Last week, I traveled back to a life previously lived. For seven days, I reveled in reunions with old friends, feasted on Beijing delicacies, breathed in (relatively) smog-free air, and bargained up a storm at Beijing's famous Silk Street. For seven days, I imagined what life might have been like had I stayed. Just over a year ago, I had reached a fork in the road: four years in Beijing was long enough to have become truly immersed in the language and culture; what did I imagine for my life moving forward? Obviously, the choice I made at that time brought me back to the country of my birth, the incomparable United States of America. But was it the right choice? I had seven days to figure that out. I arrived in Beijing on a Monday ... read more

Last Month in China Since returning from Guilin my friends and I have been trying to see as much of Beijing as we can between classes and preparing for finals! Confucian and Lama Temples These two temples, though representing two very different philosophical ideologies that are predominant in China are situated right next to each other! When you walk through the gates of the Confucian temple you are greeted by Confucius himself. Stone white and about three feet tall; he represents the moral code that many Chinese today still lead their lives with. Confucianism emphasizes the importance of relationships and how one should act within each of those interactions. For example, a man is a son of his father, a husband to his wife and a subject to the emperor. Within all three of those relationships, ... read more

So, arrived in Beijing last Monday afternoon into glorious sunshine after a day and a half train journey from Ulaanbaatar. After weaving through some beggars and folks selling maps, found the subway which we couldn't see for looking at it and made our way to Dongsishitiao station. Subway is absolute pimps to use in Beijing, everything is in English due to the games, and it only costs 20p a shot. Hostel was about a 10 minute pad down the road, sweat was flowing, but was lovely to finally get some heat. Shame it didn't last. Restaraunts and street food in abundance on the way down the street, couldn't wipe the smile off my face! Hostel was great too, was basically as good as a premier in room, except it only cost £7 a night. Had our ... read more

A year ago when researching our honeymoon to the USVI, the idea dawned on Steph that we could get away for longer, for cheaper. Colin had mentioned long ago that he would love to go to Thailand one day - this memory came to mind, and upon looking up flight prices and realizing they were considerably cheaper than either of us had ever thought, the decision was made, and the "non-research" began. USVI was thrown out of the window for another time (and anyway, we already knew we would be there for a day for our wedding anyway, during the cruise stop!) and the trip to Thailand, with an extended layover in Beijing, and a few days spent in Malaysia, was born. Time seemed to pass at an alarming rate - with our destination wedding over ... read more

Well guys here's the latest from far far away! Beijing Right it's now the 20th so I definitly can't remember what happened day by day but hopefully I can remember at least a bit (which also might be difficult due the amount of brain cells I've been destroying over the last fortnight). So, basically we got to the youth hostel in a little back alley in Beijing and it was busy. The little bar was full of young white people, it was a new experience wandering into the hostel with a lot of 'big eyes' staring at you, who's the new guests? After sorting ourselves out we headed downstairs to the bar quickly as happy hour including food just started, so to make full use of the 70 yuan (quai) we just spent each we managed ... read more
