OK, so for those of you who know us well, you will be amazed to learn that Chris has finally found a curry after a staggering 12 days without. AND Jackie had her first alcoholic drink of the holiday. The curry was not quite the same and we were sat out on the street on wicker chairs, the wine was Cambodian red but very good - even by Jax's tough standards. Half a glass and she was wobbling all over the town!
Anyway, Cambodia has far exceeded all our expectations. Particularly our hotel; we had pre-booked into one of the best hotels but were not really sure what to expect. Turns out our hotel and service is far better than any hotel we've stayed in, in England, and easily on a par with the 5 star hotels in Dubai. So Jax is in her element, with a massive swimming pool to herself and massages on tap. We indulged in some local foot reflexology, after all the walking around old temples - Jax thought it was v painful but it sent Chris to sleep!
Siem Reap is a surprisingly nice town and very amenable to Westerners - actually, the town
has really only been developed in the last few years, particularly with tourists in mind as a base for people coming to visit the temples - the main attraction it seems, of the country.
So far, we've been venturing out of the hotel for night life, although our hotel has fantastic restaurants and a late night Irish bar with live band singing Spice Girls numbers in broken English! The pictures of the Irish greyhounds remind Jax of Douggie and the staff think we're joking when we tell them we have an Irish greyhound as a pet!
All the nightlife centres around one main road - known as "Pub Street", guess that doesn't need too much explaining. We can walk to the town centre from our hotel, although our personal tuk tuk driver seems to be easily offended if we don't travel with him! The roads here seem a little calmer and more curteous than Vietnam, although a late night tuk tuk ride is still not for the faint hearted!
Still been so lucky with the weather, beautiful blue skies, and in the low 30s every day, with a gentle breeze. It's supposed to rain occasionally at this
time of year here, but the last rain we saw was back in England. In Vietnam, a major typhoon was forecast to hit the central lands, around the same time we were arriving there.....luckily it changed direction and our good weather continued uninterrupted.
Relaxing in the hotel for a bit today (this morning was the first morning we didn't have to be up for anything and it was bliss!) Flying over to Thailand tomorrow, although thinking of spending a few days in Laos, as it has been recommended by so many fellow travellers (just bought the Lonely Planet guide and will do some reading while in Bangkok).
Miss you all, speak soon,
love Jax and Chris
