Background: The Indus Valley civilization, one of the oldest in the world, dates back at least 5,000 years. Aryan tribes from the northwest invaded about 1500 B.C.; their merger with the earlier Dravidian inhabitants created the classical Indian culture. Arab incursions starting in the 8th century and Turkish in the 12th were followed by those of European traders, beginning in the late 15th century. By the 19th century, Britain had assumed political control of virtually all Indian lands. Indian armed forces in the British army played a vital role in both World Wars. Nonviolent resistance to British colonialism led by Mohandas GANDHI and Jawaharlal NEHRU brought independence in 1947. The subcontinent was divided into the secular state of India and the smaller Muslim state of Pakistan. A third war between the two countries in 1971 resulted in East Pakistan becoming the separate nation of Bangladesh. Despite impressive gains in economic investment and output, India faces pressing problems such as the ongoing dispute with Pakistan over Kashmir, massive overpopulation, environmental degradation, extensive poverty, and ethnic and religious strife.

Easy Rider!! Asia » India » Goa » Arambol
So while Alicia was going through 10 hours of pain i thought i would hire a scooter and go for a leisurely ride around a few different beaches and just generally explore whats around us. Indian roads are definately not for the faint hearted, especially in the large cities, but out here in north Goa its pretty relaxed by indian terms. That doesnt mean to say that there are not loads of potholes to navigate or cows, chickens, dogs and cats that suddenly run into the road to dodge and crazy indian drivers beeping there horns, overtaking on the wrong side [View Full Entry]

Arambol - Goa Asia » India » Goa » Arambol
Monday, Oct 26th - Arambol, Goa So, today we left Anjuna to go to Arambol. The weekend was fine. We didn’t end up partying at all, but we met really nice people and hung out at the Shore Bar a lot. I finished ‘eat, pray, love’ yesterday and actually got a parcel send out today to hopefully be in Melbourne before I am. Sending a parcel in India usually includes spending 2-3 hours at the post office (not exaggerating here!). But siunce the post office in Anjuna is tiny, it only took me 20 minutes. Like everything in India, sending a [View Full Entry]

After spending 3 days in Mumbai, we get up really early to catch the 06.55 Mandovi Express to Goa. We get to the main CST train station at rush hour (manic!) to find our train is delayed by 5 hours! Rubbish! After wandering around for a bit trying to find an open cafe to sit and wait in (there was none!) we end up at the station food kiosk and were taken in by the lovely employees who let us sit and eat in the cool and calm of their office rather than in the crazy station (nice!). We then sit [View Full Entry]

Hello everyone! So rather a lot of time has passed once again since my last entry! I'm not very good at this keeping in touch thing especially as now i am on the move....or stuck to a sunbed in goa! So i guess i should rewind and recap our last month at Happy Days and then move on to my current whereabouts! So our last month at Happy Days consisted of singing, dancing, painting, packing and preparing to say goodbye :( We celebrated our three month anniversary and went to see our first Bollywood movie, which unfortunately was a bit crap [View Full Entry]

After Chrissie's few days of sickness and the accompanying requirement to stay in the hotel room, it felt fantastic to get to Goa, with its beaches and wide open spaces. We spent 8 days in Goa, but for 6 of these we, to all intents and purposes, did exactly the same thing - relaxed at the beach. India is so hot, busy and hectic, that it was wonderful to get to a couple of beach resorts and just kick back for a while. We visited two villages, called Anjuna and Arambol, the former for 2 days and the latter for 4. [View Full Entry]

Party time - North Goa Asia » India » Goa » Arambol
We arrive at Arambol beach and find the cheapest decent hut again. It's way down the end of the beach but its nice and should be quiet during the day. I'm really hoping to find a big parties here; Goa trance scene coem on!! Scooters are definitly the way to get around here. They are cheap and give so much freedom. The only thing is there are no helmets and apparently no road rules in India. Generally Might is right, so watch out for bigger vehicles and go around with you thumb on the horn to alert anyone who doesn't see [View Full Entry]

Hippies, Tigers and Beaches Asia » India » Goa » Arambol
So. First of all, there was Holiii! on Tuesday and Wednesday. The colour festival. It was so much fun. All of the volunteers and the staff gathered together in camp and threw paint at each other. A very surreal but memorable experience. I guess it's difficult to express how good it was because it just sounds like we were making each other dirty but it was really very fun. The staff, who are usually fairly reserved, suddenly turned into small children - climbing on roofs and rubbing paint in our faces. And our camp manager, Vishal, broke it down on the [View Full Entry]

Ah so much to tell - where to start? Imbolc found me ready to break out of the Pune cocoon and ma'am began her journey coastwards with fellow mystic rose Sandrine on an overnight bus to Goa. Arambol in a nutshell: YOGA, countless opportunities to stay in the middle until in the relentless heckling on the main drag or the inevitable haggling process when attempting a purchase, unending streams of the fab and fagalicious gliding by on their motorbikes svelte and helmetless, boho threads on their bronzed bods, the constant sound of the sewing machine going at it hell for leather, [View Full Entry]
