Xinjiang is an interesting place to visit. According to one of the guide book, "This is the vast land farthest away from the seas yet full of profound traditions and vitality...." In the few days we were there, we experienced very hot weather in one day, and touched snow in another day. We even witnessed a hailstorm. ... read more

We celebrated New Year's on the Bund watching the fireworks over Pudong with Stefan and Markus, my fellow students at UIBE. As I described in the previous blog, these guys had been traveling all over China, as far as Tibet and we had agreed to meet up in Shanghai. We came down on the double-stacked "soft sleeper" express train from Beijing, sleeping across from each other on the top bunks, a great improvement from the tripled-stacked "hard sleeper" I had taken in October to Inner Mongolia. Poor Jennifer was so sick and we had to share what I had come to view as luxury in China, but was clearly a little bit of a shock for the uninitiated. We stayed at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music which had dorms that served as a hostel. Yet more ... read more

I've unfortunately had to come back to this blog retrospectively, so I will do the best to recant what we did. This is also before the time of my digital camera and so photos have to be scanned, I will do my best to make this happen. As the title vaguely alludes, this blog will focus on Jennifer's visit in December of 2000 and January of 2001 to China when I was living in Beijing since September 2000, studying Mandarin at UIBE in Chaoyang District (among other things). This is the only time I was in Beijing that was not covered by the hundreds of pages I wrote in my paper journals during the six months that I was there, so I'd like to do my best to tell the story of a time that might ... read more

I am writing this blog 6 years after my trip to China and so my memories are a bit dodgy. Also the photos are quite blurry as they have been scanned in from old prints (which were already quite fuzzy). More than anything I am just trying to make sure I make my travelblog map of places I have visited as red as possible! Anyway... During 2000-01 my brother spent a year teaching English in China and as we couldn't handle the thought of not seeing him for a whole year, me, my Mum and Dad decided to go over to Beijing for a week long trip just before Christmas. I really enjoyed the visit, seeing so much in such a short space of time. We were on an organised tour - great if you want ... read more

One night I was writing in our journal. I wrote: "Outside I can hear the happy voices of many children playing. They were playing a childrens singing game. If I am right in interpreting what I hear, one group sings and the second responds. Intermixed with the singing I could hear children laughing, calling to each other ... having a great time together. Living in a safe and a secure environment these children have a great time together." This Quonset hut type building, which was beside our building, was a favorite place for many children. Every day several would climb onto the top to play, sit and talk, study, and call to friends. Surprisingly no child was hurt the entire time we lived here. Big kids would help smaller children on and off the building. Parents ... read more
