Day 1 & 2 After the horrible 5 squashed trip from Kunming we finally arrived in outer Dali, not old city Dali like we thought, so we caught a taxi to the hostel which was great value for money except that the hot showers weren't working. So the next day we recieved a refreashing cold shower, but it was good because the weather was extremely hot and it looked like a sweaty day ahead of us. We walked straight out of the hostel into old town Dali, which was busy with Chinese tourists everywhere. Inside the town walls it had been converted into a tourist market. All of the traditional shops were now gift shops and there were westerners everywhere. Don't think I had seen so many westerners in China at one place. After leaving the ... read more

We caught a bus to Xianguan, aka New Dali, then attempted to change there to get to Old Dali. Unfortunately no-one seemed to know of the bus number mentioned in our guidebooks, but we ended up on a different bus going in the right direction. In Old Dali there was similar confusion, as none of the street names we saw tallied with the meagre map we had. We eventually found the cable-car that we knew would lead to our guesthouse - unfortunately it was in a park, which we also had to pay to enter, leading to expenditure equivalent to 1.5 days in the guesthouse before we'd even reached it. By the time we reached the top, it was chilly and pissing down. The "couple of minutes" walk as per the RG turned out to mean ... read more

It's spring Break and ALL of China has hit the ground running. Plane tickets are three times the usual. Trains are all booked. Hostels can charge ungodly amounts for a bed that lacks a mattress and a shower that lacks hot water (even though they claim hot water). Chinese merchants can get away with anything this week.....it's May holiday. Just as in October, the government of China declared May 1- May 7....holiday. I doesn't matter that the days are Tuesday to Monday....that is when holiday is...done. Most of my teacher friends had to work Sat. Sun and then Mon., an 8 day week, which really takes the hot air out of the holiday celebration, but luckily I played dumb, blonde foreign teacher and escaped the 8-day work week by booking my ticket and apologizing later. So ... read more

Having learnt from the no-sleep cheap seats, we got the second class sleeper to Kunming in Yunnan province. Kunming sits at 1800m above sea level so the scenery gradually switched from flat rice fields and limestone mountains to brown undulating hills and forested areas - a nice change. From Kunming got on a warp speed bus heading west to the old town of Dali. While most Chinese buses like to overtake on straight patches of road filled with oncoming traffic and then pull back in at the last possible moment or just ram anything smaller off the road, this guy chose completely blind corners to make his high speed moves. He was able to do this because he was super aggressive with his horn. In China, the bigger your horn, the more power play you have ... read more

We are in Dali (Yunnan Province) after a 15 hour bus ride, bus was nice to bad the road weren't. We just saw the three Pagodas park today. This park is centred around Pagodas erected in the 9th century still in great shape. The government also recreated all the temple structures that were razed in the cultural revolution that surrounded the Pagodas. This was one huge rebuilding effort.. It took over 3 hour to speed trough about half of the recreated Buddhist temples and structures. The effort of the building of the structures is what impressed me the most, the actual temples did not have the character that only time can give a structure. It's a little cooler here.. around 20 C, which is hard to get use to after 25+ C weather for the better ... read more

I Got High in Dali Everyone who travels to Dali gets high in one way or another, it’s just what happens there. I suspect that a lot of people spend more time than they intended in Dali for just that reason. The thing is though that there are more ways to get high than by using the readily available stream of drugs on the street or by hanging out in one of the dozen or so stoner bars. I chose the more adventurous option for my trip: Cang Shan, the mountain sitting just behind the town. First though, I owe you an overview of Dali. The old town of Dali is a square city some few kilometers on each side which is placed between a gigantic mountain range on the West and a massive lake (Er ... read more

For what was supposed to be a few days in Dali, eights nights seems a bit excessive. But such was the charm of the town, or rather of the Dali area. My initial impression of Dali was generally dismissive; it's fairly picturesque, and has enough back streets and cafes to keep most people interested. But that was it for me, it just seemed like another Chinese town rebuilt to bring in tourists. My first night at our Hostel wasn't the best. So far I've not been greatly impressed with the civility of some other travellers, and I wasn't entirely happy being woken up at all hours. This coupled with my first 'Bog' update of the holiday left me feeling rather grumpy the next day. Luckily the 'next day' was a charming one. We decided to get ... read more
