Jaipur was a memorable experience and now I was excited to see more of Rajasthan. Next on my list was Jaisalmer which is approx. 575 km from Jaipur and takes 8 – 9 hours. Jaisalmer is the city of sand dunes and I wanted to try out the camel safari that I had heard so much about. Since I wanted to see the expanse of the desert, I decided to go by road and rented a car with a driver. Since this was going to be a long trip, I took a 6-pack Godfather Strong along. Cars along with driver who can act as guides are available from private rental car companies and even the State tourism Department. I decided to take the car and driver, from the State Tourism Department. Beni Prasad, my driver was ... read more

We were packed up and on our way by 9am we planned a visit the Hawa Mahal the five story pink sandstone fairytale palace built by Maharajah Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799 to enable the royal ladies to see processions in the city without being seen. Hawa Mahal means Wind Palace and to fully appreciate it we got ourselves a guide who told us a number of fascinating stories about eunuchs and secret passage ways. The palace has some stunning rooms with stain glass windows and beautiful decoration and surprisingly we had only langur monkeys for company. Towards the end of the tour our guide told us of a craft emporium where I might get a tradition shield or knife so we decided to go have a look, the shop was down a back street near ... read more

We left Delhi at the rather disagreeable time of 05.15am, though I actually woke up at 04.00am. Having gone to bed the previous night at 2.00am this was a challenging beginning to what would be a rather long and challenging drive. We travelled 480km from Delhi to Bikaneer in just over 13 hours! It was a long difficult and uncomfortable day but it did at least allow me to get to know some of the group members better. Saying that though, for the last few hours of the drive I put my headphones and listened to the ipod as I had hit the ‘wall’ and didn't have the energy to do anymore talking. A quick pointless note, when I refer to the ipod, I call it 'the' Ipod as it is actually mums and not mine. ... read more

At 2:30pm, we departed for our camel safari which included a 2 hour camel ride, dinner in the sand dunes and a night of camping under the stars. After an hour ride in a jeep to the desert we arrived at our camels: 5 for us to ride and 1 pulling a cart with our bags and tour guide. Getting on the camel was easy but when the camel stood up it was quite daunting. One must lean back as far as possible in the saddle so you don't fall forward onto the neck of the camel. I thought I would be more scared but I must have gotten past my little fear as I never have even gone horse back riding (Aaron & Amanda would be ashamed of me). The camel ride was very peaceful ... read more

Our tour guide Dinesh instructed us that we would need to leave for the train station some three hours prior to its departure. The traffic in Delhi is always heavy and unpredictable as to how long the journey will actually take; so better safe than sorry. Arriving at the train station in old town Delhi we were faced with quite a different atmosphere than the stations in China. We’ve seen our fair share of run down sketchy train stations but this one seemed to be unlike any other we’ve encountered. For one there were monkeys running a muck and were likely at any point to try to forcefully take your food. Second, there were no indoor waiting areas so we sat near the train tracks that had a strong stench of nothing good. There were of ... read more

A fairytale vision in the desert gives way to tourist traps, crumbling facades and muck on the dusty city streets. Somewhat reluctantly we “cough up” the 600 Rupee entry fee and mandatory camera charge then head into the modest “Palace” complex armed with audio guide. Short on accessible buildings and museum displays the palace has honed the mythical angle of its history, quickly dispenses with the rudimentary “palanquin, sword, throne” and filling the void with fabulous fabrication and speculation. Is that stone swan really drinking pearls of milk flowing from the lactating mother’s breast down her lustrous locks? With aplomb the dearth of artifacts is compensated for through flights of fancy. Exhibits holding the greatest promise: stamp, coin and sword collection, were apparently behind securely padlocked doors and on enquiry the indolent attendant replied, “17, ... read more

JAILSALMER IS A FEAST FOR YOUR SENSES. It is a land of camels, jewels, lavish havelis (ancient mansions) and vibrant culture. After another long train ride we tumbled out of the locomotive at the break of day with wrinkled clothes and puffy eyes into the arms of this ‘Golden City’, named so for its glowing sandstone fort. We may as well have stepped onto the set of Arabian Nights. A huge golden fort, like a sand castle built by giants, towered over the historic town. On all sides of it desert life passes idly by: camels sat lazily in the streets drooling on the pavement, women in heavy brass jewelry and neon colored saris walked by and bright woven carpets hung from every window sill.In short, it is the India of my dreams Travis and I ... read more

We started our morning at Krishna Guesthouse with a breakfast of four pieces of white toast, one chapatee, butter, lovely jam, and coffee that I could not drink due to some spices in it. Just a matter of taste though, not bad coffee. I wasn't impressed with breakfast, but overall, our stay at Krishna was good and a good price I think for all that was included (2400Rs for two people). After breakfast we packed up and drove the 40km to Jaisalmer. Hardev suggested we use a guide and given the size of the old city, we agreed. It is the best way to cover a lot of ground in a day. He introduced us to Padem and he seemed knowledgeable and spoke excellent English, so we hired him for the day not knowing how much ... read more

Geo: 26.9118, 70.9127As some of you know I have wanted to go on a camel safari for a very long time. It has finally happened and I am happy to say - been there done that! This morning we headed out on a camel safari. We spent the better part of the day riding camels. Rocket, Richard's camel is a racing camel and I had Raj – she was just a run of the mill camel but we got along well. Overall, it was quite fun but as the hours went on, we were very glad we did not bike yesterday. Our butts were really feeling it! We had a very long, leisurely stop for lunch. We relaxed and the camels wandered. The camel drivers cooked lunch. After eating and waiting for the camels to be rounded ... read more
