Got up, walked down the hill to Wong Tai Sin and left Goo-poh at the dim sum restaurant. Took the bus to go see Sam (Goo-poh’s oldest son) and wife Joanne’s newly renovated apartment. We all took the bus back to the dim sum place and had lunch with everyone that we had dinner with the night before. Rode the subway (MTR) over to Hong Kong Island and got off at Causeway Bay. Had iced Chinese tea (nai cha) down a little alley near Times Square and then got the tram to Happy Valley to meet up with Kazumi (Todd’s high school friend from Mexico). Kazumi’s apartment was really nice with a million dollar view of the Happy Valley Racecourse (horses). Rode the tram into Soho (South of Hollywood) and had lunch at Life Organic Health ... read more

We’ve moved from our plush Harbour View suite in Kowloon over to Hong Kong Island, we’re staying at the Express Holiday Inn (£63 per night with breakfast thrown in for free). The hotel is in Causeway Bay and is in a great location for everything. There are hundreds of restaurants, bars and shopping malls’ surrounding the hotel and the whole place feels a lot less touristy to us - which we prefer! We had our first trip on the Star Ferry from Kowloon to HK Island, it only takes about 7 mins and even with bags and backpacks it was a very smooth journey, the transport systems here are fantastic; everything is well signposted and really cheap too. I think we’ve overdone the shopping now, even I’m getting bored of it, there are millions and millions ... read more

After just over a month at home, a period of time which encompassed an incompetent attempt by H&R Block to complete my US tax return by the IRS deadline, it was time to head into terra nova again, this time bearing the proud battle scars of my Indian campaign rather than the clueless expression that had accompanied me to New Delhi back in November. The planning for my intended destination - Australia - was done in a different fashion to that initial trip. Firstly, my luggage was a subset of my Indian packing - no mosquito net, or doxycycline, or water purification tablets needed, for example, so little thought was required on that score. Secondly, I'd decided that detailed route planning was completely pointless, so simply having a vague idea what I wanted to see would ... read more

We've been here in balmy, vibrant, expensive Hong Kong for 3 days now and have packed in the usual sites and culinary delights! Yesterday we enjoyed a lovely refreshing beer at the top of Victoria Peak - which was well deserved after the scary tram ride we experienced getting to the top! The views of HK central and surrounding areas were amazing. We got a few pictures but unfortunately we can't download them at the mo. We've been shopping along the Golden Mile and it's pretty spectacular - shame we can't buy anything as our ruck sacks are already jam packed! Tomorrow we're taking a ferry trip to the big buddha on the surrounding island of Lantau. Apparently it's the worlds tallest buddha and weighs as much as a jumbo jet. We haven't had any big ... read more

I can’t believe I’m on the last leg of my journey! I arrived in Hong Kong yesterday morning, and bravely (or probably brazenly) attempted to break into the time difference after a 12 hour flight and 7 hour difference. My cunning plan didn’t really work, as I spent most of the day nodding off in random places - the bus, the train, at a BBQ…. Having said that I’ve had a great time in Hong Kong so far! I think that having one of your best mates as a tour guide also makes such a difference. After lugging over 30 kgs of luggage up too many steps we set off to Stanley Markets for some thorough investigation. Here I learned the art of bargaining with Hong Kong traders. Yeah right! It was more like I kept ... read more

I’m back to reality (if you can call Doha reality!) and I survived the whirlwind weekend full of 17 hours of flying, umpteen hours of shopping, and very few hours of sleeping. What can I say about Hong Kong? Well, for one, it’s a huge departure from the city I’ve been living in for the past few months (which makes even Edmonton look like a thriving metropolis!). The city is very large and very compact. I obviously wasn’t surprised by this; however, a couple of things did surprise me. The good: 1) The lushness—maybe it’s just because I haven’t seen trees or grass in so long, but the city is so green! Actually, we all noticed how similar it is to Vancouver in that respect, so it’s not at all surprising that Van is the city ... read more

Sorry, still no way to post pictures. I love Hong Kong so far, if I ever stumble on to a reason to live here for a year or so, I'm taking it. But I will have to cut down on the dumpling eating. It is just so tempting as you are walking around and there are so many kinds to try. It is like I am having a walking dim sum tour instead of going to restaurant and staying in one place for it. Last night's hotel was much better and it had a purple TV. Good thing I am not a TV watcher, the only English channel was sports. I think one of the most interesting parts of Hong Kong so far is the contrast in buildings. Especially in the area on the east side ... read more

I took the Star Ferry from Kowloon to Hong Kong this morning. This ten minute ride costs 2.20 HK dollars, which is about 30 cents US...such a deal. Had some dim sum along the harbor and went back to the hotel for a nap. I do not travel well, very jet lagged.... read more

Mll wanted to tell this story but since I have the time I will. Last night was the annual MEYER dinner to celebrate a good year for the company. Now remember, I've never met all the people Mitchell works with here in Hong Kong. There were 38 of us at this dinner. Very Chinese styled dinner...jellyfish, tofu, pork, shark fin soup, lots of other "mystery" food. Needless to say, I was eating a light dinner, drinking wine and I am very jet lagged. The room is small and hot and people are smoking. (Hey Bill & Caroline do you see where this story is going??) ML & I get up to chat to some people on the other side of the room. Suddenly I don't feel very well and I know if I don't sit down, ... read more
