Sarah and Mike

Firefly and Lazarus

This travel blog is intended to be a place where we chronicle our November 2011 through the end of March 2012 journey through Southeast Asia and India. For those who are new to this blog, we would like to share a little about ourselves. Sarah is originally from Minnesota and graduated from Argosy University with an Associates of Applied Science degree focusing on veterinary technology and is currently employed at a 24 hour emergency veterinary hospital in Anchorage Alaska. Mike was born and raised in Anchorage and has been a proud member of the IBEW local 1547 for the past 15+ years, and has been working as a Telephone technician based out of Girdwood for the last two+ years. Mike recently received a New US Passport in 2010 after his previous one became nearly filled with Visa stamps, and Sarah was just issued her first ever US Passport in 2011. So during the blogs from this trip we will undoubtedly be mixing perspectives / observations from our own personal history with how we each individually and as a couple filter our day to day experience on this new travel adventure.

should be fun :)

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel's sake. The great affair is to move; to feel the needs and hitches of our life more nearly; to come down off this feather-bed of civilization, and find the globe granite underfoot and strewn with cutting flints.
Robert Louis Stevenson

To travel is to discover that everyone is wrong about other countries.

After about 16 days of living in a tent and hours of taxi rides, we were very happy to have arrived in Agra and found that the 'cheap' hotel we booked online ended up being a 5 star hotel. It was very nice to be able to get some R&R in our room and actually have a nice WARM shower! While in Agra, we visited the Taj Mahal. Enjoy the pictures!... read more

Prior to leaving on this trip from Alaska, we had made a decision to attend the 32nd annual Kalachakra initiation presented by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. While we had no real idea what we were getting our selves into, we knew it would be a great opportunity/adventure. The Kalachakra initiation was to be presented in a town that could house maybe several thousand tourists at a time, and yet would be attended by appx two hundred thousand. Due to the lack of accommodations, many tent camps were being set up for the attendees. We opted to stay in a tent on the university grounds hosted by the Kalachakra organizing committee and blindly booked our tent many months in advance. So eventually the day arrived when we needed to catch a train from Varanasi to Gaya. ... read more

After our adventure in Patna, our train finally reached Varanasi at about 4am. It was very dark and we had not made prior arrangements for a place to stay. We ended up taking an auto-rickshaw down to the ghats to try and find a room to rent. Through the maze of the small alleys you have to walk through to find the ghats, we finally found two of the guest houses that were in our Lonely Planet guide. Since it was so early in the morning, everything was locked down and gated shut and we had no way to get a hold of anybody to enquire about a room. We ended up just sitting on one of the ghats in the cold dark morning until the sun started to rise. It was quite a difference to ... read more

We finally made it to the Birgunj/Raxoul (Nepal/Indian) border crossing after about 10 long hours of riding in our taxi. Our driver had no idea what the protocol was when it came to exiting/entering countries. He drove us straight through the border and past both visa stations. Once we finally got him to understand what we needed to do,(ie. actually present our selves to the officials who handle Passport, Customs, Immigration control, both on the exiting of Nepal and the entering of India). It is never advisable to run a border between two countries the way our driver casually did. We had to turn around and attempt to cross the border back into Nepal unnoticed. This had us a little concerned, but we made it through with no problems. Once we got our passports properly stamped ... read more

We enjoyed our visit to Kathmandu, Nepal. We stayed at the Blue Horizon hotel that was tucked away at the end of a closed street. We had read previously that the number of stray dogs around town had kept other guests awake at night. We did not have this problem. We were very comfortable and felt very safe at our hotel. We spent most of our time walking around town exploring and made a visit to Monkey Temple. While walking through the temple, a large monkey jumped on Mike and tried to steal his orange soda. It was a small game of tug-of-war. Mike won, of course. It was funny. Two were stalking Mike for his soda down some stairs and Sarah had to kick around him to keep them away. It was hilarious. Around Dec ... read more
