Asia » India March 20th 2011

India is a land of contradictions.  On one hand India can be a seriously frustrating place where the simplest task can become immensely stressful and just walking the streets can be exhausting. On the other hand it can be amazing to watch the different classes of people go on with their normal life in such crazy environments where nothing seems to faze them (except us of course). I've never seen so much (red/brown) saliva in one spit or so many people squat and pee on the train station platform to give just 2 examples but this is seen as completely normal in India. It is hilarious how many cows sit like they are completely at home when cars are swerving around them a little too close in the middle of busy roads. It was funny to ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Trivandrum March 20th 2011

Kerala - Trivandrum 23/02/11 - 24/02/11 After our original train got cancelled we managed to get on the next scheduled train from Varkala after much deliberation and a remittance stamp from the railway staff. They were actually really helpful, which must be a southern Indian railway thing! Anyway we were picked up by the owner of our Homestay and as we arrived at night we just settled in at our cottage. We stayed at Lake Woods Retreat Homestay run by a very accommodating chap called John (for 300Rs). It is about 7km from the city centre which takes about 20-30 minutes driving. It was 1200Rs for a standard room and 1500Rs for a superior. The rooms are separate from the owners house, next to each other (like semi detached chalets) which look out onto a ... read more

Kerala - Alleppey and the Backwaters 21/02/11 - 23/02/11 Well we have landed right back into India that's for sure! The ear splitting beeping and the dirty buses are back but the pavements have gone. Alleppey is a hectic, muggy and dusty town that is split into grids by small waterways which lead into the backwaters. To the east of the city is a quiet, pleasant beach which seems popular with locals and big sand crabs (digging holes by constantly shovelling the sand with one arm). Alleppey is known as 'The Gateway to the Backwaters' and why this place is on the tourist trail. You can discover the narrow backwaters by a canoe boat (motor or rowing) or the wider canals by houseboat or ferry. We wanted to do an overnight houseboat trip and didn't ... read more

Asia » India » Kerala » Varkala February 26th 2011

Kerala - Varkala 18/02/11 - 21/02/11 We arrived at about 6pm and got a tuk tuk to the North cliff (about 2km) for 60Rs! The tuk tuk drivers here want to take you to hotels that give them commission so it should be made clear which hotel you want to go to and that you have paid. The tuk tuk back to the station cost 70Rs and they did not budge! They didn't seem bothered about negotiating (5 of them were in on it) just saying we would have to walk if we didn't accept it! The reason they gave for why it was cheaper from the station was that the drivers get commission that way. We think that it's more to do with how touristy the place is and some tourists will pay anything!! ... read more

Asia » India » Goa » Palolem February 19th 2011

Goa - Palolem Beach 14/02/11 - 17/02/11 The beach!! Our flight from Mumbai was delayed for about 4 hours so we arrived late at Dabolim domestic airport. We had arranged for a taxi to pick us up (had to wait poor thing) and cost 1200Rs for the hour and a half long journey down to Palolem (nearest train station Cancona). We arrived at night and had booked (in advance) into the colourful Cuba Palolem Beach bungalows. A bungalow with a hot water guiser is 1750Rs, 1500 without. The Cuba company has bungalows on nearby Agonda and Patnem beaches also. The bungalows look great from the outside, set back on the beach in a semi - circle. They are painted all different pastel colours and have a really nice verandah to relax within. Inside they are ... read more

Asia » India » Maharashtra » Mumbai February 19th 2011

Mumbai 12/02/11 - 14/02/11 We arrived in Mumbai Bandra Train Station at about midday and got a taxi into the city for 400Rs after much negotiation.  We checked into the Residency Hotel (booked in advance) in The Fort area after much confusion over why we did not appear on the check-in list! We protested to get into a room only to be telephoned later to be told that we had booked for March instead!! Well, I had booked for March! The third of my (iPhone) booking catastrophes!! Oh well they let us stay, apparently having to turn someone away (not sure about that) and managed to fit us in for the next night also. We found it difficult to book accommodation in Mumbai prior to arriving there. Many good value places were full or they ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jaisalmer February 15th 2011

Jaisalmer 09/02/11 - 11/02/11 Our train took 5 and half hours and we were greeted from the door of our train by loads of touts offering transport to the city. Duncan unfortunately fell for the 20Rs low price scam on the platform. As we exited the station we saw a placard with our hotel name, but at that point we didn't believe it! The guy who took us to our hotel owned the hotel next door. He was pretty cool about it and gently tried to get us to see his hotel. When we explained we had already paid for Shahi Palace he informed us about his rooftop restaurant and his camel safari. He wasn't really that interested in the 20Rs we agreed with him for the ride! We met the driver from Shahi Palace ... read more

Asia » India » Rajasthan » Jodhpur February 15th 2011

Jodhpur 06/02/11 - 08/02/11 I love majestic Rajasthan! This place just seems more laid back, there is less hassle (in my opinion), the traffic is not quite as bad and the colours of the bazaars filled with bright fabrics  light up the narrow alleyways and alcoves. The women look fantastic in their brightly coloured beautiful saris in fantastic pinks, yellows and stunning reds. This is the best place to buy fabric products of good quality. I purchased a nice pashmina and some Hareem style pants from the minimal hassle shop next-door to MV Spices (which is in the LP). Duncs bought some bombay potato mix (after much hassle) which I'm unsure about getting through customs in Australia!! Asia » India » Uttar Pradesh » Agra February 15th 2011

Agra 05/02/11 - 06/02/11 We arrived after 3 hours by train in Agra (Cantt) and took a taxi (150Rs) to our hotel. In retrospect we should have taken an autorickshaw/tuktuk but we got caught by a persuasive dude. Haha he was very peeved on arrival to our hotel to find that we had already booked on hostelbookers as he thought he was in for some commission thus why he walked us in! We booked into Hotel Siddhartha in Taj Ganj (550Rs per night). Taj Ganj is basically the budget area but its hotels have the best views of the Taj Mahal from their rooftop terraces. The hotels /GHs around here are not exactly luxury but the midrange places are quite far away from the Taj. Our hotel was very basic, whitewashed Walls, no curtains, grubby ... read more

Asia » India » National Capital Territory » New Delhi February 15th 2011

Delhi 02/02/11 - 04/02/11 Delhi has a problem with it's organised traffic system. It is at times literally impossible to cross the road. At some 'crossings', ie there are zebra lines there are no traffic lights and a constant stream of 7 lanes of traffic! The roads are well maintained and there are pavements (for once) but I gave up trying to cross them, even with other people. You can see they have maintained the roads, especially around Connaught Place for the Commonwealth games. There are some suitably modern subways dotted around though if you can find them. We found it is also quite hard to get back to our accommodation as it was one side  of a fenced major road (a bit like a major A road in the UK). Which would mean it ... read more
