TheBigTrip

Technically this is not all just about me but about us, Becca and Duncan going on an adventure together. After months of saving we are leaving for a trip to Asia. If you want to keep up to date with a clumsy couple which has not yet seen much of the world, you've come to the right blog!

Didn't expect it that quickly now did ya! Cambodia: Part 2! We had arranged with John to be picked up the next day so that we could travel with him to the ACCB which was a conservation and rehabilitation centre for the local endagered animals. On the way there we were also going to stop and the landmine museum and butterfly aviary (which claimed to be the biggest in South East Asia). We first entertained the idea of cycling to these destinations but were disheartened by the sheer brutality of the heat and the fact that Duncan would probably not be able to grasp the handlebars with one of his hands (it was also a hefty 100km round trip). First stop was the landmine museum, started by a man called AkiRa who has defused over 50,000 ... read more

OKOK we know, we're sorry. It has been TOO long but... hey we weren't being lazy we were just having fun! And YES it is hard to have time or even the energy to type ANYTHING. So as a result we've decided to do a little skip on Vietnam for now.... This being mostly due to the fact that we don't want to bore you with an emotionless step by step account of what happened and rather would like to entertain you with stuff thats fresh in the brain! Soooo readersss... here's part one of Cambodia! Cambodia Part 1: During the journey by boat from vietnam we were accompanied by 3 other Welsh girls who obviously were on the same cheapskate budget as us, seeing as the other 10 odd people in our Mekong tour had ... read more

27-01-2012 til 03-02-2012 Finally today the rain has subsided and I've found energy to type about our last destination in China. 3 weeks ago now I suppose but hey. We slowly awoke to the scenery of misshapen limestone peaks between flat open lush green grounds (paddies and fields) shooting past in the train. I knew we were close! Upon arrival we spotted a group of 4 backpackers which had been sat in Shanghai station. Wandering round the corner down the side of the road towards our hostel I jokingly said they'd probably follow us to the same place. Upon arrival in the Wada hostel we were surprised to see Bettina whom we had met and drank with in Beijing. Her job hadn't started yet so she had a week off to herself to spend in the ... read more

Shanghai!!! After a succesful hail down of a taxi in the morning (we haven't been to succesful in the past...) we managed to get to the train station in Qufu well ahead of time. As train journeys go it was a boring dozy 5 hours. Luckily the train conductor came to tell us to get off the train as I'd miscalculated an hour (would have shot straight past Shanghai otherwise). Although we weren't in the bullet train (a chance we're sorry we've missed but hey) we still managed to travel around 250km/ph which is a personal land speed record. After dumping our stuff in the hostel we headed out to find some form of food as the cook was on spring festival holidays in the hostel and most restaurants were closed in the vicinity (it was ... read more

Qufu 18 Jan - 22 Jan The historical significance of Qufu is that it's where Confucius and his grandson are buried, plus there's the mansions and a temple in his name. The present significance is that our drinking buddies are there, so after arriving at the hostel we sent a message to Yogi and Chris and much to our surprise within about 20 minutes they suddenly appeared at our hostel room door, normally they're kept in school until the weekend and it was a Wednesday. Yogi and Chris had managed to get out by telling their Shifu that they're friends had arrived and they were lost on the motorway and didn't know how to get into town. I imagine Yogi's bargaining skills came out to play for that one. Persuasive bastard always convincing us to drink ... read more

Well guys here's the latest from far far away! Beijing Right it's now the 20th so I definitly can't remember what happened day by day but hopefully I can remember at least a bit (which also might be difficult due the amount of brain cells I've been destroying over the last fortnight). So, basically we got to the youth hostel in a little back alley in Beijing and it was busy. The little bar was full of young white people, it was a new experience wandering into the hostel with a lot of 'big eyes' staring at you, who's the new guests? After sorting ourselves out we headed downstairs to the bar quickly as happy hour including food just started, so to make full use of the 70 yuan (quai) we just spent each we managed ... read more

04-01-2012 Today is what ended up as an eating day. With other words we didn't manage to really do much more exciting things but eat every 2 hours or so. This was mainly due to the fact we were taking a long time to do simple things. It's excrutiaingly hard to find an internet cafe in Harbin. We were first walking circles trying to find one which was non-existent but present on the crappy Lonely Planet map, then we decided to ask at the tourist information centre if they could show us one. The girls at the main desk talked back and forth to each other trying to figure out where there was internet, then finally after about 5 minutes and a conversation with the doorman, came up with an address. After another search and questioning ... read more

01-01-2012 This is our last kind of day in India. Generally we aren't counting it as a day as such as we have the stress and hassle of getting to the airport, lugging our 35 kilos of baggage around and basically have no plans to do anything exciting. We were lucky enough to drop the bags at the tourist centre whilst we plodded about Connaught Place to bide the time we had left. The flight was in the evening so everything was pretty much relaxed. We just managed to squeeze on the metro in the afternoon so were not looking forward to a repeat trying to get to the airport link later in the evening. Luckily we got a cab drop to the airport metro link as a final gesture from the tourist office. The China ... read more

December 30th 2011

30-12-2011 Now we are sitting in the train, hopefully about and hour away from Delhi. I just cracked out the last couple of days and as I'm on a roll decided to start this one as well. Mostly because I'm keeping my eye out for the cockroaches that are scuttling up the wall next to us. I'd just slept against that wall for the best part of 3 hours. Now I'm feeling completely paranoid that something might crawl in my clothes and have stuffed my trousers in my socks and moved Duncan to the window seat. In fear of one that Dunc flicked away, I even managed to almost spill my tea all over myself. Duncan is going to be picking the bags up off of the floor when we leave... I DON'T LIKE BUGS. After ... read more

27-12-11 Arrived at the hotel in Rishikesh at 04:30 in the morning to find a closed gate so the driver instinctively started blasting on his horn right outside, I eventually jumped round the gate to try the door and stop the drivers honking and someone finally appeared to let us in. All the staff were asleep in the foyer. The bag boy was shouted awake to show us to our room so we gave a nice 20 rupee tip (we took the bags ourselves), we felt bad enough just waking him up. Already the favourite guests in the hotel. Woke up and did the standard stroll through the town to have a look around find something to eat. Another cool place, pretty relaxed again and there's a couple of long pedestrain suspension bridges high up over ... read more
