Here we are at the start of week 2 and I feel like I have been here for so much longer! This weekend we stayed at Vivekanandapuram the Headquarter of the Spiritually Oriented Service Mission in Kanyakumari. I was eager to do some meditation and yoga. Kanyakumar is an attraction for people all over because it where the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal, and Indian ocean all merge together. We watched the sunset the first night. It was like being in a movie looking out at the city on the ocean. Then we went to the Kanyakumari temple. Kanyakumari means virgin goddess and this temple is dedicated to her. The archtitecture was beautiful and the temple had a rich history. The next morning I woke up at 5am to watch the sunrise. Professor Nair said some ... read more

So far, on our trip we've met some amazing people whose love and personal sacrifice for the gospel has been inspiring. Their level of struggle and persecution is far beyond anything I could've imagined.....this happens prior to baptism. Therefore, after baptism their foundation is much stronger than someone who hasn't experienced the same level of intense persecution. A special thank you to Christy & Lucy for their hospitality and servitude, Suma, this sister went straight to work after the Singles Devo and after working the midnight shift joined us the following morning for volleyball and fellowship. G2; this brother has taken off three days of work to chaffeur us around the town while playing Chad Talo's, Foundation CD, lol! Tim, Collin, Chris and Chad for their love and leadership. Love, Tanisha : )... read more

Yesterday we went to the "Silicon Valley" of Kerala. It was called TechnoPark. It was corporate like. We met with the CEO Mr. Mervin Alexander and we all sat around a big fancy round table with mini flags from all around the world. To say the least, I felt very important. We watched a powerpoint with different statistics about TechnoPark. It was interesting but for me somewhat hard to understand because I'm not very good with business. Next we went to a company called the Software Incubator. They greeted us formally with a flower and paste for a bindi. The social ambiance and hospitality of everyone we have met makes me feel so welcome and not like a stranger at all. There we watched a number of performances done by the workers including a mime performance, ... read more

So internet can be flaky here. In the morning it always works but at night sometimes the electricity goes out and then the wi-fi can be very slow and frustrating so that's why I haven't been able to keep up this blog as much as I would like. Yesterday we met with Reverend George Thenadikulam, an anthropologist who specializes in studying folklore of tribes here in Kerala. We learned a tribal song and dance! After lunch we went to an art museum with pieces of art as old as A.D 1. Many buddha statues as well as other gods and goddesses. Also there were some instruments and pieces of money from ancient times. Next we went to the zoo and saw lion-tailed monkeys, zebras, different kinds of deer, king cobra snakes, a jaguar, tigers, hippos, rhinos, and ... read more

Kerala - Trivandrum 23/02/11 - 24/02/11 After our original train got cancelled we managed to get on the next scheduled train from Varkala after much deliberation and a remittance stamp from the railway staff. They were actually really helpful, which must be a southern Indian railway thing! Anyway we were picked up by the owner of our Homestay and as we arrived at night we just settled in at our cottage. We stayed at Lake Woods Retreat Homestay run by a very accommodating chap called John (for 300Rs). It is about 7km from the city centre which takes about 20-30 minutes driving. It was 1200Rs for a standard room and 1500Rs for a superior. The rooms are separate from the owners house, next to each other (like semi detached chalets) which look out onto a ... read more

Travel Period: 2 Jan 2010 to 13 Jan 2010 India, the 2nd most populous country and more than a 100 languages spoken. My only knowledge of India is through movies or stories heard from my friends. I never thought that i will travel to India but i did. This trip included my mum and my sis. It was the first time for the 3 of us. 2 & 3 Jan 2010 We reached Trivandrum at about 8pm. When we stepped out of the airport, it was dark. The only lights were from the airport. We located our driver who drove us through the dark streets with only the headlight guiding him. Occasionally, we got a glimpse of some locals walking in the dark. Those who have been to India knows how the drivers are with the ... read more

Well we've made it all the way to the very Southern tip of India now and have begun the early stages of our long leg back up the West coat. We enjoyed Tamil Nadu with it's rickety buses, huge temples and the chance to get up Kodaikanal, a hill station with cool, clean air and a beautiful lake. It felt good to reach the bottom of India a full 1487 as the crow flies from Darjeeling, our most northerly point so far. The southern point is marked with a huge statue and memorial on two separate island and it was fun to go out on the ageing and rolling ferry where you could see 270 degrees of ocean. We've now crossed into Kerala where the scenery turned bright green the undergrowth is like the jungle book ... read more

After being at the ayurvedic clinic for 13 days I was so ready to see the beach, and shop. I went with a friend from the clinic. We had so much fun. The ride was about 40 minutes, the driver was so thrilled to point out temples to us along the way. There are temples everywhere here. Shiva, Lakshimi, Ganesh, Hanuman. Every morning about 5:15am I am serenaded by beautiful flute music coming through the fields behind my room. The music inspires a spark in me to start my day and off I go to practice yoga and pranayama with the other ladies up stairs. I was pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the beach, the feeling it gave me of tranquility and vitality. It was very clean. There were men doing like a tug of ... read more
