Well Evan and I have had a marathon 3 days...we tried to fit all of the highlights and some major shopping in before we have to leave tomorrow. The highlight is our new collection of knock-offs--Evan got a $25,000 Franck Muller watch for $30 which looks very nice, but it doesn't tick consistantly...it keeps good time when it is running, but has stopped on a few occasions. Oh well, it looks really nice anyway. I got a Hermes wallet and we got a purse for a Cait (I hope you like it!). We also got 6 designer shirts (various brands) for under $20! We went to the driving range today (we had to practice before we play in Bintan on Friday) and we've finished off each day with a trip to the gym and a dip ... read more

So, here is my first entry into this blog...I thought I'd start by reviewing the highlights of my trek here, which began at approx. 3am on Friday 11-AUG in Boston, MA, and ends at approx. 7:30am on Sunday 13-AUG in Hong Kong (total time: roughly 39 hours). Friday 11-AUG (Boston time) 3am- awake for final packing and preparations for leaving. (3hrs sleep) 4:15am- Sean picks me up for ride to Logan. If this isn't friendship defined, I don't know what is. I figure I am on the hook for at least 3 apt/house moves for this one. 4:30-6:00- Logan is a madhouse due to recent media frenzy about London terrorism plot. Lines are clogged with people checking in for flights at 9am, 10am, noon, 1pm and beyond! Thankfully, American Airlines staffed for the occasion by only ... read more

Thats it I made it out. Thanks to the typhoon I was delayed a bit and this delayed the inevitable enslaught of ass in Bali but at least I got to take the car out one more time and see some old mates. DJ shadow's equipment never made it to HK so didnt even get to see him as a consolation. I am not too sure about how concerned he was as was evident from the two hookers who left the VIP room backstage at 'THE EDGE' Personally I though he could have done better, but I guess my standards are a higher than most blokes (Sam you shut up!). Actually thinking back it was quite early when they left, wonder what that means maybe his set was not the only thing that ended prematurely. I ... read more

Just a quick note before we leave for Shanghai. Last night we wanted to have an night on the town. Unfortunately there is a small typhoon to the south that is headed for Thailand but causing wind and rain here. There was a short break in the weather and we headed out for Hong Kong Central. We tried the club scene of Lan Kwai Fong, but the restaurants did not look appealing. We started wandering and ended up on Hollywood Road and found an Italian restaurant called Goccia. We had a locals experience. It was nice and upscale and for the moment we felt like part of the Hong Kong elite. I had grilled Boston lobster (yes, I went to HK for american fare) and Dave had King Prawns. The food was fabulous. The owner and ... read more

Before we take off tomorrow to return to Shanghai, here are my thoughts on Hong Kong. It has been a long time since I was in New York City but my impression is that Hong Kong is a mix of London and NYC with a Chinese flair. It is very international. There are people, shops, and restaurants from all over the world. When we get back to mainland China, it will be China. Where we are staying is in Kowloon which could be considered the "Queens or Brooklyn" of Hong Kong. It is more residential with a lot of shops and malls. There are high rise buildings that seem to be apartments. It also seems more scrappy. Across Victoria Harbor is Hong Kong Island which probably is the "Manhatten" of HK. That is where the offices, ... read more

In case anyone is wondering, I finally slept! Alex from the office gave me some Ambien--don't worry I am not going to pull a Patrick Kennedy and drive into the Capitol--it actually worked very well, without a hangover. I am finishing up work now and we are having an art tour, since the office is new, the curator is here hanging some great new pieces and then we (Karen and I) are going to the "women's market" where they have lots of knock-offs (jewelry, clothes, etc). It is still overcast, but we did have a few moments of blue sky today. Tomorrow morning I am off to Beijing and hope that I will have internet access there as well. These posts sound a little boring so far, but I hope they'll pick up once I get ... read more

Man these days have been pretty crazy! Really overwhelmingly claustrophobic/depressing/exciting.... the smog has gone now but it's still notably harder to breathe in the city than in the hills around it. This is really a island of two classes with a huge gap between them, everyone who can afford to drive sits in a nicely air conditioned merc or beamer, and everyone else lives in a dirty concrete jungle with no plants and dripping air conditioners. We didn't realy realise until we got out of the city and into the "'burbs" and then even weirder into the countryside where people live in spacious shacks - how can you have this on one of the most densely populated islands in the world? We've spent a lot of time in and around the markets - yeah, touristy.. but ... read more

Somehow I was able to get out of bed from my night of "sleep" and make it to work for an 8:30 conference call. I think I slept for about an hour and will be running a coffee IV today. The office is beautiful and the views are amazing...unfortunately, it is raining and will be raining until I leave on Saturday. There was a hurricane (called typhoon if it originates in the pacific) that passed earlier in the week and now we are getting the remnants of it. By the way, this thing does not have spell check, so I am not going to certify my posts as 100% accurate. Everyone speaks English and I have already seen quite a few Americans, no sox hats yet, but I am sure I'll see a few. Seinfeld is ... read more

Although it is cloudy, Gigi from the office took me over to Kowloon tonight, which is across the water from my hotel. That is where the best views of the skyline are, because it looks a the financial district. The office was good today, I was tired, still haven't slept, but am looking forward to sleeping very soon. ... read more

We arrived at Hong Kong at about 8AM and waited for the clearing of the ship. Everything was pretty much on time for this port as well. Pulling into Hong Kong was really pretty, almost like Hawaii; however, it was really foggy and misty so it wasn’t that clear to see. Hong Kong is extremely modern. Extremely tall buildings. After the ship cleared, jess and I walked around the terminal for a bit. This terminal was a lot like Singapore’s. Once you walk off the ship, you were in this huge mall. So that’s kind of good, but it’s a little annoying because you have to walk a good ways to get outside into the city. Anyway, at about 11AM we had the city orientation group. This city orientation was quite boring with the exception of ... read more
