On the last weekend before the course ended a group of students were taken away for the weekend by Jerry the Dean, Mrs Chen, overseas students co-ordinator and a number of other office staff. We hired two cars and drove about 6 hours north of Nanning to Longshen, the most beautiful mountainous region north of Guillin. Lonshen is a minority group area with traditional villages, like the 'Village of the Long Haired Women'! It is up in the mountains and absolutley spectacular. We stayed at a village called Pingan, high up in the mountains and only accessible by foot. Truely one of the most amazing places I have ever seen with terraced rice fields all the way up the steep mountains sides. The next night we stayed in another village famous for its natural hot spings. ... read more

Two weeks into the course 9 of us took a trip to Beihai, a coastal town 4 hours south east of Nanning. To all the boys delight it was actually on the same weekend as the Miss Universe Bikini Competition.....need I say more. Beihai has a somewhat Gold Coast vibe about it. There is a big swimming beach with palm trees and umbrellas called "Silver Beach".....the pictures look more tropical than it actually is. But nice enough anyway: we even got to swim. The ocean is flat and warm like a bath and all the Chinese wear rubber floating rings....its totally hillarious. Whats even more hillarious is the girls that walk around on the beach with cone hats on and tons of make up. They stroll up and down with long pants and long sleeves to ... read more

Hi everyone, Thanks to all of you who have left a message - its great to hear from you and feel connected to back home. Well i thought I'd better report back on some of the more serious aspects of the trip in case anyone was getting the impression that all we do here is eat and drink at resturants, dance on bar tops and sing karaoke. The rest of the time we actually work in the different hospitals that are connected to the university. For the first 2 weeks, my group: Mitch, Jon and I were all sent to Hospital No. 1. Now these hospitals are TCM hospitals, they incorporate Western Medicine into a mainly TCM framework....well at least thats the impression I got after 2 weeks. We were stationed in the acupuncture in-patients ward. ... read more

Well food in China is amazing and sometimes challenging and deserves its own blog entry. Before I came I had no idea what to expect, my biggest experience with Chinese cuisine being limited to Yum Cha in the valley. We had heard from previous students that the food was terrible, there is even a rumour that one past student was so scared to eat anything that she ate bread the whole time she was here.... And then there was that unlucky student who got Hep. A during her trip. Well I had my Hep. A shots so have nothing to worry about, that and I'm taking some pretty good immune herbs plus a digestive system booster. The first week in China was hysterically funny in regard to eating out....we did many lucky dips from various menues ... read more

Our second weekend in Nanning was celebrated by a huge night out, possible a little too huge as it was around this time that everyone started getting sick with flu and bad chest infections. The night started in Felicity's room with vodka and warm juice drunk from tea cups. We had our 2 interpretors Ling and Simon along for the ride as well as two soccer buddies Mitch had befriended. Wicked, a night out with the locals is always good. The club we were taken to was a place called "Feeling 57"....(the clubs have some pretty interesting names)! From what i have seen most clubs around here have a similar set up. There are lots of tables throughout the club which you need to sit at in order to get drinks. There is no going up ... read more

We have settled into university life by now and i feel as though i have lived in China for years. Weekdays are pretty full with 8 am starts at the various hospitals each group has been assigned to. We have a break for a few hours around midday, sometimes all you can do is sleep....the heat and workingb at the hospital can really take it toll. Afternoons are back at the hospital or in lectures. Our lecturers are ancient Chinese professors who only speak mandarine so can go quite slowly sometimes as each sentance has to be translated by one of the'translators. On a whole though they are very interesting as these guys have been doing acupuncture forever. The best part is when they demonstrate their needling techniques. They insert the needle and tell you were ... read more

One week has gone so fast yet at the same time it feels like i have lived in China for years. We have all settled in really well to our dorm....its the foreign students building on campus at the Guangxi TCM Medical University. Its been updated since the last students from ACNM came over and now has flushing toilets, sweet. Actually the rooms are really nice, much better than i was expecting. I and most of the Brisbane crew live on the top floor, level four. The rooms are like big hotel rooms with TV (only Chinse, very bad acting), phone (so you can all phone me), desk, kettle etc with own bathroom and they get cleaned once a day just like a hotel too. Not bad after seeing the dorms were the local students live, ... read more

Well I am finally set up with computer facilities in my room so am going to attemp to set up this travel blog. Should be intereting considering I only got a laptop last week and am not that big into technological escapades. Thanks Stevie for the crash course before I left for sunny China. Travelled to Hong Kong for a night with 2 other students from ACNM, Mitch and John. Hong Kong was a real surprise, so clean and organised, not like some other big Asian cities I have been to. Such a beautiful city with the mountains rising out of it, lush green tropical rainforests and white sandy bays. Managed to see Man Mo Temple, a very famous old temple in the city, full of hundreds of coils of insense hanging from the ceiling, up ... read more
