating of fine sand. When the beetle has found the proper ground, he or she then proceeds to dig, ... read more

Alright, so more decent internet means another bloggy blog. It's currently our last night in Rajasthan in northwestern India so I'll fill in on the last 10 days. We left Kochi and jumped a plane to Mumbai, then a quick connection to Udaipur. Landing in Mumbai was interesting just to see all of the slums around the airport. It put real images in my mind to match the fictional ones I had from movies like Slumdog Millionaire. And from my brief glimpses, I feel I can vouche for the validity of it all. The flights went as smooth as I could have hoped for and connecting in Mumbai was easy. Upon landing in Udaipur the announcment went, "Ladies and Gentlmen, welcome to Udaipur where the current time is 6:30 p.m and the current temperature is 40 ... read more

What exactly is a camel safari? Take 4 Western travelers, 2 from Spain 2 from the USA. Put the travelers on top of one of the world's most stubborn animals, the camel. Bring in one guide, a local villager who has spent his entire life in the Great Thar Desert. Spend the next two days riding across the desert on camelback stopping at remote villages without electricity, napping under trees to beat off the daytime heat, and sleeping on a sand dune under the stars. Finish the journey with a newfound appreciation for the starkness of desert life, and enjoy your first bottle of chilled water like never before when you arrive back in town. After leaving the sick room in Jaipur, Caroline and I spent the next five days in Pushkar, a Hindu pilgrimmage town, ... read more

Steph sadly got the 'Delhi Belly' the day we were due to go on our camel safari so I had to decide whether to go on my own. I did as I knew another guy from the evening before that was going on his own too. It turned out that it was a small group of four with a couple from Singapore making up the numbers. We took a jeep out into the desert. The landscape was baron and there seemed to be nothing for miles. We stopped at several places along the way including an area where the rock was covered in fossils of sea creatures. Apparently the site used to be a massive oasis...It definitely didn't look that way now!! After a stop to see the groom at a traditional India wedding and for ... read more

There was lots of good climbing in Jaisalmer. I climbed out one of the windows in the secret house. I'm not sure if I was allowed to do that. In the secret house there were stairs with different sizes. Dad got caught in a trap. He smashed his head on one of the doors. The secret was you had to duck your head! The stairs trap was very slippery. We looked in the big pots. I think it was the kitchen area in the secret house. Aiden was jumping over an Indian head. A man was walking underneath. We went out of the fort for breakfast. There was a little cafe near the big tree. It was a good place with a German bakery like in Nepal. I had a chocolate croissant and a cheese and ... read more

Mark's tour guiding was taking us to Jaisalmer. As the arrangements brought themselves together in the couple of weeks prior to having the opportunity to make the visit, I was invited to stay with Lucky (Laxmanji) who found me through Couchsurfing. He became the first of many of the inspirational characters we had the pleasure of meeting, who call Jaisalmer home. We rolled into town in perfect time for the Gangaur festival. This is an annual event, with great significance for the women of Rajasthan and an 18 day fast (Indian style where eating occurs only in the evening) commences. Goddess Gauri (Shiva's consort) is worshiped. Their union is said to symbolise saubhagya (marital bliss). Unmarried girls pray for a good spouse while the married women pray for long life and the good health of their ... read more

We sat at the main bus stand in Udaipur waiting for our bus to arrive and take us on a 9 hour journey to Jaisalmer via Jodhpur. As we waited on a cold metal bench straddling our backpacks we observed our surroundings: Some modded rickshaws with neon lights and huge speakers blared around the roundabout and past our bench, a stray dog craved some attention which was given to it by a large Indian gentleman sitting on a bench across from us, some begging children asked for chapatti, schoolpens and baksheesh (tip), and people seemed to keep coming and going as we waited. After 30 mins of waiting someone behind the counter of the company we booked with asked us for our ticket which we gave and it seemed to vanish worryingly into a black hole ... read more

It has been along time but we are now finally in India. The flight into Delhi wasn't too bad. Being a total journey of 20 something hours; Guatemala - Miami, Miami-Newark, Newark-Delhi. If we had known before hand that we must enter the US we would have taken a different route. Its a nightmare. Fingerprints recorded, photo taken, many useless questions to be answered. We fought having a 4 hour gap between our flights would be nice and relaxing. It wasn't. We spent the whole time just entering the States and then going through security again to leave. Pointless! Anyway, back to India. After landing at 23:00 we were luckily picked up by our hostel. The car however was something else. It made the Bolivian vehicles look like Bentleys. And if the car wasn't enough to ... read more

Let see... Where did I leave off... Jaisalmer! After our camel safari we enjoyed about 2 and a half days where we did some shopping... and more excitingly got to better know our host, Ashraf who had been away when we first arrived. Such a lovely soul who spent much of his 20s visiting different ashrams and temples of different faiths in India where he did a lot of meditating. I enjoyed a couple afternoons of sharing stories about our spiritual journeys: such a joy to find kindred souls along the way. If anyone is ever in Jaisalmer you must stay at Apollo hotel. When Ashraf is there, he offers 4 different types of free meditation (including kundalini and other both active and still meditations). He was also setting up for Bangra dancing for the guests ... read more

Jan 26th- Settled down for night after two and a half days of being out on the open road (aka - The Great Thar Desert!). We took a camel safari an hour into the desert along with an Aussie couple, an older French couple from Marsailles, and a 30 something French guy from Paris. We rode the camels for about 2 hours before stopping for lunch. Handmade chapati bread with cabbage/veggie curry! Yummy! And of course Chai tea. Love Chai tea now!! Mom go get some from Starbucks! Austin - we have a date at Starbucks for some Chai tea when I fly back into Brussels! Us, the tourists, took a nice little nap in the sun before setting off for a good 2/3 hours of riding to the sand dunes. We settled for nighttime at ... read more
