... read more

in the morning i started to the railway station because i had to buy some tickets for the next day. i was kind of nervous since i did not know how well the communication would work and prepared as well as i could: phrase book, approximate time table for the trains and something to write and to draw. i went straight to the soft seat (1st class) ticket counter. just didn't dare to upset 20 chinese behind me because i was too stupid to speak there language. it went easier than i'd thougth. the woman behind the counter knew some words english and there was a monitor, wher i could see if everything went right. my wishes weren't too easy: i needed two tickets to sunzhou, one back to shanghai for felix and one furthe to ... read more

Greetings from Shanghai, China! Well, we've crammed in as much of China as we could in ten days - tomorrow we fly to Hong Kong, then Singapore, before reaching Australia on Monday morning! We managed to get our Chinese Visa of course, after much faffing at the consulate. You basically queue up, wait your number and hand over your passport and cash. I nearly didn't get one, because the silly security guard wouldn't let me in with an orange juice! We had waited there for so long, I had gone to fetch a snack breakfast for us both, to eat while we were waiting our turn. However, as my OJ wasn't allowed to go through the x-ray machine (?!!?!) I had to leave it downstairs.....cue much yelling by me at what a pointless little man he ... read more

Hi Friends - Here's a lovely story from my Mom, the woman who helped me write my first stories. I saw a lot of me in the old man, the sense of judgment and entitlement and wanting things to go my way. And strong reactions when they didn't. Fortunately, I have had plenty of teachers who have helped me along the way to let go of some of those ideas that were getting in my way. I wish I had interesting stories to tell you. I'm working a lot. Which might be bad, but since it is all yoga related, I'm happy with it. I've moved into a more permanent apartment, as permanent for me as things get anyway. It has a spare bedroom should you want to visit. And I have reorganized the kitchen so ... read more

Entramos en Shangai cantando ... read more

It's been a while since my last blog post - sorry about that. I actually have a lot to write about, though. Since I last checked in on th 19th I've gone out to a couple of new places and done some more traveling within China. Last weekend Chuck, Hisae, and I went to Huangshan (Yellow Mountain) and hiked to the top of the mountain and around its various peaks. It was one of the most beautiful places I've been. We took the train from Shanghai at 10pm and got in the next day at 9am (264RMB each for the soft sleeper car). Immediately, and expectedly since we'd heard from other people about their experiences in Huangsham, we were bombarded with people trying to sell us all sorts of various things we might need. We bought ... read more

"From there we are looking into entering Guizhou province the hard way (fancy that!) - how this actually pans out, remains to be seen!" ...well, it didn't!! That's not entirely true. We started out in the right direction, we just didn't get very far! There were early signs that things were not going to go to plan. North of Yangshuo, we arrived in Longsheng in the dark and brandishing a youth hostel flyer at all and sundry. Eventually we were ushered into a taxi mini-van which took off into the night at a terrifying pace. It soon became clear that our agreed 6 Yuan taxi fare was most definitely a 60 Yuan one after all. Longsheng Youth Hostel clearly had a bit of the Ryanair airport about it - i.e. it was nowhere near its namesake! ... read more

hi hi, it's that time of the year to visit shanghai again....so have fun with the pix...thank God, the weather was good...esp since the last time i went to Wuxi it was 40 deg celcius and tho we are used to the hot weather in singapore, we were dripping in perspiration when we walked...this time round, shanghai was esp windy and rainy as there was a typhoon just before we came...whew!! of course, "sui mi tao" was in season, so it was very good that we get to eat them again...juicy, fragant and of course...very very sweet...but 28 boxes seem a bit too much for our teams from both hci and nygh so...we gave away almost all the boxes as everyone in the was trying to eat at least 3 "tao" a day to help finish ... read more
