I was very excited about going to Guilin to see the nearby rice terraces. I had seen amazing pictures and I was looking forward to checking them out for myself. The rice terraces of Ping An are over 600 years old, planted by the Yao and Zhuang minority groups. Longsheng is about two and a half hours away from Guilin. It's not far, but the drive there is tough we went down and up and around mountains. I wondered how tour busses get up the narrow road, Cherry told us halfway through, the people get off their tour bus and separate into smaller mini-busses to drive up. The drive was really beautiful - very green pastures and farmland, clear water, and you could see terraced fields too. I sitting by the window and the drive is ... read more

Z lijangu autobusem przejechalismy do Dali, kolejnego bardzo turystycznego miasteczka w Yunnanie. Mnie Dali podobalo sie bardziej niz Lijang, Pawlowi odwrotnie. Przyjemna starowka, europejski styl, mila odmiana. Upal i zaduch byl potworny!, a ja zdarzylem sie juz przyz ... read more

Longsheng: Learning from our past mistakes, we hired a driver to take us three hours into the countryside to the Longji Rice Terraces. After winding high up into the hills, we came upon seemingly endless shelves that have been scalped over the centuries to maximize the arable land for farming rice. If you remove the tourists, this village appears to be identical to the way it must have been 5oo years ago. It reminded us of Cinque Terra for this exact reason. We spent several hours hiking through the middle of the terraces on the same stepping stone path that the farmers use. At the tail end of the hike, we encountered a farmer that was elated to peel a cucumber for us after we donated 10 Yuan to the cause. My guess is that the ... read more

This week, Felix and I ventured further north into the mountainous regions north of Guilin. I was in the region two years ago and loved it so much that I had to return, with the added bonus of being able to act as a tour guide for three youngsters and get a three day power trip. First stop was Longji, home of the Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces (Longji means dragon's backbone if you really wanted to know). The terraces are hewn into the mountainside high above the river which has carved the area into a massive gorge. The villages are feats of engineering, the words path and stream become inexplicably inseperable, and even when it's cold and rainy it is the most beautiful place in the world. Look at the photos, I'm told they are ... read more

hello, we're not actually in longii yet but in guilin but that isn't on here. we left yangshou thurs night and cycled out half an hour to the next village. here we stayed in traditional mud hut farmhouse...the insides were so beautiful...the comfy beds had mosquito nets hanging over them so it was like being in a four poster bed (or my old bed at the orchard)...but its weird the dreams they give you. then i went off to cooking school...made 5 dishes in a beautiful barn...very tuscan actually...made aubergine, stuffed vegetables, cashew nut chicken, patchoi, and beer fish. it was lovely...but i think my fish was off as it smelt funny and i was quite ill later...not nice...but fortunately we had shotgunned the only western ensuite! it was lovely food and great fun to ... read more

It took three different buses and a half hour walk to find our next accommodation. We trekked up into the mountains to stay at a small village called Dazhai up in the Longji Rice Terraces. We stayed at a basic guesthouse and spent the evening at another little place which was lit up with neon lights despite being in the middle of nowhere. The Terraces themselves are quite amazing, with an intricate series of tunnels and pipelines ensuring that water gets to all of the individual paddies... and they are up on the top of some bloody steep hills! Some of the paths we hiked along are hundreds of years old and took decades (or longer) to build which isn't that hard to imagine considering it basically meant heaving great rocks up the mountainside! We ... read more

On the last weekend before the course ended a group of students were taken away for the weekend by Jerry the Dean, Mrs Chen, overseas students co-ordinator and a number of other office staff. We hired two cars and drove about 6 hours north of Nanning to Longshen, the most beautiful mountainous region north of Guillin. Lonshen is a minority group area with traditional villages, like the 'Village of the Long Haired Women'! It is up in the mountains and absolutley spectacular. We stayed at a village called Pingan, high up in the mountains and only accessible by foot. Truely one of the most amazing places I have ever seen with terraced rice fields all the way up the steep mountains sides. The next night we stayed in another village famous for its natural hot spings. ... read more

The day's drive toward the West from the beautiful garden city of Guilin in Guangxi Province, turned into the next unforgettable journey, through a part of South-China, where little has changed for a thousand years. Only recently has a better road opened the way for "voyeur-tourists" like me to visit one of Nature's Great Paintings. The Longji Titian (or aptly named Dragon Backbone Terraces of Longsheng) have always been a travel-destination wish, and I was fortunate to visit them just before the rice-harvest, as the sheath of each kernel turns gold. We had rented a car, and were ready to explore the high ridges of the Rongshui River Valley and the surrounding countryside, dotted with Zhuang and Yao villages. All have remained quite virgin until the region opened to visitors only recently. The passing and unforgettable ... read more
