Up at the butt-crack of dawn again and off to Suvarnabhumi (pronounced “Soo-wanna-poom” ) Airport in Bangkok to catch our flight to Siem Reap (pronounced “See-em Ree-ipp”), home of Angkor Wat…or to those of you from our hometown…where they shot Tomb Raider (gag—I can’t believe I just wrote that.) Must say that Suvarnabhumi is quite a site…it just opened less than two months ago and it’s the largest airport in Asia now. It’s quite a marvel of architectural wonder…never really noticed when we flew in. Two atavan and a few 2 inch-deep nail marks on David’s arm later, we made it to Siem Reap Airport—which is basically a strip of asphalt and a customs stand. What an amazing landing…flying over rice paddies and looking down on a landscape that’s so alien, we found ourselves continually mouthing ... read more

I'm back! There was just so much adventure today, and so much fun, that I ran out of room in the last entry. So, here I am again, with a short note, but more pictures that depict the day. I must say that we are all trying different things, from boat rides, to elephant rides, to ox carts, food, and so on. My heart was in my throat when I climbed on that elephant, but.......I know how to control my self-talk and I also asked for the oldest and slowest elephant (ha ha!)!!!! Didn't want one of those young perky things! Same thing for the oxen. Give me the oldest and most tired critter, please and thanks!!!! So, sit back and relax. Here are more photos. Happy Pat (and a bit sun-burned now too!)... read more

Sorry about lack of photos of Angkor Wat and Bayon but we had a problem with the shop that transfered them from memory card to cd and they are lost (could have been worse), we have a friend catching up soon and im sure his will be good so we will steal his and show you later After a 5 hour bus journey we arrived in Siem Reap, yet another bus journey of Karaoke & a dodgy Cambodian action movie, even though we couldn't understand a word we watched it anyway & made our own interpretation of what was going on. Arrived in Siem Reap at around 3.30pm, found ourselves a tuk tuk driver which was to be our personal driver for our Angkor Wat experience. He looked a little like Tiger Woods when he smiled ... read more

HAPPY 3rd BIRTHDAY JOSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're in Siem Reap, just got in this afternoon. Spent 4 days in Phnom Penh. Wonderful experience. I'm dying to share my photos but the computer I'm using is too slow... so hopefully next time. We took a taxi ( van) from Koh Kong to Phnom Penh... when people told me the roads would be bad I didn't know what to expect... but boy they weren't kidding! It's all dirt and if it rains... you're in trouble! I thought we were all going to die when it rained for about 10 minutes and our van spun out to the edge of a cliff! My goodness my heart almost popped out of my chest. After about 5 hours something happened to our van so the driver hitched a ride for 7 of us ... read more

Set off from Bangkok for Siem Reap at half seven, another all nighter there, just about caught the bus, the people we organised it with said we would be met at half seven but we weren't its only cause I asked that we got it. Me and Alice got to the border crossing with no real problems, Visa was sorted with no problems but then there was the road from Poipet to Siem Reap. Now I've heard about this famous 'road' but I didn't expect it to be as bad, I've sat on long bus journeys, I've sat on Mekong Speedboats, surely this road was gonna be easier than that?! I can can only describe the road as a dusty track which has been carpet bombed, theres 2 foot deep craters all over the road and ... read more

Hello! We just thought we would tell you all about our visit to Angkor in Cambodia which has definitely been one of the highlights of our trip. I don't know why it has taken so long to put all these pictures up but we have already left Cambodia and are in Vietnam now but just imagine if you can stepping back in time (ok just back two weeks) to when we were at Angkor.. now here comes the history bit.. Being so incredibly hyped up we were not sure what to expect at Angkor really but having made the lengthy pilgrimage from southern Laos to Siem Reap (the town closest to the ruins of Angkor) we brought a three day pass and went along to have a little look. The tickets to the site are $40 ... read more

OK, so for those of you who know us well, you will be amazed to learn that Chris has finally found a curry after a staggering 12 days without. AND Jackie had her first alcoholic drink of the holiday. The curry was not quite the same and we were sat out on the street on wicker chairs, the wine was Cambodian red but very good - even by Jax's tough standards. Half a glass and she was wobbling all over the town! Anyway, Cambodia has far exceeded all our expectations. Particularly our hotel; we had pre-booked into one of the best hotels but were not really sure what to expect. Turns out our hotel and service is far better than any hotel we've stayed in, in England, and easily on a par with the 5 star ... read more

We started this tour of Thailand and Indochina about 2 weeks ago. It has been a very strenuous tour and we have had very little time to ourselves -- no "days at leisure" like we had in NZ and Australia. We started the tour in Bangkok where we stayed at the Shangri-la Hotel which is a very nice hotel on the Chao Phraya River, the "River of Kings," which runs from Northern Thailand down to the Gulf of Thailand. Thailand is very close to the equator and so its days and nights are pretty equal -- 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime, every day of the year. We noticed right away how early it got dark here. What to say about Bangkok? A city of 12 million people -- it is an amazing ... read more

I have never felt as captivated by one country as I did in Cambodia. The past few days have truly changed my life - one of the most inspiring experiences ever. The following words and pictures do not nearly do it justice… From Bangkok, the bus journey is absolutely heinous! The lonely planet rightfully describes the trip as unreliable and averaging between 8 to 15 hours. Well, as I’ve learned the hard way, it’s always best and safest to go with the longer time estimates. Under a clear and hot and muggy sky, our bus left Bangkok around 8: 30 am (1 hour and a half behind schedule). The initial trip to the border was actually fine: nice, comfortable seats, plenty of snacks, water, music and reading material to keep me occupied…all good. Once we got ... read more

Invigorated by our temple tours we travelled the next morning to the nearby Pale School Pagoda to meet with the friendly monks who had invited us. On arrival both Chealy and Sokhorn both came out to meet us and led us up the external staircase of a two story building where bright orange robes were slung over the banisters and into their dormitory. Inside lay 4 single beds all draped in their stunning robes and on the walls brightly coloured murals and Buddhist posters. Sitting on a couple of chairs in the middle of the room we were surrounded by our three friends from the Temples plus a further two monks who were cheerily eager to talk with us. Delighted to have been invited where not many other tourists would have ventured we took the opportunity ... read more
