Hard to say good-bye to Manfred and Susanne, a very nice couple! We held a private farewell party for them on Feb. 13th, 2009. I built up friendship with Da Xing Xing through 2-year "fighting" at work. Hope to see them in Austria again.... read more

After four weeks in Zhuhai the things that I miss are simple: a good English cooked breakfast, loose leaf earl grey, walking in the peaks with my friends, access to my friends, crisp autumn leaves, the dawn chorus, the sound of the wind blowing in the trees, the colour of the red November sky, changing seasons, hanging out with Patti in pyjamas well into the day ( me nagging), my garden, light beams, - access to places like café 9, the quick walking paths I know in Sheffield between the allotments and so on. AND, I’ve realised now more and more that I miss my books and access to words that inspire. I’ve given away all the books that I brought to China, except one. We had too many and they were heavy. I read 2 ... read more

It took a few blurry days for my body to sort out the 12 hour difference between China and the States. It came as no surprise then that walking around China during the day was like wandering through a dream; most things were recognizable, but with a twist of surreality. The training schedule was rigorous to say the least. By the time we were done with Chinese courses, TEFL courses, and example classes, we were all ready to cut loose. Our first real night out, a group of us took a bus to Jiu Bai Jie. In China, the streets all have themes. I noticed this first when I was walking down a street and came across a store that sold only fire extinguishers. Two stores down, the same, and next to that store, another. I ... read more

We dashed out of our hotel to make our early morning flight, snagging whatever food we could from the hotel's breakfast counter. We boarded with relative ease, and I found out I was one of the lucky winners of a middle seat in the central isle. Almost immediately after liftoff, they started a movie, all the windows went down, and they served us a meal. This would be the first of several hobbit-sized meals, served at hobbit-like regularity; breakfast, second breakfast, elevensies, ect. They seemed to coincide with the beginning of each new movie, and reflected what the particular movie would be about (I knew "Kungfu Panda" would be coming up next when they served us a bowl of ramen noodles). I found that my first international flight essentially reverted me back to my infant days. ... read more

On arrival to our home for the next two weeks, the Sea View Hotel, we were shuffled into the dining hall where a small army of bright-eyed waitresses seated us at tables for twelve. I lost count of the total number of dishes, but I think twelve to fifteen would be a conservative guess. After dinner we were sent to our rooms- Goldilocks would have found the beds just right. They left out two small tubes of toothpaste (that looked frighteningly like superglue) that my roomate told me was translated "Black Hey!". He once saw a commercial on CCTV where a little girl was walking down the sidewalk with a handful of balloons, and lost one into a tree. A great shadow spread across the road, and a African-American basketball player no shorter than eleven feet ... read more

I know, I suck at blogging. I have been in China for about two weeks now and I have only thus written an entry. Since I cannot possibly recount everything that has taken place since then and now, and believe me a lot has indeed taken place, I will try and sum up as best I Can. After we landed in Hong Kong we took a bus over to mainland china. For those of us that are a bit weak with geography Hong Kong is actually a little island off the coast of China. We reached Zhu Hai at about 3 am and got up the next morning at 8am for TEFL (teach English as a foreign language) class. Class class class. That is pretty much how Zhu Hai was spent. 8-9:30- TEFL class 9:50-11:50- Chinese ... read more

Last day in Zhuhai! And last night with my annoying roommate! Another teacher, Serena, needed a new roommate so she and I will be rooming together in Shenzhen. Yeah! The exam this morning was really easy. I aced it, I'm sure. It was really just a formality anyway. They need all of us to pass. :) After the test I walked down to this island park about a mile away from the hotel. I wanted to get a few more pictures before we leave. It rained again earlier, so it was pretty cloudy. And the humidity makes my camera lens fog up, so taking pictures is not always easy. Afterwards I walked into town to Jusco to get lunch. There were three little girls playing on the stairway that all said 'hello' as I walked by. ... read more

It’s been a busy past few days to saw the least. I’ve barely had time to email much less blog. And when I did, the pictures just wouldn’t upload. So here I am finally. We’re finishing up in Zhuhai now. I’ve already had my Chinese test, and Monday I had my teaching presentation. It went alright. We’re supposed to act up like real kids do (we’ve had a bit of fun doing that since as kids, none of us ever did that—we were always the goody two shoes studious ones). We accidentally broke the chandelier twice, just to give you an idea. And we had people hiding under desks, stealing the teacher’s stuff, talking on phones, writing inappropriate pictures on the board, lots of note passing, even a fight. Hilarious. Even the critiquers were in on ... read more

Things I've learned thus far in China: The words for bank, dumpling, little one, want, toliet, this one/that one, and that when menus don't have pictures I'm almost entirely screwed. My Mandarin phrase book has a section with pickup lines, rejections, and a whole 3 pages on sex! There are lines like easy tiger, slow down, harder, faster, and "this is my first time." If you have to pull out your phrase book to tell someone it's your first time, you probably shouldn't be sleeping with them. Take note, Lonely Planet. Things I will learn while in China: What it's like to be stared at: According to William O'Donnell, I "will know what it's like to be black." Yes, he did say that outloud. That phrase book section was the inspiration for Kofi and my mock ... read more
