Hi Everyone It’s been a couple of weeks since our last update and we have been on some serious adventures since then so make sure you read. It’s worth it! OK so Bangladesh. WOW. What an interesting country it has been. Its hard to understand why so few tourists come here being so close to South East Asia and India etc. Bangladesh is seriously off the beaten track and during our stay here we only saw 6 foreigners in the whole country. This made all our experiences that little bit sweeter. First some random facts: 1. 32 people die in Bangladesh per day due to road traffic accidents. That’s 12 000 per year! The guide book suggests that during your stay in Bangladesh you will very likely be involved in an accident in one way or ... read more
Jake and I took a leisurely stroll through our neighborhood a few weekends ago. The humidity wasn't too high and so we decided to walk around for a bit and enjoy Baridhara. The highlights, among other things, were various colourful rickshaws, exotic trees and flowers, strange fruits, the garbage "truck", and a random patch of corn (yes, corn). We took some photos to share with you :) Enjoy!... read more
The beginning of my trip to Bangladesh went smoothly. I first flew from Boston to London, where I sat next to a medical supplies salesman who elaborated about his adventures getting sick in India and dodging the aggressive traffic. Even so, his stories only increased my excitement and I read through the entire Lonely Planet book (a convenient 150 pages). The second leg of my journey caused some anxiety. Once the plane landed, I had 75 minutes to make my connecting flight to Delhi; however, by the time I used the bathroom, walked across the terminal and re-entered security, I had only 52 minutes left. When the clerk swiped my passport, she regretfully told me I was too late and that due to my failure to show up one hour before my flight, the portal ... read more
It’s been more than two weeks since the Bengali New Year on April 14th, making it not nearly as new or exciting as it would have been if I had managed to post something about it in a more timely manner. In the spirit of celebration, however, let’s just pretend. Put on something red and white (and throw in some yellow, if you’re more courageous), and imagine that you’re ringing in the new year with outdoor cultural programs, family visits, and lots of eating—all on a festival appropriate 100 degree day. We started our morning in an upper-middle class manner with our boss from Save the Children, Shahana Apa (because of her age and professional seniority to us she is always addressed publicly with “Apa,” which means older sister). After Shahana helped me re-tie my sari ... read more
Blogger: jen We liked Sonargaon so much the first time we went that we decided to go again. It’s a nice change to get out of the hustle and bustle and over crowdedness of Dhaka for a little while. We felt like we needed to be somewhere, even just for a few hours, that had a feeling of space, nature, and serenity. So Sonargaon seemed like the place to go. This time we went in the dry season. We couldn’t believe how different the city looked and felt. The water levels of the ponds and streams were down (or some had even disappeared altogether), the trees seemed less green and buildings appeared a bit dustier and more worn down that just a few months before. The town had a kind of yellowed and sleepy feel to ... read more

So turns out when you start a blog, you actually have to write in it!!! We have definitely gotten a bit lazy since creating our blog and after coming back from a nice long visit for Christmas break with family & friends we are now making a concentrated effort to regularly upate/write in it. So, stay tuned for a few upcoming entries which will be our best (and belated) attempts to "fill you in" on what's been going on here with us!... read more

You heard me correctly - there were roaches on the plane from Kathmandu to Dhaka. It was a horrible airplane experience with a horrible Airline. Biman Airlines, I hope to never fly with you again. To start things off we sat on the tarmak for about a half hour apparently waiting for some VIP's to arrive. Once they boarded it seemed we would be on are way, the engines were going, we got the safety announcement, the VIP's even got some drinks. Minutes later the engines stopped and there was an announcement that they were having some minor technical problems. At one point they even got out what looked to be an owners manual for the plane. Let me say, we were a little uneasy. It was right about then that we saw the first of ... read more
