Zhuhai (jew-high) is a city of around 1-2 million people (smaller than Shenzhen) Traffic-funny, if not chaotic. I think compared to most I've picked up the fact that you just go. If there's a clearing in traffic and a side walk- don't think just stick out your arm and go. I took a picture of some of my fellow teachers running across the street- I found that it was very funny. First as I'm walking across the street you hear "oh my god he's going" and "wow" hillarious stuff and really no problems. My first taste of Zhuhai was going to a grocery store called JusCo (apparently quite popular in Europe) After getting a lather puff thing I decided to walk a little bit with another colleague of mine. You get past the stares quite quickly- ... read more

The first day was interesting. I went on the bus. I went shopping for clothes. And food. And ate a lot. And used the squat toilet with success. And had my first classes. I have decided to drop a level in my Chinese language class and am so much happier now that I have. I am a bit bored, but at least I understand what's going on. In the AM, a few of us went shopping to buy a notebook for one classmate. We got into the mall, found the bookstore, shopped successfully, and then couldn't find our way out. We stopped at took pictures over the fence of a park. Shopping in the afternoon was was interesting. I needed undergarments since I have no luggage. I have managed to borrow 3 shirts and a skirt ... read more

When going to China you go through immigration first- they check your passport and clear you on your way. It's weird though going through immigration then customs that I'm now an alien working in a foreign country. That one moment of clarity really made me feel ashamed of the racism of our country. Most won't get to experience the staring and feeling of being a minority- let alone a working minority alien. Within our first day you can definately see more similarities then previously imagined. In the Hong Kong airport restroom there's this guy that just stands there with a mop seemingly ready to mop up a mess should it come abound. Yet no one talked to him (myself included) and you definately sensed that he was probably someone from a village or at least of ... read more

Well, I made it to China and I have to say it's pretty freakin' awesome. Getting here was a bit hairy. After arriving in San Fransisco our flight to Hong Kong was delayed nearly twenty hours due to a typhoon. Fortunately I had met a couple of people from my group (Kris and David) and the three of us shared a hotel room. I was actually grateful for the break between my two flights. The flight to Hong Kong was long but uneventful. David was sitting in front of me and we made fun of the loud poker players sitting next to me for most of the flight. After arriving in Hong Kong we had to wait for a couple of hours for our buses. I got a doughnut and a coffee at Krispy Kreme that ... read more

This will be short and sweet. Or so I say... Perhaps "to the point" is more accurate. I made it. But my luggage has not. The United guy in the Phoenix airport kept yelling "Thai Food!!" which I coulnd't figure out how that would lead to a flight delay. Food? Thailand? Ohhhhhh, TYPHOON. That would explain a 19 hour delay. And my need to get a very expensive hotel room. With 2 new friends in the same situation. We even had a doorman and the room had a fluffy bathrobe! And why I, "might want to pick up my bag in San Fran." "Might" does NOT imply that you will only check it thru to San Fran. And that I need to pick it. Or else. At least to me it doesn't. No, it implies that ... read more

After a bit of a sleep in and breakfast we decided to have a bit of a wander around Shatin. There is a river next to the hotel so we wandered down there hoping not to be caught out in any more downpours. Strolled through the cultural museum and saw lots of old stuff which was actually quite interesting considering New Zealands heritage of note barely stretches back more than 150 years. We caught up with John again at around 4.00 to catch the ferry to Zhuhai, China at 7.30. This involved the normal customs things like passports, boarding gates and things. But there was no drama getting into China despite John carrying a whole lot of bike parts which must have looked suspicious under the x-ray. The ferry was a bit like our Quickcat and ... read more

Hi everyone!! Hope you are all well and in good health!!! So I will work through the events in a systematic format:) Shenzhen Firstly I went to Shenzhen for the weekend a little while ago... I took the bus there with my good friend Ivy and met up there with Max... So not much to tell about Shenzhen except that it is super clean and new... sky scrapers everywhere and the streets are almost shining! They even have a WalMart there... hahah! I spent one night at some Canadians couch and the next night at an all inclusive spa. Again super cheap!!! a 2 hour Japanese massage, whatever that means I don't know... But it was great!! Then a complete scrub down which felt kinda weired but I guess I was all clean after. They have ... read more

From Singapore, we took Tigerairways (0600) to Macau. Next, we took the AP1 bus from the airport to the Macau-Zhuhai border; Portas do Cerco (Barrier Gate) Frontier Checkpoint on the Macau side, and the Gongbei checkpoint on the Zhuhai side. The queue at the immigration was very long (because it was a Sunday) but it moved quite fast. Many people from Macau travel across to Zhuhai just to buy groceries or to have breakfast ('zhou cha'). Therefore, try to avoid weekends if you can. After clearing immigration, we walked to Ming An Hotel which was located behind the clock tower (can be seen from the Gongbei checkpoint). We had our first lunch in Zhuhai in the hotel's restaurant. The food was delicious. After the hearty meal, we walked back towards the Gongbei checkpoint, not to leave ... read more
