Ok so since we were up so early (4 a.m.) we were the first people to be seated for the breakfast buffet (6 a.m.) Bao decided to indulge in a standard Chinese breakfast otherwise known as a powdered sugar doughnut and I had the traditional ancient Chinese elixir of the gods a.k.a. cappucino. But I did have some Chinese food, I did, such as a 1,000 year egg (you know that is just the name, right?) and a green vegetable. Really nice food, immediately went against my vow not to have fruit on this trip and ate an entire plate of watermelon. I did offer some to Bao but he was still busy with the doughnut. Then we ventured out for a morning stroll after our leisurely breakfast (by then it was already 7 a.m.) Very ... read more

Today we had an early flight to Beijing through Eastern China Airways. As soon as we got out of the plain I felt the humid weather and it was very foggy due to the humidity. Beijing has 5 rings of interstates around it so we went from the fifth to the second, where our hotel is. We relaxed for a little while in the hotel and then Jie and I set off for the Beijing Zoo to see Pandas! We took a taxi into downtown and found the Zoo, paid for tickets, and ran inside to find pandas. They had a huge part of the zoo dedicated to pandas and the different kinds. Haha, they had olympic games pandas, asian games pandas, and baby pandas. Overall we saw 7 of them. The first two were behind ... read more

Friday July 16, 2010 Today was the day that I was going to take a breath and try to get caught up on emails, packing, and my blog. I managed to accomplish most of these tasks and hopefully you have enjoyed reading the latest blogs. As most of you know, I am all about a little quiet time. As I tell Rich some people rejuvenate by being around people and some accomplish this by being alone. It has only taken Rich 30+ years to realize that we are different in this respect. I enjoy my quiet time and he could care if there were 100 people around him at all times. Hence, the reason Beijing and him may get along a wee bit better then me. There certainly is very few places that you can accomplish ... read more

After a 25 hour train ride I was back in Beijing once again. We left Hung Hom station in Hong Kong at 15.15 on 23rd October, and arrived at 16.05 on the 24th October. Ben and I had now met up with our friend Nikki who is joining us on our trans-Siberian adventure. I spent the majority of the journey horizontal on my top bunk reading and sleeping. There is not much else to do aside from a few card games and a trip to the dining cart! It went by fairly quickly. Day One Once through immigration, we crawled through the Beijing traffic to the Red lantern hostel in the Xicheng district. Luckily there was a room for us and we went out in search of dinner. Thankfully the lady warned us that we had ... read more

So last weekend (June 25th) we all went on a day trip to the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall. That was an absolute blast. This particular section of the wall boasts the most reconstructed area of the Great Wall, as well as some very interesting features. For example, it’s the only part of the wall with as many watch towers as it has, probably to protect Beijing, along with the nearby mausoleums. The section also boasts the most Ming-style intact architecture, along with places from which to shoot arrows on both sides of the wall. There’s a name for those places, which are really just holes in the wall, but I can’t remember the name of it. The wall isn’t too far out of Beijing. Probably an hour to an hour and a half’s bus ... read more

Its been a very long time since I last wrote, and lots and lots have happened since. First, during the last two weeks, I have taught two different classes. First, I taught a class that consisted of rising third graders. This means they would be entering third grade in the fall. This was a challenge, the misunderstanding of the languages really was a challenge to overcome. The first day, we were just thrown into working, so we really didn't know how to teach or what we SHOULD be teaching. However, after the first day all of my fellow interns and myself got into a "rhythm". All of us started teaching, and playing games. It was amazing. I was very happy, and proud to see not only myself, but several other interns rise to the challenge of ... read more

I want to elaborate more on Cuandixia before moving on to my other stuff I have planned to talk about (there’s literally a list in front of me so I won’t forget). The place itself is incredible, but way too touristy. Every twenty feet there’s a vendor with a cute little kid who comes up to you and says, “Hello”. By the way, I’ve figured out that one of the most fun things to do in China is let people greet you in English, then say something really complex in Chinese back to them. Their facial expressions are incredible. I quickly got bored of the touristy side of Cuandixia and decided to climb the mountain. As beautiful as it was, I couldn’t help but laugh at the fact that the climb up the trail was literally ... read more

I must start this blog off again by apologizing for the gap in between updates. As I’ve said before, it’s really difficult to find time for them, but I’ve been writing stuff down, both weird and interesting, so I don’t forget to mention them in my subsequent update. So, needless to say, since it’s been a good two weeks since my last update, this one will be a really, really long one. Now where to begin? More observations from China - note that all of these are based entirely on speculation and due to my lack of exposure to “real China” (seeing how people live, their actual living conditions, their salaries, seeing taxation and subsidizations from the government, etc.), they could be entirely wrong. However, those who know me know that I spend a lot of ... read more

Hey Everyone!!!! Sorry its been a couple of days! I just arrived in my new "pad" at the school where I will be teaching for the next couple of days, but let me begin with some of the sites I was able to see before my journy to the school. One of the most exciting things of the last couple of days was my opportunity to go to the so called, "technology center of the world" in downtown Beijing. It was amazing, imagine yourself in a place that is wall to wall electronics, with about 50 "stands" per floor, and at each one of those "stands" two or 4 people. NOW think of all of those people seeing your from America, and yelling for you to come by camera's. It was amazingly funny. People would grab ... read more
