We are finally back in the UK now. We got back to our house at 9.30pm after being up for nearly 24 hours, but it was all worth it. What an amazingly holiday its been with our wedding and honeymoon and getting to share it with so many friends/family. Thanks to everyone that came out, you helped make everything really special for us. Well back to our last week of the trip, our honeymoon. We had chosen Thong Nai Pan in Koh Phangan for our main honeymoon destination as we had heard it has soft white sand, beautiful mountains in the background and lovely clear water and it didn't let us down on any counts. Seb and Amy were coming with us for the first few days, which was really nice, so we all got a ... read more

I was so sad to say goodbye to Koh Phangan as I had such an amazing time, but I was coming back to the island for me and Nat's honeymoon, so it wasn't goodbye for long. Plus now I had something amazing coming up - the wedding!!! I could barely contain my excitement, the day was finally nearly here!!! After saying our goodbyes to Karla (the person that helped run Lighthouse Bungalows) we were on our way to Koh Samui. When we arrived Beckie, Kate and Sam headed off towards Cheweng as they were staying at Jungle Club, high in the jungle above Cheweng and me, Nat and Lisa went in the opposite direction towards Maenam, which was supposed to be a lot more chilled out than Cheweng (no late night venues, no McDonalds etc) and ... read more

Sorry this blog is so late, its been a crazy few days!! Me and Nat ended up having the most amazing time in Koh Phangan, despite my foot being poorly. I was told by the clinic not to get my foot wet, dirty or to walk on it too much. Unfortunately I'm not very good at following advice and chilling out, I just can't sit still for very long, so I'm afraid I ended up doing all 3 things I wasn't supposed to (sorry mum!!). I'd already gotten it wet at Songkran and dirty walking along the beach, so I figured I may as well not miss out on any of the parties - my foot would have plenty of time to heal in Koh Samui and when I come back to Koh Phangan after the ... read more

It was Songkran on 13th April, so I'm a bit late writing this blog, but its been a busy few days what with Lisa, Beckie, Kate and Sam arriving. Great to see everyone! Back to Songkran though. What an amazing day!!! I wasn't sure whether to go to Thong Sala, the capital of Koh Phangan to celebrate Songkran as my foot was supposed to be kept dry and I wanted to heal as quickly as possible. However it soon became clear than even just going to a restaurant for lunch was going to result in me getting drenched, even if I stayed in Haad Rin, which isn't even the main place they celebrate it here. So I made a makeshift cover for my foot out of a plastic bag and me and Nat headed to Thong ... read more

Me and Nat woke up early as our bus to the airport was at 8am, so the day didn't have the best start. Its no fun waking up at 6.45am when you're on holiday, but we had to eat, pack and get to the bus stop, so we thought it best to get up as early as possible. We made it to the airport in plenty of time and it was actually a very painfree process. by the time we got to the gate it was almost time to fly. The plane turned out to be a tiny little turbo prop plane (as opposed to a jet powered plane), with only 2 rows of 2 inside. How exciting!! The flight was a good flight and we reached Samui a bit early and since I had a ... read more

Well I finally made it back to Thailand and I was shocked by the heat and the smell that hits you the minute you step off the plane. Its like a hot, but sweaty oven. But as I looked around at all the colour and chaos of Bangkok I felt like I'd come home. Just walking through arrivals gate i noticed lots of Thai girls (or were they Thai boys?) dressed up for a festival. In 3 days time it is due to be Songkran, one of Thailands biggest celebrated festivals. It is Thai New Year from 13th-15th April quite a lot of the country celebrates this by having a massive waterfight. It started off traditionally as a much more subdued water ceremony with only a few drops splashed, but has degenerated into massive water fight ... read more

Sihanoukville is Cambodia's main beach resort. There are about 5 different beaches in the area, but most people stay around Serendipity Beach as this is where the best nightlife is. I arrived quite late in the day (around 6pm on the last bus from Phnom Penh) and struggled to find somewhere to stay, so I ended up in a place costing $9 a night. Shocking eh!! I was down to my last $100, so I knew I wouldn't be able to stay there and still eat, but I figured I could find somewhere else the next day. After travelling all the way from Kampong Cham to Phnom Penh, then Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville I was feeling a bit exhausted, so that night I just stayed in watching Sky TV and got an early night. The next ... read more

On www.travelfish.org I'd read about a homestay experience that sounded interesting. A couple, Don and Kheang offered an experience to see what rural life is like in Cambodia and the reviews of the experience had been great, so when I arrived in Phnom Penh I rang Don and organised a visit. Don is an American that's settled down in Cambodia, with his Cambodian wife and two children Ra and Na. They are a really interesting couple that have both had fascinating lives and it was just so interesting hearing their stories!! Kheang had actually been alive while PolPot was in charge, so had seen a lot of hardship and a lot of change in Cambodia. When I arrived, so I could see a bit of typical Cambodian scenery and also get a bit of an insight ... read more

Phnom Penh - poverty and palaces

Phnom Penh sometimes feels like one of the poorest areas in South East Asia. Its not often you come across so many people begging, so many people without limbs and so many run down areas. Most of the streets are dirty, there is traffic everywhere - half of it going the wrong way up the street. It seems like complete chaos, just how you imagined a third world capital city to look. However there are two sides to Phnom Penh. Along the riverfront there are fancy restaurants, there are lots of posh hotels and you see a lot of tourists who are obviously not slumming it like me in a budget hotel (which had a rat in!!), counting their pennies to see if they can afford a pizza as a treat. So I decided to explore ... read more

My adventure to the Mekong Delta began in Saigon on New Years Eve. All the budget tour companies offer trips to the Mekong Delta, finishing in Phnom Penh - some of them for as cheap as $26 for a 3 day trip. However I decided I wanted to see as much scenery as possible, so I booked my tour with Delta Adventures, as they leave Saigon by boat instead of by bus, also the journey to Cambodia is mostly by boat instead of by bus, so I would see a lot more scenery than with the super cheap tour companies. The first day we set off on the Saigon river on a small wooden boat and headed off towards My Tho, our first destination. I was surprised to see how poor all the people living along ... read more
