Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

These 3 things have in common that we experienced each one in the last couple of days. In Shimla we took an easy time. Partly because we had to acclimatize to the slow pace and more laid back attitude, opposed to the chaos in Delhi. For activities, we conducted a few short hikes and indulged ourselves in the national cuisine. Often with unexpected results, some good, some bad. Sadly Ilse was often disappointed by Indian persistence to put gluten in her meals, which more than often resulted in me heroically taking on 2 dishes at once. Last Saturday we took a [View Full Entry]

Well, the date has finally been nailed down. On October 28, 2011 the world as we know it comes to an end. I guess I should not say 'finally', as the Mayan people calculated this date as 'the end' thousands of years ago. All this is according to a long haired, slightly bearded Slovenian guy staying at my friends guesthouse. Ulosh was a bit of an extreme hobbyist, and the other day he gave a casual two hour presentation on the 'potential end of the world topic' to me and a handful of other travelers, as he smoked hand-rolled cigarettes. A [View Full Entry]

Chamba is a fascinating town set in a valley on the edge of a rushing river. It took one hour on the bus to get here from Khajjiar and it was a scary trip! The bus arrived from Dalhousie absolutely packed and had about a dozen young men sitting on the roof - all singing and whistling - in very high spirits and looking forward to day out on the field in Khajjiar. Just as we were leaving Khajjiar, as were walking through the forest to the bus stop (our hotel was set amongst the trees) we disturbed two baby snow [View Full Entry]

After 4 days in New Delhi of which one spend mostly in Agra we traveled on to Shimla. Looking forward towards the scenic trip on a toy train through the mountains, it ended as a bit of a hellish ride for myself. What caused it all was probably the meal we received on our train ride from Agra back to Delhi the day before. The result was that my stomach disagreed with everything I tried to put into it the day after. Couple this with a 5, 5 hour long economy train ride from Delhi to Kalka and you know I [View Full Entry]

Amritsar has been the highlight of our trip so far but sadly it was time to leave this fascinating city. Our next stop was Dalhousie, another hill station in the foothills of the Lower Himalayan Mountains. There was a train part of the way and then a local bus up the mountain (in total it takes 6 hours to reach Dalhousie from Amritsar) or local bus all the way. Being a pilgrim city it became nearly impossible to get a ticket out - the whole situation wasn't helped of course by it being school holidays in Punjab! In the end after [View Full Entry]

Namaste! (Hello in Hindi) We've arrived in Manali, after a 14hr bus ride -which wasn't as bad as it might sound hehe. The scenery here is amazing! Manali is such a colourful little town, located within the moutains. The air is a lot fresher here too. Since we've arrived, we've been going shopping, practising our haggling skills, practicing our Hindi and Nepali (our hotel staff is all Nepali), drinking Chai, trying to plan our route (which keeps changing hehe), and trying out different curries. The thali dishes are really nice. So, we're relaxing, before our trek in the mountains. Been in [View Full Entry]

If you go asking people to name something that makes them instantly connect to the childhood memories, chances are that the cycle would probably feature prominently in that list. The romance of the cycle is undying. Yes we love our fuel guzzling sedans and motorbikes, but the cycle tugs the strings of the heart as it reminds us of the sunny days of our childhood and passage to adulthood. For me, I remember my daily 5 km ride to my school from home, the long aimless rides with friends in winter afternoons, wading through knee deep waterlogged streets on my cycle [View Full Entry]

Hmmm travel blog travel blog what to write! Well, so. I left Delhi! Earlier than planed I know, but then again if I had planned a bit better I wouldn't rock up there in the hottest season. It was too much for me to bare. To hot to do much. Couldn't really explore because it was far to uncomfortable to be outside. So it meant I was working in the air conditioned rooms or sitting under a fan somewhere else. Any outside activities where greatly avoided. So, some what depressive really. Amelie and I decided to finish all our on going [View Full Entry]

Hello those of you still finding time to track my endless movements! I am writing to you from the home of the Dalai Lama...Dharamsala up in the picturesque mountains! I have covered quite a lot of ground since my last entry which has meant some serious train journies. Being in confined spaces has induced some interesting and amusing situations largely due to our train delirum, or as we like to say...going "insane in the train brain!". Sally and i have now managed to tally up 15 train journies! Most of which we have treated ourselves to the luxury of 3rd AC(carriages [View Full Entry]

It was that time of the year again when a young (I mean I am only 27) guy engulfed in his mundane corporate life thought of taking a vacation… yet again, fully aware of the economic paranoia surrounding the capital markets and job equations across the globe. Conventional wisdom was not in approval of any exercise that would lead to splurging money on frivolous pursuits but the human will of triumphing over the odds was overwhelming this time. I had my boss’s blessing (approved leaves) and weather gods were backing as well, though spare a thought for the global warming cause&hellip [View Full Entry]
