We have left Tibet and returned to mainland China (Cheng Du) for a night. We did some touring with our local guide (she was a local Spicy Girl!), saw a show at a tea house (Pat has had enough Chinese opera to last a lifetime). The shadow puppets, slick puppets and changing faces acts were great. Before leaving, we had a wonderful visit to the Giant Panda Preserve. It was a wonderful park setting with nearly 100 pandas. We saw them everywhere - very active since it was feeding time. We also saw the young one that is the mascot for the 2008 Olympics. It was an exciting stop! Now we are in Hong Kong. What a change! First of all it is tropical here - hot and humid. Good thing our wardrobe is versatile! Last ... read more

Paul - After yesterday's cultural adventure we decided that before we left Hong Kong we needed to have Dim Sum. So for breakfast this morning we set out to have this famous Cantonese "buffet". Managed to find what must have been the busiest place in town. Massive queues outside but when we went to enquire how long it would be, we were taken straight to a table. I think she obviously mistook me for David Beckham. Or some other blonde haired celebrity. Brad Pitt maybe? Who can tell! We weren't sure how many dishes to order so we settled on six. The waiter didn't look at us funny either when we ordered so we thought we were on the right track. Then came the food and it was delicious. Loads of little snacky foods all freshly ... read more

Paul - Hey look, I'm telling you don't read on. Seriously. Nothing happened of interest at all. You may as well go watch tv or read a book. Or go cook tea for your mum (that's you Mike if you're at home) or do something else productive. You still reading? You actually want to know what we did? ok... Well we got up nice and early to go across to Hong Kong island to the Vietnamese embassy. Got our visa's no problem and went to Virgin Atlantic's office to change our flight details! Is this exciting or what!?! Wanted to change our flights to Saturday but couldn't so changed them to Sunday instead! After all that excitement we needed a drink so popped into a shop for some water. Laura decided to go crazy and get ... read more

Today was my second and last day in Hong Kong. Last night after I wrote I wandered down to the harbour to see the city lights at night. It was very beautiful because there was still a thick cloud of heat haze resting across the bay and it made all the city lights blurry. The sky scapers looked less bold, even a little bit fragile, quivering in the hot, hot heat. This morning I caught the Star Ferry from Kowloon across the harbour into Hong Kong Central. It is a gobsmackingly beautiful city. Clean, immaculately groomed and filthy, filthy rich. I did all the touristy things while I was there, mostly because I couldnt think of anything else to do. First I caught the infamous Peak Tram to the top of Victoria Peak. I was told ... read more

Day 5 ~ HK Ocean Park For close to 30 years, Ocean Park has been a premier household name in HK and one of the “must see” places for visitors. I’m happy we had the luxury to spend a full day at the Park. The park is bigger than Disneyland and my friend who went in March advised me to be there early else I may not have the time to explore the whole place when the gates come down at 6pm. We were indeed very early. By 9.40am - we had already reached the Park Entrance. Coach buses carrying tourists from mainly Mainland were earlier than us. There was no push or rush as everybody queued up in an orderly fashion. The cable car brought us to the highlands where all the thrill rides were. ... read more

So ... maybe daily updates was an over-ambitious target. Here's a quick update on the last few days. Wednesday I got a fairly late start, heading out to Central HK just before lunch. The concierge suggested I dine in Soho ("SOuth of HOllywood Road"), which is renowned for it's trendy cafes. Getting there entailed a one-block walk to the MTR (Honk Kong's "tube"), then a one-stop ride, and then a one-mile outdoor escalator ride up toward Hong Kong's Mid-levels. (On a side note, this was my "day off" from my healthy eating kick, so I stopped at a little bakery for a yummy custard-filled cupcake thing, and also at McDonald's for a double cheeseburger ... yes, all this on my WAY to lunch ... lol. Anyway, it was fun to see the differences in Mickey D's ... read more

Hi Folks, Hope you are all ok - sorry to bore you all but we thought it was time for another Blog. Since the last Blog the weather has turned to bright sunny skies but the humidity has gone up too so it’s taking it out of us; with the walking we’ve been doing in this heat we should be 2 stones lighter when we get back home. Saturday night we decided to head up to Soho and Lan Kwai Fong for a bit of action, it’s quite expensive for drinks in HK (£4 small beer), so we went out early to catch the Happy Hours that go on ‘til about 9pm…….well lets put it this way, I was VERY HAPPY!!! I don’t know if it was the beer, the wine or the tequila shots but ... read more

Got up late and went to eat wonton noodle soup...Felicia’s favorite. Had some coffee for extra energy and then we took the bus to Stanley. It was a nice ride to the south side of Hong Kong Island—windy roads through the hills with really scenic views of the island. Walked around Stanley market and had a beverage on Stanley Main Road on the waterfront. The weather was perfect and there were families out enjoying their Sunday afternoon, as well as dragon boat crews unwinding after practice. Took the bus back to the north side of the island, went to a mall, and then had dinner at East End Brewery. Apparently Formula One racing is very popular in HK and car races were on TV all over the place. Took a taxi back to Happy Valley and ... read more

Today we started off the day with a walk towards Kowloon Park. On the way the Gabrielle bought herself a new camera from Woo Ping - he seemed like an honest fellow. Also, Grandpa bought himself a new Ipod. Woo Ping did very well out of us. The walk through Kowloon Park was pleasant - a nice little oasis in such a busy city - although all the bird flu warning signs were a bit disturbing. We ended up at the international ferry terminal for lunch which is nearby. Later, we caught the ferry to Hong Kong Island (only $2.20HKD) and then boarded the bus to take us to Stanley where some markets are. The bus trip was a fun one, winding through the hills in a double decker bus, very interesting. Got to go past ... read more

He smiles at me and we nod. He seems to be a really nice cool guy but I can only continue to wait. A lot of kids go by talking to each other in Cantonese "Hello!" they call. Not to me this time but to the receptionist. A woman comes in and sits near me. She also smiles and waves but I continue to wait. Wishing I could speak to them. A woman walks in with her child, talking with her hands to the other two who waved at me. They sit down and soon after the child points at me and laughs. He comes to give me the information I asked for. I ask him some questions including if I could possibly get a job there. "Usually we ask the people we hire to be ... read more
