This was one of those random treks which just happened thanks to SpiceJet :) One day few of us noticed that SpiceJet was offering pretty good discounts on flight tickets to Delhi. We just booked it during the Republic Day weekend as we would be getting 3 days of holidays together. Apart from Vivek and Aayush (my usual trek partners), Yash decided to join this time. The plan initially was to go to Vaishno Devi when Aayush suggested this trek of 2 days duration. We anyway had Roopkund on our radar for the year and thought this would be a great as a mini Roopkund-ish trek. So it was decided that we shall conquer Prashar and in the process test our trekking skills in a cold climate. We reached Delhi one day early and roamed around ... read more

So I have now been in India for just less than a week and I can honestly say that I’ve seen the most weird and wonderful things. My flight over to India was very long and tiring, and it wasn’t until my seven hour drive from Chandigarh airport to Palampur, that I realised just how far I am away from everything! We were driving for two hours through the mountains, and after having less than an hour sleep within 24 hours, my first experience of Indian roads was an interesting one. But it was exciting nonetheless, my senses were in full overdrive as we were driving to Palampur, the place where I am now living for the next five months. And wow is it a beautiful place to be living! When I woke up in the ... read more

I think I can officially call myself a traveler. Not only because “tourist” sounds like I am 80 years old, follow a guide with a flag and carry an unnecessarily large, overpriced camera over my chest. But because this is my 10thyear living out of a backpack, with no more assets in one part of the world than any other and no clear region to call home. At the moment I have clothes in bags in Italy, India and possibly Vancouver…although I can’t even remember…nevermind the endless piles of sweatshirts from my teenage years in Montreal. Why are sweatshirts so hard to throw away? Now, in my 6th winter in India, I am becoming less of a traveler and more of a fixture in my few favorite places. I move around so little these days (it’s ... read more

Shoja, Inner Seraj Valley, Kullu District, Himachal Pradesh May 15, 2015 “....the path ...... must eventually be abandoned, just as you abandon a boat when you reach the other shore. You must disembark once you have arrived. At the point of total realisation, you must abandon . The spiritual path is a temporary solution, a placebo to be used until emptiness is understood.” Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse The plan mooted a week ahead was to trek up to the nearby mountain sacred site of Skiran with a friend (Ved) to witness the huge local religious ceremony held there in May each year. This particular ceremonial festival is where the Shringi Rishi god statue is carried to Skiran (where there is a small wooden Shringi Rishi temple) from his usual temple abode below Chehni (four hours by foot) ... read more

My last blog got quite long and frankly, I lost interest in continuing it…possibly why I would make a horrible author. I would most likely publish the book half written! So I will clarify now, that the reason I was able to write that blog was because all these months later, I could access the sadness and pain I felt over the last year with detachment. I no longer feel sad about those events. But I also want to remember and learn from them. It is new for me to acknowledge my feelings and I am working hard at seeing them honestly and letting them go…I haven’t quite figured out how to do that yet, but I hope before my next life to at least make some progress! So that was my intention with my last ... read more

The Himalayan Foothills. Oft spoke about as a sort of spiritual mecca, as if this land, this place, this range of magnificent rock formation emanates a certain vibration. Perhaps it does. I am not to dispel such theories if they exist. Only that, one's soul is omnipresent and that vastness of space is with us wherever we may go. Including this journey to the Himalayas, a journey that took me over 2,000 kilometres, across six states and via seven modes of transport. Took us, I should say; for my co-author and I both decided to leave the distracting circumstances of the world aside for five days and focus. The book, the novel, is always our point of focus but here in Himachal, we wanted to soak ourselves in its mystery, its magic and let the story ... read more

Free food and tea was supplied constantly on the morning train from Delhi to Kalka, which was most welcome! From Kalka we took the famous Toy Train up towards Shimla. The train was very busy. Our carriage had an extended family travelling, with very excited children who enjoyed screaming every time we went through a tunnel. Passengers jumped off at small stations along the way to buy teas and snacks, as there was no onboard buffet. The train stopped in its tracks for about an hour at one point, so arrived late. We were lucky that our airbnb host found out about the delay, and still managed to pick us up from the nearest station, and bring us to his place in Shogi (which is a village a little further down the route from Shimla). The ... read more

Its what I expected....plus 1000%! It all began with Air Asia's brand new Boeing 787 Dreamliner gliding into Delhi Int'l carrying a 'happy bean'. Great food, unlimited (alcoholic) drinks, Hollywood and X Box's best, and personal service airliners offered 40 years ago. Then...you land! Airport...? Easy! No queueing for tourists, just the odd security question "Who is your Prime Minister by the way?". Then you are out. The ATM flatly refused me, but after automated texts from the bank I am holding 1,000's of rupees worth very little. Despite Colin's clear instructions not to surrender to the porters I gave in after a 40 yard 'simul-dash' with them and my luggage trolley. When I embarrisingly explain I have NO small change, he tells me sterling is fine and I say goodbye to Gbp1. The safest form ... read more
