Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Hey Everyone, I just wanted to send you a link to some pictures that I finally got uploaded. These are only a few. And not the best (those will come when I get back). On Monday we will head to Bir for some Mahamudra teachings from Tai Situ Rinpoche. And tomorrow we will get to see His Holiness the Dalai Lama. This has been an amazing trip so far. I am eating well (for you mom), and am enjoying myself very much. I am also continuing my studyof Tibetan (language). I can read Tibetan now but I am concentrating on speaking. [View Full Entry]

Kantaminen on taalla kunniassa! Tavaraa liikutellaan paljolti kantamalla ja aasit kuljett [View Full Entry]

Lama Pema Makes Good Momos Lama Pema is an extraordinary Tibetan Buddhist monk based in New York, constantly traveling, an artist, inventor, musician, linguist and teacher. Among his inventions: a complex of templates that can be constructed to form a chair one day, a bed the next, a house if you had enough of them; an artistic gravity defying stainless steel whirling prayer device; an architectural system for the balance of hot and cool air; and a Tibetan/Sanskrit based Braille system (the Buryig) that took him ten years to develop. Lama Pema is a pointman for questions on Tibet and Tibe [View Full Entry]

Eilen osallistuimme kynttilamielenosoitukseen tiibetilaisten mielipidevankien puolesta. Paljonhan talla alueella tietty esiintyy propagandaa tiibetin puol [View Full Entry]

Onhan nama uudet kuvat laadultaan aika hamyisia verrattuna digikameralla otettuihin. Kiva kuitenkin, kun saa jotain kuvia muistoksi ja eivat nama korkeuserot kuitenkaan nayttaisi tasokkaallakaan kameralla juuri miltaan. Tama taytyy nahda omin silmin! Tama on juuri sellaista mai [View Full Entry]

Hey Everyone, Its nice to be able to write another post again. We left Varanassi the afternoon of the 7th. We took an overnight train (2AC) from Varanassi to Chakki Bank. We arrived around 10am. We then got a taxi to Mcleod Ganj (Dharamsala). We arrived around 1pm on the 8th in Dharamsala. As some of you know, the 8th was my birthday. I had a great birthday. When we came in it was a bit rainy and cold. But I LOVE the cold. It is such a massive difference from Sarnath. In Sarnath it was around 41 degrees celsius. But [View Full Entry]

27-29 March. After a brutal, 6+ hour ride over hilly and twisty roads on a local bus without leg room even for me, we reached Dharamsala, home of thousands of refugees from Tibet and especially the Dalai Lama, who fled the Communist Chinese government in March 1959. India has allowed the Dalai Lama to set up a government in exile here and has supported his efforts to win freedom for Tibet for the past 50 years. You might remember that the freedom of Tibet was an issue as China prepared for the 2008 Olympics and ran the torch through Europe and [View Full Entry]

Tibetan Protest

You would never believe India could be as cold as it is now!! We are sitting here writing this in extreme climates in the mountains of the Himilayas. After a hair raising train ride from Delhi to Shimla perched on the edges of the mountain tops, we rocked up in our flip flops and thin clothes thinking "We're in India how cold could it be!!" We spent our first few nights in the indian YMCA with no heating and dodgy showers freezing our arses off!!! Shimla itself is a little resort that almost looked like we were in a seaside resort [View Full Entry]

Life in McLeod Ganj March 26th-April___ I’ve been in McLeod Ganj since March 26th. Originally I planned to chill out here and do some volunteering until some of the treks I wanted to do in Uttarakhand opened up. McLeod Ganj is near Dharamsala, in Himachal Pradesh. It is the location of the Tibetan government in exile and the site of His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s residence. A large percentage of the town is Tibetan. There are also lots of foreigners hanging out here volunteering, or teaching or taking yoga, massage, or reiki courses. It’s a beautiful mountain setting and th [View Full Entry]

Looking out over McLeod Ganj
Snow!
A rare quiet moment in McLeod

30-31 March. Today, we drove to Dalhousie, another beautiful hill town named by a British military commander who wanted a place to go when it was too hot in Delhi and too crowded in Simla. The road was beautiful, with rivers and the Himalayas on the right (north) side. It’s sometimes hard to see out the bus windows because of the hair oil smeared on them. Most folks use mustard seed or other oil on their hair, and it seems to pay off for the women, who have beautiful, long silken hair. You rarely see a woman with a short haircut. [View Full Entry]
