My apologies for the break in posting! (And Will, there is internet in the hotel, and even a cable in my room, but my stupid Mac won't assign an IP address so I can't log on in my room -- if anyone has advice on this I'd love to hear it!) Thursday we had a full day at the center. It's been pointed out to me that not everyone who's reading this knows why I'm here! I'm hesitant to give too many details on a public website, but the short of it is, there is this very nasty virus that is carried by the flying fox (those really really really big fruit bats) populations, and over the past 5 or so years it has caused several outbreaks in the human population. This virus doesn't make the ... read more

If a rule is implemented in a 3rd world country and yet nobody knows about it, does the rule even exist??? I know you're waiting to hear all about Everest, but this is story is just too ribonkulous and needs to be written while she's still fresh. In order to save a couple hundy, I opted to have a 1 night layover in Dhaka, Bangladesh on the way to Nepal and upon my return to Bangkok. Don't feel bad if you dont know where Dhaka is either, I thought it was in India and was made to look like a fool when I went to the Indian Embassy and confidently told the employee that I was going to Dhaka...to which he laughed in my face and essentially said "are you retarded? Dhaka isn't in India"....I ... read more

In the 40 minute night flight from Dubai to Oman they served us dinner with Gulf Air, I mean with Ryanair in Europe you don't even get water. In the later flight to Dhaka, Bangladesh, we arrived early morning. The plane was full of Bangladeshi laborers from the Gulf countries returning home for vacation. I think Roz was the only female in the airplane, and blond with blue eyes she made quite an impact with the locals. Every time she went up to the bathroom at the front of the plane you could see how every single row had the aisle passengers with their head tilted. And when she came back most must have had seriously injured their neck. There was our first taste of rock star fame. Even funnier got when the plane took ... read more

Hello again from the Desh! After a (thankfully) uneventful 24 hour trip, I arrived in Dhaka yesterday morning and slipped right back into Bangladesh mode (facilitated by having to argue with the taxi racket about the fare from the airport). I'm now getting re-aquainted with the sights, smells, sounds and humidity of Dhaka and trying to remember my Bangla. Having learned my lesson the first time, I've left my cupboard door open to the breeze to hopefully prevent mold from growing on all my clothes! My new digs at Arif's place are a significant upgrade from the old AKFC pad. Marble floors, a big queen sized bed, tv and hot running water! And Peter, the cook, is as wonderful as rumours suggested. Arif has photos of his three year old daughter (who lives in Washington) all ... read more

Well I have made it to Bangladesh safe and sound! After some initial confusion in Bangkok over the fact that I am not a MR as my transfer states (I have nothing to hide!) I arrived to Dhaka on Wednesday, which also happened to be a Hatel (Nation wide strike in response to some deaths in a mine). Bedeshi (or foreigners, my first Bengali word, are you proud?) are not supposed to travel on a Hatel because of the chance of violence (burning buses is apparently a good past time), but Cam and Nic braved it and met me at the airport under tight security (it would appear every one has guns) and we jumped in a blue taxi (don't take the black ones) and headed to their apartment in Dhaka. My first meal in Bangladesh, ... read more

Dhaka has to be one of the craziest places ive ever been too. It has to be one of the only places where you can go to, where you will not see another single white person in sight. The people are really friendly and everyone looks bemused at seeing a white girl with blonde hair. I enquired at the hotel about hiring a guide to take me around the city. The guy working behind the desk was only too happy to finish work and take me around himself!! We went on a rickshaw to the local palace. As soon as I got out, within a couple of seconds I had, and I kid you not, sixty or so guys circled around me….just looking in bewilderment! Its so funny as you would think that when you make ... read more
