Hi from Delhi; I arrived at my hotel at 3am last night, tired, but not really that jet lagged. I took some anti jet lag pills and they seem to have worked well - I travelled half way around the world, and I was able to get up after only 6 hours of sleep. Now I've been touring around town all day in an autorickshaw, its 615pm, and I am not yet tired. So I left the hotel around 930, and started walking. I did this in Paris and it worked well, but here it sucked. The drivers here are crazy by North American standards, but it seems to work well for them. A lane here doesn't mean one car, it means as many as can sort of fit in the lines, if you feel like ... read more

Today is Sunday so alot of places are closed. We set off to visit the Bahai'i Temple in Southern Delhi. It's a Temple that's devoted to all religions and all are welcome to come and pray or meditate according to their own faith. It's a beautiful place and families come from all over India to visit. It was great to see everyone dressed up for a day out; some of the saris the Indian women wear are exquisite. Obviously some had never seen white folk before as we were asked to pose for photographs with 3 different families!!!!! When we first arrived in India we made a point of wearing our oldest scruffiest stuff to blend in and not look to fresh. This being day 3 and us feeling more confident we risked wearing new white ... read more

Hello again. Today we sorted out our mobile and our new number is 0091119873381035. If you text, let us know who you are as we don't have your numbers with us...sorry! Our hotel is basic but clean. We have 'bucket' hot water and showering with a jug takes a little getting used to but we have a western style toilet so who cares! Also no signs of scuttling or furry friends. Bonus. We headed into Old Delhi and took a rickshaw tour that lasted about 3 hours. Our driver, Akbar brought us around all the various markets. Here they devote entire parts to just one product; spices, silks, electronics, jewellery etc. Some of the stuff was beautiful, some complete tack, but we're both terrified of the stall owners. If you show even a flicker of interest ... read more

We went this morning to Akshardham, a newly-built temple on the outskirts of Delhi. It's vast, and has been built entirely through charitable donations. It seems strange to find a building like this with the plaster still wet- stranger still that it has parking for 10,000 and an Imax theatre in an adjoining building! We visited the National Museum of India in the afternoon- interesting, but in need of a serious once-over with the dustbuster. Touring round Delhi in the evening, we were involved in our first traffic accident- one of the rear wheels came off our rickshaw. I can report that rickshaws travel more slowly with only two wheels; the ride quality is unaffected. Early train to Amritsar tomorrow.... read more

Hello everyone ! So here we are.... Delhi appears to be a city of extreme contradictions. We got off the plane to be greeted by a troop of women, all in brightly coloured beautiful saris with pick axes and shovels and carrying mountains of broken concrete on their heads. They were carrying out major road works whilst carring their offspring - from there on it has gotten steadily wierder! Cows just dander up streets, street vendors sell everything from roasted peanuts to ear cleaning services... and don't even ask about the roads. Traffic in Delhi is completely mad, no lanes and no law. From what we can gather the rules of the game are to drive as quickly and creatively as possible in the general direction of all other vehicles, constantly bumping your horn. Drivers only ... read more

On the flight over, the captain appraised us of the weather in Delhi. '75 degrees and rather smelly' were his exact words. A few minutes later he came on again and elaborated; no criticism of Indian hygeine was implied, simply an observation that in his view the air was very sulphurous. We touched down at 1.15am on Friday morning. After an long queue through immigration (due to insufficient manpower- too many chiefs...) we retrieved our bags and met up with our hotel driver. The hotel Ajanta is nice enough, and our room is spacious enough for a family of elephants. They could do with running the hot water a bit longer, and the travel agency in the hotel could back off somewhat from the constant hard-sell, but all in all it's a fine place to stay. ... read more

29/11/05 Summary: Not much really happened here and we spent most of our time adjusting to indian life. It's not been a culture shock as such because I had already been told what this place is like but what suprised me was that nothing i had heard had been an understatement. Nothing. Everything: Having been delayed a day from a late flight and having to stay overnight in Dubai (all expenses paid - very nice) i arrived at a hotel at about 6.am with three other guys (Rupert, Paul and Tony) i met on the plane. We all decided to have a couple of quick beers (remember the time difference) and some food. After that they all went to bed and i decided to push through to try and sort out my body clock so i ... read more

My train wasn't due to leave until 11PM this evening, so the hotel owner kindly let me have my room during the day for half price. I can't stress enough the importance of this - in such a crazy city, you need your own little area that no-one else can intrude on. I decided to finish off my Delhi sightseeing by visiting the National Museum, just south of the Raj Path. I was scammed again when I was told I had to hand in my bag at the cloakroom, despite the fact that no-one else did. It cost Rs 600 to get in - 300 for being a foreigner, and 300 for having a camera. You also were paying for an audio tour whether you wanted it or not, and following the audio tour ended up ... read more

Another first was achieved today, in that I purchased a train ticket to Nawalgarh at New Delhi railway station. There's a special section of the station just for foreigners, which is an oasis of calm compared with the madness at the main booking section. It's not the most efficient of systems - you have to fill in a reservation form before you can go to the counter to book the ticket, but half the information that's needed on the form (e.g. train name and number) isn't available until you've been to the counter. My mood darkened after this early success, when my new phone refused to work. Back at the shop, the owner said that he didn't know what was wrong with it, but he had figured out how to unlock my UK phone. Since this ... read more
