Cindy and myself are planning a trip around the world beginning on Jan 19th. I say around the world but in fact we are visiting South East Asia and then onto Sydney and New York. The one extraordinary thing that we will be doing is working at an Orang Utan conservation site in Sumatra where we hope to see these amazing creatures in their natural habitat. Enjoy our Site X

G'day to all, sorry that there are no photo's et. Can you believe that there are no decent Internet Cafes in Times square! So that's were we are sat now waiting to go and see a stand up comedy show at the Improv Comedy club. It's an interactive Improv comedy club whatever that means and the tickets were $5 provided that we buy a couple of drinks. Sydney was really cool. Cindy took me to Darling Harbour, Circular quay, manly beach, Bondi beach and coogee where we poped in to see Paul and Mira. Had a really good night. Paul is famous for getting people pissed and he certainly lived up to his reputation on us even though we had a 20hr flight to NY the next day. There was an incident with a flip-flop which ... read more
After chilling out in Kuta (Bali) we decided we would go and explore another part of Bali! We headed to Lembongan - a small island off of Bali (thanks to Anthony for recommending this place and World Diving too!). After a choppy boat ride to get there james surfed at "playgrounds" which is one of the world famous surf places. Sounds small time with a name like that but on the day James practiced his moves the waves were big and I could not see him from the beach only others crashing into the huge swell. H e got hit on his head by the fin of his board but luckliy he survived just about and came back to shore throughly exhausted and waiting for his head to suddenly split open! We decided maybe the surfing ... read more
Hello everyone! This is just a quick update to let you know we are both fine. We have had several emails to check we are okay after the earthquake that hit sumatra. We moved onto Bali on the 25th March so we did not feel anything or even hear about it until we saw it on CNN about 2 hours ago. Those poor people, this will have hit them hard at a time when they are trying to get back on their feet. But knowing the indonesians they will keep smiling and put a brave face on. No photos on this blog but we will add some soon. We have been chilling out, catching some rays but normally after about 2 hrs we are either too hot or lobster like and slink off to the shade ... read more
Before I go on just a quick note to say Hi to Rob and Jaks and happy Birthday Rob you old git :-) Your present is in the post but you know what the South-east asian postal surface is like. Take care 6/03/04 - Now DEAR ALL We spent a night in Medan before meeting our course leader, Anthony, and two other volunteers Saskia and Franz poo poo pants from Holland before heading off to Bukit Lawang. The first 3 days were spent acclimatizing to both the weather, and the toiletry customs (yes Baby wipes were used!) We also carried out some field assistant tasks, which included filling test tubes with preservative (used to keep Orang poo) and data entry. Cindy and I amused ourselves by talking in silly voices the whole time we were entering ... read more
Well we have escaped the jungle for a few days and we are in Lake Toba in Sumatra - the largest lake in South East Asia. We have managed to get internet access so are busy checking emails and we thought we would update you all too. We arrived in Vietnam from Cambodia on the 31st March and had approximately a week to explore this beautiful country. We definitley want to come back as the country is huge and we really did not get enough time to see everything. We started in the capitol of Hanoi - this was a lovely place with a real french feel about it. Lots of small shops everywhere selling all kinds of things. Beautiful lamps, pitures, bags, clothes, food, CD's. It was great just wandering the streets and watching all ... read more
Hello everyone, So we have not entered a blog for a while and we are currently sat at Changi airport (having just had swim in the rooftop pool) waiting to fly to Medan in Sumatra as we start the Orangutan volunteer programme tomorrow. So in a way part of our trip has come to an end and we start another adventure which is going to be hard work (and yes we are getting worried!) and we will not be able to contact the email or use the phone as far as we can tell. So we thought we would write quickly and say Hello. No pictures on this blog at the moment as we cannot download on these machines...but we will add planty when we finish the volunteer programme. So we moved from Siam Reap to ... read more
After the Perhentian islands we headed up to Khota Bharu and crossed the border into Thailand. From where we got a 4 hour minibus ride to Hat Yai and an overnight bus to Bangkok. We stayed in 'Ýour home' guest house in Soy Kasem San and this is where we had our first hot shower for ages. It was bliss and when the Chicken cashew was washed down by a Singh beer later I thought I'd died and gone to heaven. We ate with Kate and Shaun from Basingstoke that evening whome we had arranged to meet. They had just arrived back from 4 weeks in Phukett and were looking very tanned and relaxed. Seems like they had a wonderful time there. Afterwards we went and got a Massage from nearby their posh hotel. We all ... read more
We arrived in Cambodia crossing through the Thai border. This bus journey was a long one from Chian Mai, via Bangkok. The journey from the border to the Cambodian town of Siam Reap was a real bone-shaker! We were told we would be a nice coach with Air-con when infact we were on a stinky little mini-bus crammed full of people and bags and there were pot-holes everywhere. Luckily the guest house (moon-rise) was somwhere nice to recover. The next day we had a much awaited lie-in and then headed off to see the temples of Angkor in the afternoon. We purchased a 3-day ticket which was well worth the $40 each as there is so much to explore. If you were really keen and wanted to see all the temples it would take a week ... read more
So after the pleasures of the jungle we were planning to head straight for Thailand but we were kidnapped by Brittany and Jordan our new canadian pals who persuaded (okay not kidnapped!) us to hit the beach of the Perhentian Islands on the east coast of Malaysia to recover. These islands normally do not open for the tourists until March due to the monsoon but this year the monsoon had finished early meaning the islands were quiet and possibly a bit of a bargain as they would be pleased for our business. Well so we thought but the beach chalets we stayed in were not particularly value for money despite having a view of the turquoise water and white sands..the water never became hot despite being told it would and the electricity that normally worked all ... read more
Dear all, We arrived in Malaysia and went straight to KL for a couple of days. Had fun shopping under the Petronis twin towers although we didn't go up it or buy anything! Explored China town and the busy markets. Cindy was suprised at the people saying 'Come and look at these watches miss'. Again we didn't buy anything apart from food of course. James had his much sought after Chicken Cashew nut and Cindy had Veggie noodles... This was of course suplemented by the legendary Tiger Beer! As it was Cindy's first time in KL she thought it had very modern buildings but quite dirty and polluted, but we had fun all the same. We then hopped on a bus off to Kuala Selangor. This sleepy little town has the most amazing Firefly tours. We ... read more
