Got your attention - no it is PJ not Angelina. Anyway we were up early again this morning and off to see some more temples in Siem Reap. We went to Angkor Thom which has a number of temples within its city walls. One of which is called Ta Prohn which was the temple used by Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider - it has now been renamed as Angelina Jolie's temple - think this says it all. However, we did join the throngs of Koreans trying to jostle for a picture so bit of pot, kettle black or what! In fact, there are huge numbers of tourists at all the temples - and this isn't even high season. Can't imagine the free for all will be allowed for ever - damage is being done by ... read more

Well arrived at Siem Reap airport after quite a bumpy flight and remember a really early start - so not in best mood. Well we had to get a visa on arrival and to be honest not looking forward to it. However, all I can say is I was totally wrong it was really smooth and efficient not at all what all the books said it would be like. We go outside the airport arrivals hall which is so sweet - and there is a board with our name on it. To say we just booked the tour over the internet a couple of days ago and all correspondence had been through email with no deposit left - I was pleasantly surprised. We had to get some American Dollars to pay for the tour so the ... read more

Just got in to Cambodia yesterday and so far it's my favorite place to be. The first thing I noticed flying in is how flat this region is. Everywhere else we've been so far has been so moutainesque. Arriving at the airport I had no idea we would need a visa or cash, or that the ATM would swallow my card, so that was a fiasco. In the end a very nice Korean woman helped me out with what to do and how to get through immigration. Once out of the airport, it was evident that things here are much more laid back and life moves more slowly than the other places we've been. Unlike Phuket or Kuala Lumpur, where everyone is always in a hurry to go anywhere, our taxi ride here was slow and ... read more

Long day. Woke up and headed to check out more temples in Angkor and Ta Phrom Temple, the temple where they filmed Tomb Raider with the tree. The temples were awesome but it was so so hot! I just wanted to get back to an air conditioned hotel room. When I arrived back around noon, I decided it was time for a massage. I got a full body, hot oil and stone massage for $8 for 1 hour! Yay! And it was awesome! I just wish I had more time here to take advantage of it. Afterwards, headed out to FCC restaurant, as recommended by Ian and Fredrik :) It was lovely and the best part was the fruit shake made of the freshest fruit of the season. It was the yummiest thing ever! My driver ... read more

I'm home after just a short time out with friends. I went out with Olivia and Sam (the Canadian girls) and had a lovely dinner of pizza and beer while being entertained by Cambodian traditional dancers. I was feeling weird earlier in the day with a bad tummy, so I took some antibiotics that my doctor prescribed me. Dinner didnt affect me and I thought I was fine. After about 20 minutes, I could start feeling my tummy didnt like any food and I started to feel naseous! Uh oh...I think it was time for me to head home :( I had to cut my time at the night market short, but at least I can try to catch up on some sleep. I pray that I'll be ready and well for tomorrow when I check ... read more

I landed in Siem Reap yesterday. Of course, the weather is still unbearably hot and humid. I met a lovely couple, Jon and Ellen on the plane. Not sure why I seem to meet couples, but it just so happens that I do. We spoke of travelling and life and made plans to meet up for dinner when we got into Siem Reap. As for my hotel, it is quite large, decently nice, and clean. It definitely isn't as nice as my other place in Phnom Penh, but it will do. I took a quick nap when I arrived in my hotel and decided it was time to head straight to the pool. It was lovely and the water was perfect! After about an hour, I took a shower and got myself ready to do some ... read more

So, after managing to get across the Cambodian border with only a bit of tout hassle, we made our way to Siem Reap. We shared a taxi with two Greek guys which was interesting and amusing. On arrival we booked ourself in to a nice hostel and headed out to check out the area. We met a group of people (2 Canadian, 1 Irish and 1 Aussie) who we met up with several times over the next few days. We went to see Angkor Wat and all the other temples in the National Park, visited the night Market and had a fish foot session at one of the massage places. We also went to a sleazy UV bar on pub street that promotes 'irresponsible drinking' and watched a band that played Muse/ System of a Down/ ... read more

After the worst journey due to all the waiting round in queues to get over the border we learnt that we are patient people. Due to the long journey we met a few friends along the way and all ended up staying at the same hotel. When we crossed the border we became millionaires, 200 pounds =10,000 (Thai) Bht = 1,000,000R = $300!! Its hard working in 4 currenicies, the empty space in our pockets where our mobiles once where is now filled with calculators. Our first trip in Siem Reap was to a floating village on Tonle Sap Lake, over 1000 families live on the lake either on boats or raft houses. It was crazy, our boat steering wheel broke and the driver some how steered us to a floating garage where he got a ... read more

It's been a while since my last blog. We left Bangkok on 17 March to travel to Cambodia by bus. I heard before that if you get to the border the border people will try and make you pay in Thai Baht for the Cambodian visa. The visa should be $20. If you pay in Baht it will be considerably more. The same happened to us and I argued with the guy saying that my friends crossed the border two days ago and paid in USD (made up but he lied too!). He refused and we walked out to another office. They accepted the USD but asked us to pay an additional 300 Baht. The whole thing worked out at about $25 which isn't too bad. Advice to anyone who crosses the border at Aranya Prathet, ... read more

So after attempting to save the best for last it was now time to check out the temple of all South East Asian Temples; Angkor Wat. At almost 1 square kilometre, it sure is spectacular in it's grandeur and you can see why it's such a proud emblem of Cambodia. However, it's also a tourist stampede. The challenge becomes trying to take that picture of a lonely ancient temple between one drove of people and the next. Adam's pick of the bunch was Ta Prohm, which he dubbed as perhaps even more spectacular than Angkor Wat. Unlike Angkor Wat, there's been an intentional effort to leave it in a semi state of neglect. Cotton trees stand high on tops of the temple, the giant roots entangled in the walls threatening to suffocate the temple itself. It ... read more
