Last Month in China Since returning from Guilin my friends and I have been trying to see as much of Beijing as we can between classes and preparing for finals! Confucian and Lama Temples These two temples, though representing two very different philosophical ideologies that are predominant in China are situated right next to each other! When you walk through the gates of the Confucian temple you are greeted by Confucius himself. Stone white and about three feet tall; he represents the moral code that many Chinese today still lead their lives with. Confucianism emphasizes the importance of relationships and how one should act within each of those interactions. For example, a man is a son of his father, a husband to his wife and a subject to the emperor. Within all three of those relationships, ... read more

Guilin After completing our long week of midterms, our group took a trip to the southwestern part of China to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, a province very close to Vietnam! It was a great way to relax after a stressful week of tests and papers and it was especially nice to get away from the cold that has settled into Beijing. We went from pants, jackets and scarf weather to shorts and flip-flops! Our first stop was Guilin, which is located in the northeastern part of the province and is known for its karst peaks that are randomly placed and are mostly under 650ft tall. The city is concentrated near the Li River giving it very flat land along the river but then it has sporadic, grassy hills every where else. During our stay there ... read more

October 7th 2012

This past week (October 1-5) was China's National Holiday. Every Chinese citizen is off from work for this week and travels all over the country, especially to Beijing. My friends, Ben and Erin, and I decided to leave Beijing before it got too croweded and take the opportunity to visit two new cities: Hong Kong and Shanghai! Hong Kong Our flight to Hong Kong got in late last Friday night and we arrived at our hotel on Hong Kong Island around midnight. We were staying at the Cosmopolitan, which happened to be right next to a terraced cemetery but it was still nice (haha)! The next day we got up early and had breakfast in the “Times Square” of Hong Kong. It does look a little like a miniature New York there. We decided to test ... read more

Hello out there! The past two weeks have been all about getting used to living in Beijing! After our Silk Road Trip we had about two days to get re-settled (get food, toiletries, and school supplies) before our classes started! The Beijing Center held a reception for all of the students (about 60 of us) to meet all of the faculty. We introduced ourselves to our professors and some of mine immediately gave me reading to do for the following day! Four out of five of my teachers are native Chinese citizens that went to school in the United States. They know enough English to teach the class but that doesn't mean we can understand them all of the time! One of my favorite classes is Buddhism which is held once a week from 7:30-10:15 at ... read more

I’m sorry for the lack of entries lately! For the past two weeks I have been traveling on the infamous Silk Road! I figured I would show everyone the places we went and the things we did one by one. I also thought some of you might like a little historical background and a sneak peak at what we learned while we were traveling! The Silk Road did not obtain it’s name until 1877- long after it became the means for transporting goods, technology and ideas from east to west and vice versa. It begins in the east in Xi’an, a city that served as the capital to many of China’s dynasties. It runs west until it hits the Taklamakan desert, where it splits into a north and a south route. Taklamakan translates into: “you go ... read more

The past few days have been filled with orientation and exploring the area surrounding our campus here at UIBE. My friends and I have found the "wu market" or a Chinese equivalent to a Walmart not too far from our dorm. Unhappy to see that the lines in the wu market are just as bad as in Walmart, I took my time shopping around for some essentials! Toilet paper and bottled water are a must as well as some things to eat for breakfast. It's difficult to eat rice for every meal so I purchased some oatmeal and brown sugar that can be easily made with the boiled water from the kitchen! As for lunch and dinner we have been experimenting different places and types of Chinese food. A lot of what we've been eating has ... read more

Day two in Beijing! We started our morning with a five minute traditional exercise routine. I could handle the stretching and breathing but tai chi was very fast and difficult to do! The moves we did symbolized five spirit animals but I was too focused on staying balanced to remember them! We also did patting exercises which is exactly like it sounds- you pat yourself from head to toe to benefit your circulation. I'm not sure if it helped my bloodflow but I was certainly more awake afterward! I've seen a lot of patting while walking and even hoolahooping! After the morning of exercise and orientation we departed for the Mutianyu Great Wall! It took us about an hour by bus to get there and another half an hour just to climb to reach the actual ... read more

Ni hao! My first full day in Beijing has been quite an adventure! I arrived at the university at about 9pm local time very tired after getting little sleep on my flight but excited to be half way across the world for the first time! I quickly dropped off my suitcases and immediately met some other students downstairs for our first authentic Chinese meal. We headed across the street from UIBE to a narrow road with several restaurants. By pointing and head shaking I somehow managed to order beef and rice as well as succesfully eat it with chop sticks! The portions were HUGE and my meal was about 15 RMB which translates to about $2 U.S. dollars. After walking around the area with for a little we all returned to our rooms to unpack and ... read more
