As the title of this blob indicates, our previous night out on the town in Siem Reap turned bad. The story of the night is one we considered for a long time whether to gloss over or omit completely from this blog series. However, just as traveler's tips are generally better and more truthful than some guidebooks and travel brochures, so too are traveler's warnings. So here it goes... Our night had been going well. We went out to dinner with a group of friends we had met over the last couple of days and followed this up with a return to Angkor Wat? Bar. A place we enjoyed the night before with cheap buckets of cocktails. Sometime when you travel as a guy, especially with a mate, you relax with some aspects of travel and ... read more

Through our guest house (Siem Reap Rooms - we highly recommend it) we'd organised to meet with a family in a nearby village to check out how laundry was done in Cambodia and also to demonstrate how the Scrubba wash bag works. It would be interesting to get a local's opinion. Our TukTuk driver, Perry, drove us about 50 minutes from Siem Reap to the village where his sister lives. Perry also spoke a good amount of English which helped us explain why we were there. Nevertheless, Perry's sister appeared a little baffled that a couple of tourists would be interested to see how she does her laundry. We were shown a simple washing process involving a hand water pump, a plastic washing basin and a scrubbing brush. While effective, it appeared to be a time ... read more

After hiring a couple of mountain bikes, we'd decided to save the most famous temple, Angkor Wat, for last. As such, we were off to ride the grand circuit of the temples in Angkor. The circuit is approximately 26 kms but another few extra by taking a "shortcut" down a side road. The "shortcut" was a great way of seeing some of the local villages and our voices almost became hoarse from all the "hellos" responding to the local kids. However, our shortcut managed to bypass the ticket booth for the temples and we had to ride 5 km back towards town to the ticketbooth. Having not had a good bit of exercise for awhile, the opportunity was embraced, pushing our mountain bikes to their (and our) limits, riding in the slick streams of tuc tucs, ... read more

Well, the time had come for me to take the 12 hour sleeper bus up to Siem Reap to visit the 8th wonder of the world, Angkor Wat. But not before an inevitable 1 night stop over at Sihanoukville as all the buses were full. Oh well, I could stomach 1 more blow out down that way before taking in some culture! Some friends I travelled with in Laos just happened to be in Siem Reap at the same time as me after travelling through Vietnam for a few weeks. Siem Reap's main attraction is obviously the temples and everything is geared around that, but it also has a bit of a party scene, mostly revolving around 'Pub Street' in the centre of town. After an evening of srinking we decided it would be a good ... read more

We arrived at Golden Mango and were greeted by Sonny who was a proper nice guy. We got cold towels which felt like an orgasm after the day we had and some magical juice which we were confused by but by the end of our stay realised was just the mixed fruit juice we had at breakfast! We had a double room booked but the first night we had to stay in a twin room, we didnt mind because we thought we are going to be sleeping next to each other for 3months and could do with the seperate beds for good sleep. We arrived at about 5pm by the way and slept until dinner time next day! We had arranged for a driver to pick us up at 2pm to take us to Angkor Wat ... read more

On December 9th, Aoife and I arrived in Siem Reap. The main reason for visiting this city is the nearby Angkor area located in Siem Reap province, the historic remains of a great Khmer civilisation. The Angkor era existed from 802 AD until 1431 AD when the empire fell and a dark period ensued as the population abandoned the area. “In 2007, an international team of researchers using satellite photographs and other modern techniques concluded that Angkor had been the largest preindustrial city in the world, with an elaborate system of infrastructure connecting an urban sprawl of at least 1,000 square kilometres (390 sq. mi) to the well-known temples at its core”. The temples remained hidden away in the forest until they were rediscovered by the French in the mid-19thcentury. The Angkor temples exceeded our high ... read more

We left Koh Chang on the 29th of December and made our way to Cambodia. We were meant to get picked up at 7 am but the driver must have slept in and came at 7.45 and the ferry was due to leave at 8.30 am. He chased along the windy coast road like a lunatic and I didn't feel safe at all but we arrived at the ferry on time. We only had a short stop at the tour office and then continued our way towards the border crossing in Poipet. Once we got there a very very very friendly Thai "tour guide" welcomed us in the middle of nowhere and told us we have to buy the visa for Cambodia of him for 1100 Baht (36US$) otherwise it would took us 3 hours to ... read more

Cambodia – Siem Reap – The mighty temple of Angkor Wat and an unwelcome sneaky hand during a massage!! With my last night in Bangkok completed and my goodbyes said to Maam and Gav I got ready to get the bus to Siem Reap. Everything was really easy, I already had an e-visa organised a few weeks before hand and the bus journey, although a little tight on space was pretty painless. We stopped just short of the border for food and this is when the sales pitch commenced and the attitude of some of the staff took a slight u-turn. Because I already had my visa I was not a prime target for the sales team and my lovely orange square sticker I had to wear told them this, the cost of my visa was ... read more

My last morning in Laos was my birthday & thanks to the 2 boys that I had met on stray, there were candles in my breakfast pancake, which made my day. After that we travelled to the border & crossed into Cambodia. I parted from the boys in Strung Treng & made my way to Kratie with 2 other couples. The next day we travelled further to Siem Reap but had trouble finding a connecting bus in Skun so we were stuck for 4 hours waiting for a bus that was promised to come. Siem Reap is a lively town with great food. I tried a traditional dessert last night with coconut milk & bananas plus a lot of condensed milk. For the last 2 days I have hired a tul-tuk to take me to see ... read more
