I think it is time I was honest about my intentions for spending the summer in India. It wasn't for the performance arts training, or the cultural experience, or the food, or the weather, it was solely and most definitely to experience the Kerala Academy of Magical Sciences. Last week, my roommate somehow booked a private show with the highest ranking magician in Kerala. Though his black mock-turtleneck, blazer, and rimless glasses were not what I expected from an expert in Magical Sciences, his show was amazing! It was complete with card tricks, vanishing coins, and though he couldnt show is the famous "Indian rope trick", he did show us an Indian trick with a rope. I was an eager audience participant, and I thoroughly enjoyed the corny jokes he was required to tell, as all ... read more

It was already dark when we arrived at the East Fort Junction where we were met by Matthew, one of the program directors. Matthew, his wife Cassie, and their 4yr old son Avi are from Wisconsin but have been living in Thiruvananthapuram for 2yrs while Matthew has been researching ayurveda medicine in Kerala. His wife has been learning Barhata Natyam an Indian dance form. On the steps of the most prominent temple in Kerala Matthew debriefed us about what to expect at the possession we were about to witness. Of all the information he gave, the point he stressed the most was what to do if we wanted to leave, I think this made all of us (5 of the 9 total students) wonder just what we were getting ourselves into. From the main temple, it ... read more

I am beginning to become accustomed to the heat. The 1/2 time walking pace I've eagerly adopted probably has a hand in that. Sometimes I feel like I am barely moving, but Indian clothes just seem to move better when the wearer is moving slowly. Since we arrived, we've gone shopping twice for clothes that agree with the climate. I have found that salwaar kameez are the most comfortable. This consists of a long (just below the knees) dress/shirt, some light-weight parachute pants and a dupatta (a long scarf). The fabrics are unreal. I could spend hours swimming in the folds of gold, royal blue and dark purple lining the walls of the clothing stores. I think the purchase of an extra suitcase might be in order. In the past week we have been venturing into ... read more

We made our way to Trivandrum today after having breakfast on the balcony...It all went a bit 'fawlty towers' for a while in the hotel with a question about hot water resulting in various responses - * The boy is coming to turn the switch * Let it run for 5 minutes.... * we have solar panels - not always hot! We discovered that the let it run option worked. A request for breakfast early didnt happen so i went down to ask and was met with lots of 'one moment, one moment' and then when the manager arrived I was greeted with gesticulating hands and 'terribly sorry, terribly sorry' while he explained somthing about sleeping. (we are the only people here so who can blame him for lying in!). The hotel's great, everyones really friendly ... read more

Well we have made it to India. The last 24hrs have been a bit of an epic but now we are here it was all worth it. In the end flying with the bikes proved to be effortless except for the bit when we had to put them through the X-ray machine at the airport - we still don’t know how we managed to get them through but we did. When we finally checked in someone came out and took the bikes away and we didn’t see them again until we arrived in India. They didn’t even weigh them - thank god. We were told that they would rap them up in cling film before they loaded them onto the aircraft but in the end they didn’t. I can’t see any damage but later today I’m ... read more

Well... what a week, I could probably keep writing about everything for ages but I think Ill cut it short because Im going for my last day in the hospital in a minute. So had a pretty good week around Ananthupuri (the hospital) seen a lot... yesterday I saw a cesarean, it was the best operation Ive seen, had a tear come to my eyes! Bless! By working in Ananthupuri I have seen the difference between the rich and the poor. Ananthurprui is a private hospital run by some quite renowned medicals, so the conditions inside the hospital have been incredible, whereas in Cambodia and the general hospitals around India the care has been very basic and unhygenic. Its really hard to explain but if they can afford it they should get it. The rich people ... read more

Well, I have managed to actually settle down for a few days! I am having a really good time though. The hospital work has been pretty good, get into surgery every afternoon and tend to work in a department in the morning. Some of the aspects are really interesting. I have also done my first session of yoga!!!! Hahaha which was basically stretch and relax and I was so knackered after working all day it was needed, Went out for Wills birthday into Kovalam last night but we couldn't find a rickshaw to take us home, so we had to ring the person in charge of us but he didn't really seem to mind too much, this weekend we are all off to Kochi which is suppose to be a really pretty town jsut up north ... read more

Well... after a 1 hour flight, followed by a 15 hour wait, further followed by a 3 hour flight and then a 5 hour wait... then a 15 hour bus ride, I am at Trivandrum!!! Absolutely knackered and totally bewildered! Its been a loooonnnng way but hopefully it willl be worth it. The train was an experience of a life time, Im not even joking, health and safety would be having a field day, if you went to the toilet you would be excriting on to the track, beds.. well had to be shared and ahhhh! but Im glad to be here, everyone seems really friendly and everything, I want to catch a flight between here and Chennai though. South India looks to be amazing though, its so green and fertile and it looks like it ... read more

I'm walking a land named Tamil Nadu, with lots of things to see and do. Where people are friendly and people are nice, the farmers till paddy's, the merchants sell spice! As days go by, I sigh and I cry, it's time for a tale, let's give it a try! A tale about mountains and city's and beaches, and legends of Kings as history teaches. W'thout further a do, I give you this tale, this tale that is true, 'bout Tamil Nadu! I came to a city called Madurai, and saw a big temple, a temple say I! I went in this temple, I went to it's shrine, and offered a blessing, a blessing of mine. Within the temple, the incense burns, as faithful pilgrim churns and turns. An off'ring here, a blessing there, to Gods ... read more

Five excruciating hours after our departure from Kollam, we arrived in the Kerelan capital of Thirvundrum. At this point, the series of overcrowded, non A/C public buses ridden over the past few days were taking a serious toll on us and we were all a bit edgy. We searched around for our connecting bus to Kanyakumari, and, received conflicting information regarding the time of departure and platform number. We waited around until the first time we were told passed, then, decided to change plans last minute and catch the A/C train up to Chennai. Unfortunately for us, our long, tiring day was not finished as the joys of good ‘ol fashion convoluted Indian process were about to begin. Now, the following details may not be the most exciting read, however, they provide a good summary on ... read more
