Hello everyone! I haven't written in a couple weeks as a result of busy travel through Laos involving gibbons, remote villages, french colonial Luang Prabang, and several lazy days floating in the Mekong and sleeping in a hammock. After a long travel day, I am in Cambodia now en route to Phnom Penh. Over the next couple days I will log on and write about my Laos adventures and upcoming plans. For now: I love you, I am safe, think of you often, and look forward to sharing with you. hugs, Vanessa... read more

Whoever designed my wonderful lightweight shorts with the multitude of zippered pockets must not have considered that those pockets, zippers and all, are exactly at eye level of curious 5-year-old children who are quick to determine that you probably have paper money wadded into afore-mentioned pockets. I made a number of young friends today, and we had a grand time together, but they never gave up on their gentle pursuit of my money! The ship pulled up to the riverbank this morning and a long gangplank was laid to the shore. Because this is the end of the dry season and the water level is very low, the bank was quite steep and required a 30-40 foot climb to the top. As soon as the crew could get on shore, they set to work with ... read more

On www.travelfish.org I'd read about a homestay experience that sounded interesting. A couple, Don and Kheang offered an experience to see what rural life is like in Cambodia and the reviews of the experience had been great, so when I arrived in Phnom Penh I rang Don and organised a visit. Don is an American that's settled down in Cambodia, with his Cambodian wife and two children Ra and Na. They are a really interesting couple that have both had fascinating lives and it was just so interesting hearing their stories!! Kheang had actually been alive while PolPot was in charge, so had seen a lot of hardship and a lot of change in Cambodia. When I arrived, so I could see a bit of typical Cambodian scenery and also get a bit of an insight ... read more
A close up shot of the spiders - gross eh. Even worse though, was that there was a bucket next to it full of ones that were alive!! Very scary!!

After leaving the packed area of Angkor & Siem Reap, we made the 6 hour drive to Kampong Cham along the Mekong River. This stop was basically a mid-way point towards the coast so there wouldn't be any too exciting here. We made the trip using public transport which was interesting. Because many of the cars don't have side/rear view mirrors, drivers honk when passing. We had the front seats and were subjected to 6 hours of honking every 30 seconds and Cambodian karaoke tapes on the TV. We only had the afternoon to explore and I made the trip to a small island in the middle of the Mekong River where 7,000 people live. We were visiting a pagoda where some monks live and teach young children English. We'd assist in the days lesson for ... read more

As I write this entry we have conducted 15 workshops and have 3 to go, not including the 8 week training program which will run up until the day before I leave to go home. So we are well over half-way now! Many of the one-day workshops we have conducted at our Chab Dai premises (where our work office is) in a fantastic training room that has cushions and straw mats on the floor. It has been a great learning opportunity for us to be doing training while sitting on the floor. Much more relaxing! (Unfortunately for the participants too - many have been tempted to doze off particularly after lunch!). During these workshops we bring a caterer in who provides lunch and refreshments Khmer style - very yummy food. For the other workshops, we travel ... read more

Nasz czas w prowincji Mondulkiri sie skonczyl. Nastepnym punktemaszej wyprawy na polnoc Kambodzy miala byc prowincja Ratanakiri. Miala, bo jednak tak szybko nie bedzie. Bezposrednia droga z Sen Monorom do Ban Lung ( stolica prow. W dodatku ... read more

Autobusy z Phnom Penbh do Ratanakiri zatrzymuja sie w Kratie okolo poludnia.

Public bus from Siem Reap to Kampong Cham Another early start, this time to experience our first public bus. Our half-day journey would take us from Siem Reap (Blog: ) to Kampong Cham. The roads were good, as was the bus - none of these packed, dust covered buses we'd feared. No, these buses had aircon, so there was no need to open the windows and let the dust in to cake us from head to toe. It was such a relaxing journey, I actually managed to sleep most of it. Arriving at our destination, the bus was beseiged by tuk tuk drivers and beggars which we feared we'd have to fight through to get off the bus. Fortunately Yong, our group leader, had already agreed with the driver he'd drop us off at the door ... read more

Another travel day. From Battambang we caught a bus which took us back to Phnom Penh in 6 hrs. We got Cambodian music videos which we thought were bad until the Cambodian standup comedy came on. That was followed by a bad Chinese vampire movie! We were only in Phnom Penh long enough to find transport to Kampong Cham. Of course we were met by a barrage of tuktuk drivers and so we enlisted one to take us from the bus station to where the taxis for Kampong Cham were waiting. With the five of us and our bags that makes for on full tuktuk. The tuktuk driver was great and in no time had found us a van for Kampong Cham for $20. Two hours later we had a room, cold beer and were ordering ... read more
