Operation Rosa Parks: From the land of a thousand ao dai, to the land of a thousand Buddhas. The last we heard of our hero, he was poised for another excruciatingly long trip up country. He had just spent a depressing day witnessing the crimes and horror imposed by a regime who brutally slaughtered 30% of the country's population in order to erase any existance of capitalism and bring communism to Cambodia under Pol Pot. Now he was ready to move on and see the wonders of ancient civilizations. However, there was a bit more uncertainty surrounding this next adventure as not only the mode of transportation would be in question, but also the conditions of the roads that would lead him there. In retrospect, this new adventure into the unknown would be luxurious compared to ... read more

WE Made it out!!!Barely, I mean Vietnam was a tourist trap from start to finish, I know they have suffered hardshipsin the past, but I firmly believe they are trying to make up for lost time in a year a day an hour, for they go after each and every penny ruthlessly. Not only us, they will even rip off their own people... Example. Picture this, 38 degrees, I have a backpack and a new bag that we bought to haul some extra clothes and things, weighing roughly 60 pounds, we are walking 1 KM to this boat...on the way this little girl asks me to buy water fromher, well actually she asked for about 15 minutes straight until I broke down, but anyways, these other little guys were trying to help me find the boat ... read more

I got back into Thailand, and met up with Nat. We immediately ventured forth to the Cambodia border. The magic casino bus Getting to Siam Reap turned out to be quite the adventure. First off, Nat wanted to take the "Casino Bus". Gambling is quite illegal in Thailand. Fortunately for the hard core, Cambodia (the SE Asian equivalent of the Wild West) is only a few short hours away. The big casinos run a shuttle bus from several locations in Bangkok to the border for practiaclly nothing. The only trick is that these buses are pseudo illegal. I think. In any case, it took us a long time to find the stop. We finally did, and managed to get to the border without incident. I think we were supposed to pretend like we were hard core ... read more

Hi all, Hope everyone’s doing great. We’ve abandoned the sultry slow pace of the beaches in Southern Thailand and are on the road seeing, hearing and tasting some wonderful places. Since our last update we’ve been entertaining our friends James and Tim. They arrived separately but as fate would have we all came together at Angkor in Cambodia. As you’ll see from the pictures a good time was had by all. After leaving Bangkok we flew into Siem Reap. A town about 10 minutes drive to the ancient Angkor temples. We had arranged to have someone from our hotel pick us up at the airport but "Mr. Tim", as he became infamously known all over town, had given the wrong ETA and we found our own way into town. The owners of the guesthouse were very ... read more

We arrived in Cambodia crossing through the Thai border. This bus journey was a long one from Chian Mai, via Bangkok. The journey from the border to the Cambodian town of Siam Reap was a real bone-shaker! We were told we would be a nice coach with Air-con when infact we were on a stinky little mini-bus crammed full of people and bags and there were pot-holes everywhere. Luckily the guest house (moon-rise) was somwhere nice to recover. The next day we had a much awaited lie-in and then headed off to see the temples of Angkor in the afternoon. We purchased a 3-day ticket which was well worth the $40 each as there is so much to explore. If you were really keen and wanted to see all the temples it would take a week ... read more

City of Temples Siem Reap, home to Angkor Wat is unbelievable – words cannot describe the magnitude and beauty of the temples. We spent three days touring the temples, including our favourite, Bayon, an incredible Wat made of 116 massive faces. Here are a few pics. ... read more

Hello again! We left Saigon with a bunch of other backpackers and took a trip around the Mekong Delta, where we saw how people really live in Viet Nam (in very smelly places with lots of rubbish). Everybody was so friendly though and we had a brilliant time cruising down beautiful little canals wearing those Vietnamese straw hats and picking bananas off the trees. Visited a noodle factory which was also a pig sty and cock-fighting venue, a crocodile farm (yes, farm not sanctuary) and nearly ate the local delicacy of raw pork (which I thought was a pink sweet). One of the locals stopped me just in time. We think we managed to avoid eating dog, and discovered snake tastes just like chicken, with the added bonus of not having flu. Great atmosphere everywhere we ... read more

Getting to Siem Reap in Cambodia meant enduring the bus ride from hell. The country's war torn past has left the roads in an unbelievable state of disrepair and the shortage of government funds mean modernisation (or just normal upkeep) is slow to non existant in any area not immediately surrounding the city centres. The trip although terribly bumpy, dusty, hot and allround uncomfortable was solely responsible for getting a bus load of strangers to rally together and laugh our was in disbelief all the way to Siem Reap. It was some of these people that became our travel companions for the rest of our trip in the country. If it wasn't on the doorstep on the Temples of Angkor, Siem Reap would just be another dot on the map. Everyone who comes to Cambodia goes ... read more
