It was nearing the end of Ann's trip and we only had one full day in X'ian... so of course there was only one place to go...... I'd read various blogs about the Terracotta Army before we got to X'ian - some raved about it whilst others thought it over-rated. Personally I thought it was astounding. Imagine you're an Emperor living some 2000 odd years ago and aware of your mortality your start building your tomb.... which you decide to have guarded by 8000ish life size terracotta soldiers and horses that will protect you in the afterlife.... each piece is unique and brightly painted and the whole lot is lined up in battle formations and buried in underground pits!! The Emperor in question was Qin Shi Huang, who ascended the throne at the age of 13 ... read more

Coming to Sichuan I have an impression on mind; it is the home to hot girls and the hot cuisine. Women here are generally gifted with flawless skin. But the cuisine is not something that I yearn for. If you think you can eat spicy, think twice before you order the famous Sichuan food. Their standard of spicy or hot is so different from ours. I always emphasize “NOT spicy, OK?” “No problem!” they reply. LIERS. But being here we did try the Sichuan hot pot. The waitress gave us a pile of napkins. I was quite impressed by her generosity, but soon we realized with that amount of hot peppers and an-inch-thick spicy oil flowing on top of the soup base, some of us end us with sausage lips and tomato faces. This pile of ... read more

Dair: We've been in Beijing for going on five days now, and I know this sounds cliched, but it seems like an absolute lifetime has passed since we left Aberdeen. It has been an unsettling past few days, mainly because of every traveller's (or any airline passenger's, for that matter) worst nightmare - lost luggage. We arrived pretty much on time in Beijing after an extremely comfortable flight, but all good feeling toward Qatar Airways quickly evaporated with each bagless rotation of the carousel. To make matters worse, it wasn't a mutual seen of desperation... my bag arrived, only Alison's failed to make it out of Doha. Nerves hanging by a thread, we summoned up the energy to go through the necessary reporting procedures and board a bus into central Beijing. It was horribly overcast, and ... read more

My visit to "Number One Middle School of Taizhou Municipality" was the highlight of the day; an eye-opening experience, reminiscent of my childhood of the 50's, i (n Germany. Taizhou College offered me to observe the instruction in several of that school's English classes, and to collect thoughts and ideas for some in-service training for Chinese teachers of English during the month of July at the college. This Middle School is very proud of honoring Chinese President Hu Jintao as one of its former students and alumni. I was impressed by the beautiful and inviting landscaping of the school's campus. The students are young teenagers, never shy to yell a friendly hello, and eager to great even an older yet "handsome" Western face. :-) The teachers looked young, perhaps in their twenties and thirties, and both ... read more

"Whore of the Orient, Paris of the East; city of quick riches, ill-gotten gains and fortunes lost on the tumble of dice; the domain of adventurers, swindlers, gamblers, drug runners, tycoons, missionaries, gangsters and backstreet pimps; the city that plots revolution and dances as the revolution shoots its way into town" is how the Lonely Planet on China describes Shanghai prior to the Communist revolution. Since then, a lot has changed. After the Chinese government dropped some of its Communist principles and decided to embrace capitalism in a form which it calls "socialist market economics", Shanghai has been unstoppable. It is now one of the largest, most modern, and richest cities in China. It grows and changes at an astonishing rate. The Pudong area of town, which used to be farmland until 1990, offers an impressive ... read more

The 1st weekend in the city Taizhou, Jiangsu Province and on the campus of Taizhou College was a kind of Star Treck moment with: " Beam me up to another planet, Scotty". The culture shock this time was less momentous, thanks to last summer's first visit to the city. Never-the- less, it is a serious awakening. There is a bombardment of sounds, sights, smells, tastes, that make quickly clear: " Life will not quite be the same again". The butterflies of anticipation are now the butterflies of reality, and the eagerness to embrace all that is offered to the senses, is THE cure for the butterflies. What was only an after-thought one year ago is now dimensional fact. I am sad, that I have not been able to link the photos of these first days, but ... read more

The day started like any other. Got up brushed our teeth, etc.....oh wait you don't need to know all that you want to know what's up with the title of this blog?? Well the bad day started with a 530am wake up call, that's not all that bad, but it's still early! The day got a little worse after 4 hours of driving we arrived at a restaurant and after eating a very poor meal we found out the prices listed in the menu were not Yuan (Chinese Currency) but in American dollars. So instead of 2Y it was more live 15Y. That is a fairly hefty ticket for a meal that was not that good!! Ok still not a bad day enough for you? Let me just say that Tibet's roads are not quite done ... read more
