We arrived in New Delhi this morning! I started reading 'Are you Experienced' ( thanks Annie!) on the plane and after everyone warning me i was mentally preparing myself for the chaos at New Delhi Airport. Not the case, immigration was swift and efficient as was the collection of our bags. Raj from the hotel had sent someone to collect us - so no problems there. We were amazed though at how he ( and all the other drivers in Delhi) managed to make 5 lanes of traffic when there is clearly only space for 3, well - nothing is impossible here! I have, not surprisingly, already made it to the shops, we had a nap got up and took a rickshaw to the State Emporiums, I have been having dreams of this perfect leather hadbag ... read more

It was pretty darn cold when I woke up around 6am….too many noises and most of the time the train was going at snail pace and I could hear people / vendors at the stations and nearby shouting… No toothbrush hence on finger mode…the hassles of train travel J ah well its part of the experience…. A bit of advice for people who might want to follow this trail: The Grand Trunk Express (GT Ex) was supposed to leave Chennai at 1630 on the 10th and get to Delhi at 0500am on the 12th. The Tamil Nadu Express (TN Ex) was supposed to leave at 2200 on the 10th and get to Delhi at 0700am. Even though GT was getting there earlier since it had a 2.5 hr delay it was getting to Delhi at 0730 ... read more

Yesterday was possibly the most productive day I've had in months. I actually accomplished everything on my to do list and even some things that weren't. Here's what I did (can you tell i'm proud of myself) 1. Went to doctors to get - malaria pills - migrane pills - stomach medication - other random things that i may need in my time there 2. Dropped off my second visa application and cancelled my current visa 3. Dropped off my volunteer assesment sheet that I need for my recreational therapy application 4. Made an appointment with the coordinator of the recreation therapy program. 5. Confirmed all my reservations 6. Bought a Toshiba gigabeat (mp3 player with photo) 7. Saw a friend before he took off for military training of some sort and gave him his christmas ... read more

The face of Vijay Mallya graced the in flight monitors as our Kingfisher Airlines flight took off from Mumbai on Tuesday the 10th of Jan 2006. We were on our vacation to Delhi as part of the Golden Triangle package. It was my maiden Kingfisher flight and I was already beginning to get an inkling into his flamboyant personality. The 'wow' level of customer satisfaction provided by an Indian run airline was commendable. We checked into the hotel and soon left to see the Qutb Minar constructed close to a 1000 years ago. The construction of the ornate tower was started by Qutb udin Aibak in the 12th century and was continued by the subsequent rulers of Delhi, each adding an extra floor thereby establishing their legacy. The tower itself had stood the testimonial of time ... read more

After the concert, we headed back to the apartment to pack/nap. Our flight was scheduled to leave Hyderabad at an unfortunate 2:45am. (Late night flights to the major cities in India are common, I'm told, for people who have to coordinate with international connections). I didn't have much of a nap, and at about 1, our taxi arrived and we loaded up. With no traffic in the middle of the night, we made it to the airport in no time. The airport was surprisingly bustling, and it took a while to get checked in. Finally, we made it to the waiting room, and I set about working on a suduko puzzle to pass the time. We lined up to board around 3am, and were taken to the airplane - parked way out on the tarmac - ... read more

So I'm off in 11 days, it's a little surreal. I have about a billion things to do before i go including writing a massive report for work and training someone to take over my project. Good times, good times. Other then the fact that I have to be in Mysore by february 5th I have absolutely no itinerary. I was originally going to fly to bangalore from delhi and take a train to mysore, but now i'm thinking of taking my time and training it the whole way. Maybe spend a day or so here and a day or so there on the way. My travelling after my course has changed considerably as well. I was planning to go to thailand at some point in time in the summer, however the chance of that happening ... read more

My first day in India and taking some time to relax (and to try to shake off my cold) so felt the impulse to write my first diary entry. If it sounds a bit of an incoherent mish mash , well, that;s just the way it is i'm afraid! To start from the very beginning, the plane journey was not as bad as i had expected...I got put in a window seat right next to the giant boeing 747 wing (you don't want to look at what that thing does to itself when it lands.....metal was not meant to bend like that surely....?). Anyway, evidently, I survived the flight. The only eventful things to occur were for the plane's kitchen to fill with smoke at one point (disconcerting to say the least) and then for the ... read more

Today I am getting ready to go on my second road trip, this time to the south. I am leaving tomorrow morning (Sat. morning) by air to Kerala, one of the southern most states and possibly the most tropical, from what I've heard. I can't wait as I feel more drawn to Kerala than any other place in India; and the single place I want to visit most in India is the very tip of the sub-continent, Kanyakumari, which is actually in Tamil Nadu, but very close to Kerala. This is where three oceans meet, and the place where Mahatma Gandhi's ashes were scattered. It is my plan to go there on new year's day and pray and meditate. I love Delhi, and am feeling very at home here, but I am tired of the chill ... read more

It was very difficult to sleep last night with the constant horns outside and all sorts of weird noises in the hotel. The hotel is the downer of the trip so far. We have very little hot water, only a trickle. However, the breakfast was great - chai, masala dosai, and uttapam. Sanjay picked us up in a white ambassador. First, we went to the Laxshmi Narain temple, but we didn’t go inside as it required us to leave our cameras at the door. First day of the trip and I am not that trusting yet. Next, we went to Qtab Minar and explored the entire area. From there, we saw the modern B’Hai “Lotus” temple, and then had lunch at a restaurant called “Chicken Inn”. In America, Indian restaurants are called “India Palace”, “Taste of ... read more

I am finally feeling better, after my second illness since arriving in India. I saw a great doctor yesterday at the Max Medical Clinic -- my home away from home! -- who seemed to get the "big picture." He said I have a virus, no need for medications, and that my immune system is basically getting "primed." In other words, it's all good! It is all part of adjusting .... In the meantime I have watched a LOT of television, including several excellent programs about the one-year anniversary of the tsunami. The news was generally that the incredible generosity of people here and abroad has helped the survivors recover. People have built houses, restored fishing boats and much more. I will find out more when I am in the south (which is where the tsunami struck ... read more
